…and one of the only two men in the class started flipping the fuck out. When my professor first opened the video he began to complain immediately saying something along the lines of “ugh, seriously? do we really have to watch this?” and he kept sighing heavily throughout the video. About halfway in he just totally snapped and said very loudly “I CAN’T BELIEVE WE’RE WATCHING THIS. THIS IS BULLSHIT.”
I can’t believe someone would actually act like this in a college class. My professor, who knows a hell of a lot more than he does, decided the video is well-made and applicable to the subject material. And yet just because the internet told him Anita Sarkeesian is the devil he immediately discounts the contents of the video before even watching it and hearing what the professor has to say about it? I swear, these people are like caricatures of themselves.

Kinda wish they could have shown some Anita videos in my gender studies class back in college. Might have helped stunt my year-long anti-SJW phase that took place soon after graduation.
Still have no idea why it happened. I enjoyed the hell out of that class.
[–]sibeerian 40 points41 points42 points  (4 children)
Her videos being shown in actual classes is the confirmation that she won. That fact signifies a hell of a lot more than GG'ers getting upvotes on Reddit and YT.
[–]_MissFrizzle 12 points13 points14 points  (3 children)
I won't feel like society is getting better until YT, Reddit, and Twitter reflect how i feel tho
[–]sibeerian 14 points15 points16 points  (2 children)
They won't ever reflect how you/we feel :(
People with strong emotions and lots of time on their hands will always dominate those arenas. I should probably have said "16 year old GG'ers" in my last comment.
[–]_MissFrizzle 6 points7 points8 points  (1 child)
fair enough. I wonder why I have this unhealthy obsession with looking at those comments/videos/etc? Like cutting, but for my ego
[–]ConVito 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
Strong convictions and a sturdy constitution, I'd wager. I know I personally have a tough time watching/reading any anti-SJW propaganda for the opposite reason. Those sorts of things often make me feel legitimately nauseous.

On the plus side, I guess at least one "anti-SJW" has now seen one of her videos all the way through.
[–]sibeerian 20 points21 points22 points  (0 children)
The funny thing is how this looks from the outside. The other students probably were all "WTF?" about his behavior. And being as emotionally involved as he were, he probably had difficulties getting across his message in a more elequent way than "She is bad! Bad!".
There is also a lesson for the rest of us here. I've overheard and observed some GG-related stuff at work and I really had to hold myself back to not come across as overly invested when someone was spouting misogynistic shit and misrepresenting how "SJWs" are supposedly targeting poor oppressed gamers.
[–]koronicusSocial Justice Platypus 64 points65 points66 points  (9 children)
Well honestly, he probably spent the whole time staring out the window, plugging his ears.
[–]ScabWingedAngel 49 points50 points51 points  (8 children)
And apparently commenting, albeit out loud. I guess he's trying his best to comment while not watching it...
[–]Leagle_Egal 65 points66 points67 points  (5 children)
He probably ended up looking like a massive misogynist to the rest of the class, too. Despite Sarkeesian being an internet sensation, the vast majority of people in the real world have no clue who she is or what her work entails. In order to know her AND the controversy around her you generally have to be either an active feminist and probably a gamer, or an anti-feminist who is also a gamer. Pretty small niche.
Plus, if you actually watch her videos (particularly the ones that would be shown in a classroom), unless you get REALLY nitpicky she rarely says anything that the average person would consider outlandish or controversial. So basically it's a video of a woman pointing out basic feminism 101 points like "gratuitous sexualized violence against women for entertainment is a bad thing" and then this jerk in the back of the room yelling "BULLSHIT" in response.
Basically he probably came off looking like a heartless monster to any layman in the room.
[–]ScabWingedAngel 44 points45 points46 points  (0 children)
Sure, to the layperson who hasn't heard of Sarkeesian, he comes off as a bigoted fool getting annoyed by a simple feminism 101 video, yes...
But to those of us who know about the "controversy"... he comes off as a bigoted fool getting annoyed by a simple feminism 101 video.
[–]blabgasm 22 points23 points24 points  (1 child)
That was my immediate thought as well. The internet really creates the illusion that these debates are more salient than they actually are to most people. In reality people, even college people, are overwhelmingly dis-involved in internet culture wars.
I've been in debates with people on Reddit about this since I'm a graduate student in Anthropology. Pretty flaky flower-power for these STEMlords (that's a whole other post, though). In my cohort's advanced theory course I was the one who explained what micro-aggressions and trigger warnings were (in a very neutral way). You'd think graduate level anthropology would be all over that Esjay-jay, right? Yes, but not in any way KiA types would recognize. Their understanding of social justice is very distorted compared to what most people in RL mean when they say that. And everyone else just doesn't care one way or the other, but will still probably hold the baseline 'don't be an asshole, or a _____ist' personality that is characteristic of most college kids.
It's actually kind of amazing there were two people in the class that both know who AS is in the first place. For instance, I had to tell my graduate level 'Race and Justice' class (so basically, just the sort of advanced SJW-cum-'fake science' these guys love to hate) what the Red Pill was. It came up because the professor showed us some images of the posters RP littered Michigan's campus with.
Anyway, all this rambling is to say that outside of the vaccuum chambers of the internet most people (even the people most likely have strong stakes in the debate) don't know, and don't care. But, nobody likes an asshole.
(Edited to remove wordsalad monologue in the middle)

