Whats really funny is the fucking ABSURD AMOUNT OF PEOPLE IN THE MILITARY FROM TEXAS.

I remember seeing this article and being like...are you fucking kidding me? Half the exercisees are probably from the next city over from the training grounds.

44% of Texans poll thought it was at least somewhat likely that Obama was planning to impose martial law. The crazy in Texas has no rival.

Except for the crazy in the rest of middle America. Oklahoma makes Texas seem like Virginia.

HEY DON'T YOU TALK SHIT ABOUT OKL..... yeah... fuck it's pretty bad.

    Send help. Please.

    Still... fuck texas

Texas is not even close to the craziest state, the most proud maybe. Florida, Arkansas, Louisiana, West Virginia are all states that are crazier in my opinion. Texas has a lot of crazies, don't get me wrong, but it's also super diverse nowadays and the majority of it isn't that crazy anymore

Really? There's Florida and Ohio just right of the bat. Smaller but super crazy is West Virginia and then you can start on Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Those are just the main contenders, there's plenty of crazy to go around.

That's a whole different kind of crazy. I don't need a state cult after me.

Whoa, watch out buddy, you're restricting my freedom of religion to take over bird sanctuaries and hire FBI agents to build bombs blow up BLM buildings.

Yes he's about to take the whole town down, not a single military personnel thought it was a bad idea, we even invited MSNBC.

I grew up near Fort Hood, and while I wasn't there when this all took place, I knew a lot of people that bought into it that still lived there. And some of them were in the fucking military, stationed at Fort Hood!

There's a lot of stupid fucking people out there.

The hilarious thing, at least from my perspective, is this perception that the US is going to "take over" Texas.

As in, we're going to forcibly make it part of...the United States.

      What?

The other strange thing is that the same people would be the most opposed to cutting the military budget. I would've thought if you're really worried the federal military is going to take over the most effective way to reduce the risk would be to reduce the power of the federal military.

No, they are just going to keep stockpiling guns and then take on the military if the time comes. Look back in history: every time an armed militia takes on the US government, they always win.

My experience with Texans is that a lot of them are confused on the finer points of belonging to the Union.

The United States has deployed millions of active military personnel to Texas. The locals have taken to referring to them as "neighbors".

Seriously! 11% of active military is Texan, more than any other state (including California and New York). 175,000 active duty soldier are stationed in Texas (2nd only to California). The vast majority of all air force enlisted and all branches medical personnel are trained in San Antonio.

In San Antonio alone, we have 80,000 active duty. >20% of the city is employed in or has an immediate family member at one of the local military bases. This does not include all of the people who have family deployed outside of the city. Similar stories for Ft Hood/Killeen and Ft Bliss/El Paso.

I grew up and live outside of SA. My family was also part of the military, both my folks served. I remember the hoopla about the military taking over, but I think it was a small vocal minority who actually thought it was happening. Other people were just stirring the pot. =/

Its also the same people who want a better military that freak out once they are actually practicing.

He looks like he's lost a lot of weight.

I'm Canadian, and honestly I don't know enough about what Obama has and hasn't done (I'm not going to take the liberal and/or conservative media at face value, and same goes for my facebook feed), but damn do I like the guy.

Going to try to be neutral. He's been great with our economy (70+ months of straight job growth, unemployment lowest it's been in many geafs), but many that are informed on what he's done don't like his war efforts, namely his use of drone strikes, and the amount of debt the country is in. I think that he'll be remembered fondly for his charisma and his taking over of the country post-recession and helping to turn it around.

He will be remembered for Obamacare as well, whether we "keep" it or not it is going to trigger actual, true healthcare reform in this country, which we desperately need.

I just hope we remember the hell he had to go through to get it done. Many people say it's not enough, and it's not. But it's better than nothing and he had to risk everything to get it. It's far from ideal but hey, he did it.

Just like "don't ask don't tell" with Clinton. It was a huge huge risk and was a large step at the time. We make fun of it now, but back then, it was a huge milestone. It broke the ice for the future, and I hope Obamacare does the same.

I think that he'll be remembered fondly for his charisma and his taking over of the country post-recession and helping to turn it around.

      IMO how I think he will be remembered;

      • First black President

      • Killing of Osama bin Laden

      • Responsible for however history will look at the whole Arab Spring and its continuing effects.

      [–]bsbk 49ポイント50ポイント  (2子コメント)

Looking back at his presidency it's going to be very, very clear that Obama did about the best job anyone could have expected him to do with the recession. That's going to count for a lot even though it was almost invisible in our popular discourse at the time.

