We lost, and we haven't been good recently, and there is a lot of panic around this sub. However, there are noticeable improvements from the past 3 years, and I'm very confident that we're well on our way to getting back to the United we used to be, and let me tell you why, with a comparison to a team with similar levels of historical success and successful coaches: The University of Michigan Wolverines (American) football team.
For all non-Americans here, the University of Michigan has the winningest football team in college football history, with 933 all-time wins, which is 38 wins ahead of the next closest team.
UM has had a long history of winning notably under longtime coaches Bo Schembechler and Lloyd Carr. This was until around 2008, when Lloyd Carr retired after 12 years in charge, whose tenure included a National Championship, and numerous wins over highly touted rivals Ohio State, Michigan State, and Notre Dame, all of which were considered tops in the nation over that time.
When Carr retired, a 7 year period of 3 coaches, many losses, and unprecedented levels of futility ensued.
- Carr's replacement, Rich Rodriguez, only won 15 of his 37 games coached(which was the worst of any coach in the program's history), and was fired after 3 seasons, after his defense set a school record for worst defense in the history of the team, and was unable to bring in players good enough to help the team succeed.
- Rodriguez's replacement, Brady Hoke, had slightly more success, winning 31 of 51 games, but was fired after his 4th year, when the Wolverines only won 5/12 games, while he was also unable to bring in players good enough to succeed.
- Finally, in 2015, Michigan hired Jim Harbaugh, who had been the coach of the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL, a team which he lead to a Super Bowl appearance. Harbaugh won 10/13 games in 2015, despite the team struggling very early in the season and losing to their biggest rivals, Michigan State and Ohio State. The current 2016 squad is undefeated, and is ranked as the #3 team in the nation, and is a favorite to win this year's National Championship, while recruiting multiple excellent players, including one in particular who is a finalist to win college football's POTY award.
The comparisons between United and Michigan are very similar. SAF was our Lloyd Carr, who retired after years and years of success, leaving David Moyes (Rich Rodriguez) in charge, who was unable to even come close to matching that success. We then brought in LVG (Brady Hoke) who had noticeably more success, but was still unable to get us over the hump.
Jose Mourinho, now he is our Jim Harbaugh. We can already see how improved our attacking is, and how, even though the goals and wins aren't quite there, everything seems to feel like it's going to be better than it has been the past 4 or 5 years. We now have a proven coach, who has taken other teams to the highest levels of success in the past, and is more than capable of doing it with us as well. So let's not panic, let's support our club, and let's know that things are going to come good, and we will be back to being the United of old, just like the Michigan Wolverines have done.
Tl;Dr: We're going to be just fine. GGMU
