I was walking my dogs, listening to a podcast. We passed a guy collecting bottles/picking through trash. You know the type; shopping cart or two, maybe homeless or close to it, but not scary, just trying to make a buck.

I thought I heard him call out to me, but I was hoping I was mistaken and just kept walking. I heard him pulling the cart behind me, but I didn't want to turn around. You just don't engage, right? But he's gaining on me, and he's definitely trying to get my attention.

I speed up a little. Not out of fear; even though my dogs are small, they're not tiny, and no one is going to mess with a guy walking two dogs. I just don't want to be hit up for money, or hear a sob story, or whatever. There's almost no upside to this interaction for me.

But he catches up to me. Damn it. I give him a little smile, hope he notices the earbuds, and I keep moving. He starts talking to me, but I can't understand him. "Sorry man, I don't speak Spanish."

"Ah, election tomorrow, yeah?"

"Yup, the election is tomorrow. That's right."

"Hillary or Trump?"

I stop walking and pull one earbud out.

"Me? I'm voting for Hillary."

"No Trump?"

"Noooo. No no no, not Trump. Hillary, 100%"

"Bueno. Trump is very bad."

"Si. Pendejo."

"Yes, yes. Hillary number one!"

"Si, señor!"

Then he hurried off to cross the street before the light turned.
