Rashford and Martial have more technical ability than Memphis. Honestly, Lingard does not. Lingard however is faster over distance and has superior workrate and scores important goals.

But he is not more technically gifted than Memphis.

In addition to one on one dribbling, technique is also about finding space, off the ball movement, choosing the right turn, getting the right pass off under pressure, anticipating ,winning and controlling 50/50s and second balls etc.

On these parameters, Lingard has better technique than Memphis.

Lingard lacks dribbling ability and tricks compared to Memphis but on most other parameters, Lingard is technically better as of today.

Memphis would do well with a spell at a lower half Spanish team which would speed his technical development along these parameters

Lingard isn't good at dribbling though, he rarely takes on and beats a man. He's just not as stupid as Memphis to run directly into the first defender.

I just want him to do well so badly, I loved watching him at PSV - his underlying stats were amazing but some of the points made here could very well be accurate. Based on how many starts he has had since joining it isn't looking good.

I hope the rumours are true about the loan and he can really get it right.

I read this when it was posted and I was nodding along with it.

We took a gamble on the Dutch player of the year, something a lot of european clubs do. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesnt (look a Janssen this year for spurs)

I really cant see him making it in the premier league. His strength on the ball is terrble for someone who came to us with his strength as one of his main plus points.

Hes going to be a beast in Spain or Italy for a team on the cusp.

He will not be beasting in Spain, atleast not in his first year. The Spanish games requires fantastic decision making and technique under pressure which is precisely the area where Memphis struggles right now.

Meh, he's big, strong and fast. His physicality might carry him a little further in Spain. Honestly, England is probably the worst league for him.

I take pride in watching Janssen last year and telling Spurs and United/Arsenal (when they were linked) fans he would be a failure, then watching Spurs in pre-season and repeating my statements only to be called an idiot by Spurs fans. Janssen has nowhere near the talent to succeed in this league and I really thought that was obvious.

So brutally true. Hes still young though, and not gonna write him off completely from top leagues.

He's strong as fuck you're getting that confused with balance and as agility.

He's almost too bulky to play to his strengths now.

He needs a loan in January. He simply does not have a place on the squad at the moment but I'd be extremely pissed if he gets sold.

Decision making and intelligence. Lingard's easily the best in the class at this

I bet this went down well in R/Soccer.

Good analysis really. Like its been mentioned in this thread, there is no shame on the gamble we took. The club has a big decision now as to whether we give him time and work with him to develop or we cut our losses.

You know, if the guy was actually given a fair chance to play this season I'd understand everyone saying he was shit, but he really hasn't. What happened to everyone saying "he was bought for the future"? Do they not understand that he's 21? Lingard is 23, he's been given more time to develop than Memphis, so why are we holding Memphis up to the same standard?

Give him time.

The takeaway is that United should not be gambling on a top player in the dutch league, not as a starter atleast. Thats too big a risk. Let Southampton or some team in Spain or Germany develop them first.

We once gambled on a kid from Portuguese league. Turned out fine.

[–]ParkerZAYoung 0ポイント1ポイント  (1子コメント)

United take risks and develop youth. It's what we're famous for, and a tradition we should continue. Saying we shouldn't gamble on youth, regardless of league, is contrary to the very foundation of this club. Memphis may or may not turn out to be a great player but if we just shunt him off then we really have nothing to brag about, we're just like every other Galactico club.

Memphis was marked for a starter role, even pushing Ashley Young to fullback. Thats what i think doesn't make sense unless we're getting someone proven from PL, Spain or Germany.

Why not? Just one case doesn't dictate a whole system. We had Ruud van Nistelrooy come over from Netherlands...

Memphis is shit. Lingard is way better in every aspect. Even Ashley young is more effective than Memphis.

If he leaves, he won't be missed.
