I've seen other redditors on this sub mentioning that perhaps we should consider switching to a narrow diamond system. So I gave it some thought and this is what I came up with.
The way I see it, we are merely forcing a 4-2-3-1 system as most players are playing out of position. Martial, Rashford are both strikers and are only masquerading as wingers. Same goes with Mata and Mkhitaryan. This also goes to the midfield players. Again, Pogba played his best football in a "half-wing" position in Juve's diamond formation. This role is not possible in a 4-2-3-1 where Pogba has perhaps been too restricted at times.
Of course such a system lacks in width. Indeed, the fullbacks have to be the main source of width and act as de facto wing-backs. In the case that a wing-back is caught out of position in a counter-attack, the defending midfielder would slot in the middle of the two centre-backs whilst one of the centre-backs temporarily moves to occupy the full-back position depending on which side the attack is coming from. The strikers may also roam wide to create a pseudo 4-3-3 (false 9) shape.
I think this system would suit us perfectly for many reasons. During Mourinho's treble season with Inter, he used the diamond many times to great success. Also, Carrick in my opinion can be our Pirlo. He is vastly underrated. With him in the side, we've won all our games this season.
As for rotation, this would be the substitute for each respective position.