[–]Allabear 7 points8 points9 points  (0 children)
To be fair, sometimes the asshole actually does know more than the instructor. I had one psych instructor dock me marks for using the singular they in an essay.

One of my profs in grad school pretty much had the same degree as I did. I don't think I ever argued as much (or at all) with a professor other than her. She thought I was really annoying.
[–]blabgasm 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
I'm intrigued by this. Can you give me more context? What were your degrees, and what did you argue about? In my university I was shocked to learn that they let PhD students (but not with M.A.s) teach intro courses. Like, 2nd year PhD students. So, basically people with a bachelors, and 1 stinking year of grad school (I don't think you should be primary instructor without a Master's at least). Was it something like that?
[–]jmarquisoNo I'm working, and your made up stats are silly 11 points12 points13 points  (0 children)
I love how the internet paints her as an extremist when really she just lists stuff falling under feminism 101. Really just defining stuff and using video games as an example of these tropes.

It's like the one dude in my geology class who insisted on arguing with the professor about the origin of life (the student was a creationist).
[–]blabgasm 9 points10 points11 points  (4 children)
I had a evolution debate with this major asshole in my intro to Anth class waaaaay back in the day. Like, this guy was a piece of shit. He asked how I was doing one time before I knew what a turd he was, and I started to tell him honestly how my mother way dying, and I was having a hard time. Right in the middle he took a a fucking phone call! It wasn't even ringing, but on vibrate! Who does that?! It wasn't like he did the fake 'how are you' and I started unloading. Like he very deliberately sought out this involved conversation with me. So rude. Anyway, we get into it about evolution some time later, then class starts. Lo and behold, we are talking about evolution. The prof was an old tenured Italian lady who kinda hated Americans a bit and took no shit. It was glorious watching her wreck that little shit. I never much cared for her, but in that moment she was my goddess.
[–]Vadara 3 points4 points5 points  (3 children)
Right in the middle he took a a fucking phone call! It wasn't even ringing, but on vibrate! Who does that?!
This is unusual? My phones have always been on vibrate since I think ringtones are obnoxiously distracting and bring too much attention to oneself.
[–]blabgasm 3 points4 points5 points  (2 children)
The 'who does that' was in reference to 'who answers a phone call when someone is telling you about their terminally ill mother' not the phone vibration! The point I was making is that it wasn't ringing obnoxiously or anything like that. I, and any other polite person, would ignore it in a circumstance like that!

