I honestly don't know how people can defend something that threatens the physical lifespan of a game. What if someone twenty years from now wants to play the game, and the authentication servers are offline? What if someone needs to install a compatibility patch, but the anti-tamper mechanisms prevent that?

It's as if the game won't exist anymore if something like that happens.
