Exactly what you just said is the answer. Fergie could win the league with this squad. We have a good squad on paper, it should be at least in the top 4. I won't say a better squad than City or Chelsea but we look better than Spurs on paper. We should be competing. So it isn't a matter of talent. It's more desire and winning mentality, what do you want him to do? Leave an audio message saying cmon lads?

I just don't think he can be blamed when we're buying some of the best players in the leagues, and they aren't replicating.

Yeah man we should be going toe to toe with Liverpool in a 3-3 thriller not a 0-0, that's not a "red derby" imo

Exactly that, sounds a strange reference to add what I'm about to say. Fergie once leaving united helped the European Ryder cup team win the Ryder cup. He used an analogy of a flock of geese and how they worked as a team flying over 5000 miles. They kept referring to it as they played and it built a team mentality - they won. (True story and weirdly enough as they won and celebrated a flock of geese flew over).

My point being it's not a matter of talent all the time, its motivation, getting the best out of your players when they're at there worst and building on that.

As an older supporter, I have seen good times come and go before. Sir Matt was castigated for leaving his successor a team that was well past its best. But from the longer perspective, you see that he took over a second-rate club and turned them into European champions.

SAF basically did the same thing, but repeated the success. I think in the long run, whatever the shortcomings of SAF's successor planning, he is still a club legend, but I'll be happy if another manager comes along and does an even better job.

If only it was as simple as 'train up' a manager, otherwise we would of just employed mike phelan wouldn't of we? Also there have been many reports saying that Moyes was not even our first target.

It's all well and nice to believe in fairytales, but they don't happen just because you want them to

Yeah course not, I agree with you. I've even heard it reported somewhere that Fergie wanted it to bomb with Moyes to prove his excellence more so, hence blocking the José deal at the time from happening.

You're getting into some ridiculous conspiracy stuff here. No one is ever going to compare to Sir Alex's record.

Also there have been many reports saying that Moyes was not even our first target.

That was always just SAF bullshitting years after the fact to cover up his terrible decision.

Fergie gets a free pass from me. The amount he did for this club will always be unrivalled, other people needed to start taking responsibility.

He left United a weak squad, but he did try to replenish it.

He tried to get Hazard, Lucas, Neymar, Thiago(the one Moyes bungled) was part of his plan, he wanted to keep Pogba, he left Jones, Smalling, Rafael, and Buttner.

SAF tried, but he either lost out of the players he wanted (Neymar, Lucas, Hazard) or the ones he bought, the managers that succeeded him mismanaged (Thiago, Buttner, Rafael, Chicarito) or they had injury problems (Jones).

The only young player that Ferguson brought in that is actually a part of the team is Smalling.

And arguably Rooney, but that was a different time I'll admit. He took the eye off the ball and let his reputation carry his teams over the line for fear of disappointing him. You can't replicate that kind of mentality easily. Mourhinos aura only bought him a few games before the familiar haunts came back to us again this season.

Yes, but I dont think he thought Rooney was the guy to take them forward, hence why he bought RVP and built around him when he lost out on players in 2013.

Your missing one point with SAF. By his account his decision to leave was made fairly quickly and it was for the benefit of his wife after her sister passed. It wasn't like he was planning it for years.

Obviously his age indicates he should have given it some thought, but then again his responsibility was to manage the team and win. He certainly did that. So I personally believe his responsibilities ended there. After all the club should be bigger than one man.