[–]othellothewise0xE2 0x80 0x94 40 points41 points42 points  (2 children)
'Cause it's a general ed requirements for undergrads (was a GEO 101 class). I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted to if he had a choice.
[–]zeeblecroid 9 points10 points11 points  (0 children)
Now and then you'll get some crackpot ideologue or another taking a class like that with the intent of picking fights, or maybe with the goal of Defeating The System From Within or Exposing The Horrible Abuses or some other capitalize-all-the-things quest.
[–]climbandmaintain 14 points15 points16 points  (0 children)
Which is why those courses are required!
[–]Baryonyx_walkerigoony beard-man 2 points3 points4 points  (2 children)
In my intro to Geology 101 class, my professor started the first class by saying that the Earth is billions of years old and that if anyone had an issue with that for religious reasons they should drop out now.
It was three classes in when a gal flipped out about it and he just said, "Out. Now. NOW." She left. The class went on without disruption.
Cool guy. I'm friends with him still. He was one of the paleontologists who described Bambiraptor!
[–]DrunkRobot97 1 point2 points3 points  (1 child)
On one hand I understand him entirely, he doesn't want anybody to hold back the entire class with their outdated views. But arguably it is them who need the class the most. If they don't get engaged with the scientific method and the modern consensus, then they'll pass on those views to their kids and we won't move on. Of course, it does depend on a willingness to learn, it's hopeless if they don't accept that they do not know best and are doing this for more than just a piece of paper, but if even members of the Phelps family (Westburo Baptist Church) can escape from the cycle and join the modern world, then it's worth trying.
[–]Freya-FreedSensual Jew Whisperer 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
It really depends on what "flipping out" entails. Some people can not be reasoned with. And yeah, not need to hold an entire class back to have to argue with someone who thinks the earth is 6000 years old despite overwhelming evidence.

This is so true. Like, when I find myself avoiding discussions on this site, I sometimes have to stop and ask myself why. Am I afraid they'll say something convincing? Or just of wasting time with an argument? And if it's the former, shouldn't I be open to that? Then I go right ahead in and, lo and behold, it's the same arguments I've seen hundreds of times and have created satisfying responses to.

I remember one of my profs was an antivaxer and encouraged her students in the freaking child development department to question vaxinations too. Instead of crying and making a big fuss about it in class, I politely voiced my concerns to others in the department.
    [–]akestralunspellable surname 38 points39 points40 points  (8 children)
What did the prof say? Did they ask him to justify his position or provide some context for his remarks?
    [–]damnedreddit[S] 70 points71 points72 points  (7 children)
She just signaled for him to be quiet and said that we'd discuss the video after it was done.
After the video was done she quickly made it pretty clear that she agreed with the contents of the video, so he kind of shut up from that point onward.
    [–]moonluck 30 points31 points32 points  (1 child)
Does your professor know about the internet hatred of her? That could spawn an interesting discussion.

What video was it? I haven't actually watched any of her stuff. I'm barely a gamer these days. I just hang out here because it's emotionally fulfilling.

[–]jmarquisoNo I'm working, and your made up stats are silly 2 points3 points4 points  (0 children)
Just because the professor agrees with something, doesn't mean that he can't start a debate / discussion (I know there will be the usual gish gollop and unproductive class time, but you know, missed opportunity).
It's how I got through a lot of college - you tend to be more impressive if you take a contrarian point of view and use research to back it up. At least that was my experience.
Edit: and by research, I mean real research, not conservapedia.

I wonder if I should one day sit down with my cousin and watch us a Sarkeesian video. He's an anti-feminist, gator, Trump supporter, anime loving, memer. Not that there's anything wrong with loving anime or memes in general, it's just that, he's family to me, but damn it edge-lord bingo shouldn't be this easy. He knows to keep most of that to himself, and I keep my politics out of our gaming too, but sometimes his crap leaks out.

It's not even really an opinion to state, women are by and large objectified and removed of depth or agency in the vast majority of video games.
[–]McJohnson88So Long And Thanks For All The Rips 21 points22 points23 points  (3 children)
You're right, but I've kinda noticed a strange double-standard regarding expression of that particular opinion, too:
    • Guy says women aren't depicted well in video games; reaction: "Yeah, he's absolutely right, maybe we should do something about that..."
    • Woman says women aren't depicted well in video games; reaction: "OMG STFU DUMB B**H C*T STOP BEING TRIGGERED EVERYTHING'S FINE THESE AREN'T FOR YOU etc. etc."
...I'm generalizing, of course, but it still seems pretty odd...
[–]CaelrieNew Mod, Same Great Oppression! 17 points18 points19 points  (2 children)
It's not odd when you remember that society considers men credible until proven otherwise, and women not worth listening to until proven otherwise.
    [–]blabgasm 6 points7 points8 points  (0 children)
Parallels with racial equality debates as well. Tim White points this out all the time. His sheer whiteness gives him credibility as a commentator on race, because when People of Color do the same their views, no matter how academic, are inherently seen as self-serving.