He also has the benefit of the cheerleader effect with regards to the presidents before/after him

I honestly think you're underestimating Hillary, she's got serious policy chops and loads of experience in getting legislation through. Cheerleader effect on Obama won't be that big.

He'll be seen as partly responsible for the outcomes of the Arab Spring, particularly Libya with help from Britain, but decades of imperialist foreign policy and resource wars have shaped the middle-east. It shouldn't be laid at one man's feet.

That's actually a really good speech... the Trump didn't build the building but he slapped his name on it and took all the credit part, and then lambasting republicans for nominating him with all the incredibly stupid things he's done and said, then waiting till the last minute to disassociate themselves is pretty spot on...

Texas is to the US what Manaus is to Brazil.

A drone flying over Manaus scared the shit out of the people who live there and there's few Whatsapp audios very funny, and doesn't seem like just a joke. Heavy breathing telling friends to stay inside their houses, etc.

The difference is that they're ignorant by the lack of education, while in Texas some people seems to be ignorant on purpose.

      Mike, you're a kiss-ass. Boom. Roasted.

Hillary, you failed the bar. Boom. Roasted.

Chris, I can't decide between a fat joke and a dumb joke. Boom. Roasted.

Ted, you're the zodiac killer. Boom. Roasted.

Joe, your teeth called, your breath stinks. Boom. Roasted.

Trey, where's Trey? Well, there you are. I didn't see you so I figured you'd just scheduled another Benghazi hearing for tonight. Boom. Roasted.

Antonin, you crush your wife during sex and your heart sucks. Boom. Roasted. (Jk, RIP).

      Barney, you're gay.

Marco, Florida called, they think you suck and you're gayer than Barney. Boom. Roasted.

Better yet, do it on the way in, so maybe there will be less seething resentment contributing to all the legislative constipation

We need Question Time in the US Congress. They get pretty rambunctious. It's like a public/legal/civic rap battle with the oohing and aahing.

"We didn't invade Texas. Bin Laden is dead. You fuckers still have your guns. Fuck all y'all!"

I wish he would say that stuff NOW while he still has power. They always show everyone how broken things are after they're done being president... the only person who did it during was JFK and we all know how that ended.

the only person who did it during was JFK and we all know how that ended.

      I can't believe why others don't want too. ;)

Plus you have to remember he can't say a lot of stuff because his words literally will tank a world's worth of economies if he's not careful. Saying a passing thought could make billions of market value disappear or hundreds of thousands rise up in protest.

Totally forgot about the Jade Helm exercises, conservatives honestly thought the federal government was going to invade Texas.

What, like, the government is going to take over, what? It makes so little sense that I can't wrap my head around it. Texas is the US. Can you be invaded by something you are already a part of?

      Texas is the US

Don't let the Texans hear you say that

They would probably just take it literally. "Texas is the US." Now featuring 49 territories.

If it doesn't touch Texas, it's a Yankee state!

So you're letting us keep Mississippi. Thanks I guess.

Yeah, that'd be news to us!

The great thing about Texas is that no sooner did they leave Mexico than they left the US. Sam Huston was sad.

It seems silly, but this is actually the confluence of two types of bullshit.

The first has to do with the fear that the federal government is secretly planning to unveil their transformation from "representative democracy' to "totalitarian regime". So to answer your question, Texas would be sorta the first state to fall to the New Nation of Evil Liberal and Possibly Muslim America. Presumably Texas is first because it's such a conservative stronghold. It's armed to the teeth, armed with personal weaponry, private militias, and a huge concentration of American military soldiers. Texas has a huge independent streak, as evinced by the Civil War, by the Independent Texas movement, by their general sense of fuck-y'all that Texas emotes.

The second bit of bullshit is more nuanced, and has to do with the distribution of power between the state's and the federal government. In short, Republicans believe the fundamental unit of governance is the state, that each state is essentially sovereign in itself, and that federal government is a voluntary association between the states that exists to support the states. Democrats, by contrast, believe that the fundamental unit of governance is the individual, and that the federal government is therefore a necessarily unified entity that exists to promote and protect the interests of every individual within the nation. States, then are basically organizational districts designed to make the governance of a huge-ass nation of 400 million people a bit more manageable.

Stuff like "the Federal Government is gonna take over Texas", then, is sort of conservative shorthand denoting that the government is planning to invade Texas by force, dissolve the state of Texas as a unit of governance, making that region directly under federal control (which, to a conservative Texan who believes this, is a horror unto itself), as part of the larger plan to dissolve all the states, for the federal government to directly control every individual in the nation, without representation or consideration. Martial Law nationwide, no habeus corpus, a pure militaristic liberal dictatorial state. Mandatory abortions and gay sex and hijabs from Dallas to Des Moines.

