Kinda like how laws designed to protect minorities and women end up making it less appealing to hire them. Any business is going to be acutely aware of threats to their bottom line and public image.

Set up special protections to 'shield' them from discrimination, yet they always include some kind of punishment, so they can be used as a sword. "Be sure to hire women or we'll fine you" becomes "Hi, I'm a woman, and if you don't hire me I'm going to get them to fine you."

A black lesbian female becomes a walking lawsuit risk because anything that could be perceived as harassment or discrimination can result in penalties, not to mention office sensitivity training and all the accommodations you might have to make to keep them comfortable. BUUUUT it is illegal to discriminate in hiring, so you make up for the risk with lower pay or you find a valid excuse to fire them... or you move them to a department where they can't do much damage (read: have much influence). Start imposing equal pay requirements and then the jobs get exported to countries without said protections or done by genderless, raceless robots. By demanding special treatment it suddenly becomes clear just how replaceable (i.e., NOT special) you really are.

Even if minority candidates are technically as competent and proficient at their job as anybody else, the standard white cis male doesn't come with that sort of risk premium, and produces just as much value.

There is indeed a balance to be struck between accommodating everyone's needs on one hand and telling people to suck it up and quit whining on the other... but when the state comes in and starts swinging the long, heavy dick of the law around, the entire interaction changes. It is not a negotiation or even an plea for consideration when one party has a gun backing them up.

Simply put, the only way to make it TRULY more appealing to hire minorities/women (and not just as a PR stunt!) is to remove the special protections (basic protections remain, of course) and demonstrate that they produce as much value as everyone else. And part of producing value is learning to put aside your personal preferences for a larger goal rather than demanding everyone else conform to your ideals. It means adapting to an environment with the goal of maximizing long term success. And THAT seems to be the part SJWs don't want to accept.

You can try and make hiring artificially equal but the market isn't going to be fooled. The company hiring on a bunch of special snowflakes for diversity purposes even though they produce less value on average and bring lawsuits with them is less adaptive to a competitive business environment than the one made up of your basic office drones who don't complain incessantly and are willing to suffer discomforts as necessary. And if I'm deciding which company to hire with my money, I damn sure prefer the second one.

So yes, you'll be asked to sacrifice some of yourself in order to maximize everyone's prosperity. Welcome to the world.