When I took a psychology of sex and biology class, there was moments when the prof. would have some moments that seemed set-up to learn something new amid boisterious posturing of the students. (I should mention, the alternative was pop-quizes if no one participated, so the class was always trying avoid that). The prof. was also a couples therapist, so he would be good with 'chilling out' when one side was dominating the discussion and/or impeding the progress of the other to share something. Due to the class and how personal stuff might get, it was usually men v women when the inter-student chat would go either into learning more or go a bit out off the rails. As I said tho, the professor was good with honing in on the facts (many of which is provided not just from the text book assigned).

When I was doing my undergrad I took first year philosophy and at the last minute (first lecture of the semester) our lecture decided he was changing the lecture module to focus on climate change rather than classics.
People fucking freaked out, there were a strong cohort of mature students in the class that were very vocal about how they thought climate change was a liberal conspiracy and "...doesn't climate change just move in circles anyway?".
I always thought that when I went to college everybody would stop being a dickhead and just grow up a little. The reality is, is that these people usually just get worse and more wrapped up in their own bullshit.

How many stories of bigots erupting in college classrooms do you need to hear before you start to consider that maybe they actually happen?
      [–]damnedreddit[S] 18 points19 points20 points  (0 children)
Eh, I don't think there's anything wrong with approaching anything you hear online with a healthy dose of skepticism. People are all too eager to accept stories that push narratives they believe in, without seeing if there's proof to back up the story or not.
Sadly, I cannot offer any proof for my story because 1. I wouldn't want to reveal this guy's information in fear he'd be harassed and 2. I wouldn't want to reveal my information either as I prefer to stay anonymous online as a pre-transition trans woman who greatly prefers that people don't know how I currently look like. So all you have to go on with this story is my word, and I honestly agree with republicannarnia that someone's word online is hardly worth enough to prove a story true. I just wanted to share it because I found it so shocking that someone would actually act like this somewhere besides online and was interested to see how people would react.

Especially a story that's pretty much just someone reacting like the hater crowd does when they hear Anita Sarkeesian's name just like they usually do, only it's in real life instead of on the internet.
I'm sure if you look for stories from students of things that happened in class, you'll find no end of people disrupting class to angrily disagree with the professor because of their beliefs, on all sorts of topics. This is no different.

Adults can control their impulses well enough to not interrupt everyone else's viewing. They can then wait to discuss with the class afterwards why they disagree with the video or why he considers her to be an invalid academic resource.
We'll never know whether this guy had a valid opinion on this topic because rather than choosing to discuss the video with the class, he just called it bullshit while throwing a tantrum and left it at that.
          [–]climbandmaintain 18 points19 points20 points  (4 children)
The constant sighing and shouting to turn it off are childish. If you disagree with the content raise the objection after the video and do it like a goddamn adult. It's not like Anita's video was saying "ALL MEN ARE EVIL AND IF YOU SEE A MAN SITTING NEXT TO YOU STAB HIM REPEATEDLY WITH THE CLASP OF YOUR PURSE!"

Like, please walk me through the specific things I've said and how that's projecting (which, I might add, is defined as taking my own experiences, views, and emotional reactions to a particular stimulus and imaging that's how someone else reacts to the same stimulus).

Yeah some people try to turn every word or phrased used "against them" back on the other side without really understanding the word or how to apply it in real life. "Those SJWs are the real racists" as if the words racist or sexist was just a common slur like "cuck" and means nothing besides just a new word to insult people with.
            "No! You're the puppet!"
            [–]Ayasugi-san 13 points14 points15 points  (0 children)
Yes, what we really need are colleges where any student can disrupt class to present any opinion they wish at any time. I'm sure they'd be the most conductive to learning.
            [–]iamspacedadPsy-ops Specialist 4 points5 points6 points  (0 children)
God forbid someone in college sit through a video the professor decided was relevant to the course material like a mature adult, waiting for discussion after. Or, as is often the case, write in the assigned essay for the class attempting to make a cogent argument for why they disagree.
Guess what: You can have dissenting opinions at college. But you have to actually have to back your shit up, and sourcing a bunch of redpill vlogger dickwads or a wiki'd list of argumentative fallacies won't suffice. Oh and you probably shouldn't throw a tantrum in the middle of a class.