Edit - This is a vast oversimplification of both the relevant conspiracy theories and of the difference in how Dems and Repubs view the state/federal divide, but I tried to capture the essence. There's all sorts of other shit going on too, like how some people expect the Fed to ship trainloads of Americans off to forced labor camps (you'll see stuff in these discussions about "black trains" or whatever), about disarming the populace by force, about genocide of Christians, whatever. Once you've accepted that the government is going Dictator, you can basically believe anything will happen next.

      You're mostly on point.

I'll add that there's a longer historical narrative that conspiracy theorists have subscribed to for a long time about this federal government invasion eventually coming. "FEMA Camps" is one such concept that has perpetuated for decades now. There is slight levels of truth to it though (like any good conspiracy theory), because if you look at incidents like Ruby Ridge, Waco, Little Rock, and many others. The conspiracy theorists can point to dozens upon dozens of examples proving why the invasion is set.

The motivation of these conspiracies always differs, but both the left wing and the right wing have their own asinine theories about why this would happen. The conspiracy is always a farce though; just imagine what an internal invasion and resulting civil war would do to the American economy. Not only would the American economy shut down, but the entire global economy would be stifled for a decade. It would make no sense for anyone.

Yet Jade Helm was the catalyst my father needed to finally buy a rifle. Idiots.

Republicans believe the fundamental unit of governance is the state, that each state is essentially sovereign in itself, and that federal government is a voluntary association between the states that exists to support the states

We had this argument in the past and it resulted in the Civil War. The federal government is indeed able to force states to do certain things. Time to get over it folks. Good write up though, captures the stance of the Texan mindset well from a neutral standpoint.

Military bases are magnets for the crazies. When I stationed in California, a man was convinced were using our planes to spy on him (specifically him) and kept sending us Freedom of Information Act requests.

A group of old hippie women were convinced that our Global Hawk drones were responsible for the deaths of 100s of children and would protest outside the gate and hand out flyers... The Global Hawk is an unarmed surveillance aircraft.

man, my SO's mom who was all into this Jade Helm stuff bought into one of those companies selling survival gear, and she spent an obscene amount of money on stuff. but it was sweet, she bought me a tyvek suit and everything :(

it just ends up making me sad and frustrated she spends her life in that kind of fear. yeah, and we're in TX, but she's from that crazy part of eastern Oregon where that takeover happened.

Not only that but they claimed there were underground tunnels between Walmart stores to be used to transport troops and materiel!

I'm happy some people think the government is this competent

That's the great conservative paradox. The government is colossally incompetent and can't be trusted with the most basic of tasks but is also a nearly omnipotent agent that can control every aspect of your life so perfectly that only a handful can even tell.

      Reminds me of a joke...

A Jew is on the bus in Nazi Germany and sees another Jew reading Der Stuermer. He asks him why he's reading that. The Jew with the paper answers "Look, I got plenty of troubles at home and at work. The only time I can relax is on the bus. You think I want to read stories like 'Synagogues Vandalized Again' or 'Property of Jews seized?' Not when I can read the Nazi newspapers and see 'Jews Take Over the Banks!' or 'Jews Take Over the Universities!' That's me they're talking about!"

It's depressing that American conservatism has gone so far off the rails that they're now synonymous with batshit conspiracy theorists like Alex Jones.

Even on a left leaning website like reddit, you look at right wing subs and every single one has pretty much become a variant of /r/conspiracy.

Midland, Texas had a Walmart close down for plumbing repairs at the same time a jade helm started and the local idiots decided the government was going to use the Walmart building as an internment camp.

Look up "Jade Helm: Master the Human Domain"

I went to Jade Helm this year. Can confirm, only invaded Texas for about a week.

I currently live in Texas and I'm still laughing my ass off at all of this.

For a while there, you could see mentions of Jade Helm all over Facebook. People were legitimately preparing for a full-scale invasion of the Federal Government. Then all of a sudden, people realized that nothing was actually happening and, lo and behold! Not another single goddamned word was breathed about Jade Helm.

I'm still waiting for the final body count of all those true Texas patriots who were so viciously slaughtered by the military during the Jade Helm operation to thin their ranks and confiscate some of the extra weaponry of proud, paranoid, Texans everywhere.

You'll never find 'em cuz 0bummer buried them in the tunnels underneath all the Walmarts.

Stupid on my part not to realize the lengths our usurper/Kenyan/Muslim/Communist/Socialist/gay president would go to to cover his nefarious tracks... Texans who died fighting this tyranny, RIP.

The reason people watch so much Fox News is because they are being called idiots on literally EVERY OTHER CHANNEL. If you're a republican try watching a late show (or 'news humor show') and within minutes you will be called a knuckle dragging moron. It's a toxic spiral.

That's not for no reason though. Conservative politicians are being elected and completely supported by their voters when they offer a number of beliefs that do not have much basis in reality (thus Colbert and "facts have a known liberal bias"). Additionally, the name calling completely goes both ways with people on the right dismissing liberals as hippies, freeloaders, and unrealistic.

Obviously not every republican is a racist, misogynist, shitlord, nor is every liberal ideal full of merit and realistic. But I can find the full spectrum of liberalism in news but center right conservatives aren't being represented perhaps because the narrative isn't supported or there is a huge market not yet being tapped or some other reason but I don't believe it's an accident that it's like that

Edit: Sitting here thinking about the state of the Republican party, there has been so much bullshit coming out of I find it hard to believe you are too surprised that a lot of pot shots are coming your way. Obama is a Muslim and the worst president ever, women can't get pregnant during rape, no Supreme Court nominee, evolution isn't real, anthropogenic climate change is a lie, tax cuts for the rich, anti gay marriage, drug test welfare recipients, voter ID scams... Does any of this make you as a republican idiot? Hell no but why isnt there a republican revolution to govern based on reason instead of that Tea Party dog whistling nonsense? You aren't a knuckle dragging idiot but many in your party are.... It might be time to stop calling yourself a republican if the party keeps doing things you don't support

i don't get this line of reasoning. it's the same as fat folk shouting about how ultra expensive fashion lines don't pander to them. no shit, fashion is about attractive people wearing attractive clothing - it's not about you. they don't want anything to do with you, the whole industry is built around opposing your values(stuffing your face and being comfortable with who you arei guess). Accepting your body as it is seems kinda anathema to an industry literally selling the idea that you can look more amazing than you do now if you just buy their product.
similarly if you enjoy liberal content creators then maybe accept the idea that liberal content creators have liberal leanings and they do not like the conservative mindset/values. go watch duck dynasty or something

I don't agree with many of Obama's policies during his presidency, but man I feel so bad for that guy. He has been made out by the crazy conservatives to be literally the worst person in the world. He is a decent guy with good intentions. Fuck 2017 is going to suck.

Can confirm, am conservative and don't like Obama much but I'd gladly take him for a 3rd term over any current candidate

Texan here. I thought the whole jade helm thing was fucking hilarious. When these rednecks wearing tin foil cowboy hats would come in to buy guns, they would always tell me about jade helm shit. I had to try so hard not to laugh.

Sounds like you might have some good talesfromthegunstore?

Ah yes, Jade Helm. It's crazy how much Republicans twisted people. I had old high school friends who had a freedom boner and pro-military on anything and everything when Bush was in office, then pretty much acted anti-military when Obama took office. They started blasting the Jade Helm Obama takeover on Facebook.

It was annoying as shit. I made sure call them out on it as much as possible.

I told this story before but it's relevant

a buddy I served overseas with worked at at a gunshop near Garland, TX when the "Jade Helm" training BS was happening. he called me laughing one day because a local had came in looking for batteries for his night vision goggles, my buddy asked him what he needed night vision for? and the guy replied that he patrols his neighborhood after dark to look for the invisible markings the Army leaves on the road when they take over a area.

I know this is supposed to be funny, and it is, but all it did was make me really fucking sad. Like really said that so much of America is that fucking stupid.

Or sad that so much of America is being actively misled by our media to hold totally crazy beliefs. Stupid people don't just come up with this shit, en masse, by themselves.

As a Republican who watches fox news regularly and didn't vote for Obama, damn do I enjoy his public speaking.

He is very easy to listen too. And in contrast with the opinions of the majority of of my party I feel think he is a very likable person.

With the exception of the first Bush, I think partying with every president since Carter would be a hoot.

"our actual government is invading us to overthrow itself and install itself! we have to do something!"

meanwhile Trump tells the country the media and election are rigged without evidence - until a mildly trump-leaning poll in Ohio is released by CNN - then it's "finally an honest poll! and you can tell it's honest because i'm winning."

Yep. This is the one thing that I agree with Trump on. The DNC literally conspired against one of their own candidates.

EDIT: trump most likely means actual tampering of votes. I do not think this will happen.

ITT: butthurt Trumpsters who think that that President of the US gets his information from the TV news.

JADE HELM 15 was a Texas meme for a while. Got a lot of laughs about it.

If you live in Texas you got to see anti-Obama commercials every day from the day he was elected.

Upvote this, it triggers trump supporters!

Because it reminds them that a black president was not only a good president, but calls them out on theis bullshit/conspiracy theory "news"
