1,808 Readers for 2 years!
It's been a very long time since I featured /r/OneTruthPrevails, back on November 29th, 2014. I could have certainly waited a couple of weeks and featured it on the 29th, made it an even two years, but I didn't. It's been a very long time since I featured anything and that sense of reason has been lost to me, replaced by pizza and the oncoming dread of Tuesday's election. Pour one out for us, international readers.
It had 475 readers when I featured it last, and it's grown to almost four times that size since then. It's added a Discord server, which I am constantly idling in and reading. It's got stickied discussions of new episodes and manga, and the comments are far more active than last. As it was in November of 2014, the kind and excited community has not dulled an inch. It's still the place to talk about Detective Conan (and Case Closed) on Reddit, it's still the place to ask where you left off, or to find out whether it's the show for you. For me, it's a place to read every day, as I am not caught up on either manga or anime, and find out whether or not they've released a new movie. They have and it looks pretty cool.
I'll point you to my last feature to explain the show in detail, but at its core, Detective Conan is a mystery of the week anime/manga series that's so big in Japan, it's got its own airport and restaurant. Worth it, in my opinion. I enjoy mystery, and through the 800 episodes I've watched so far, I've found few not worth having sat through. If you like mystery shows, watch it. If you like watching Conan do some dope shit like driving a sports car off an exploding skyscraper, watch it. If you wanna see a martial arts master upstage a gentleman thief/magician, watch it. If you wanna struggle through puzzles, some of which you can't solve because you're not the master of the Japanese language, then still watch it because it's fun anyway.
We did an interview with the subreddit founder in 2014, which you can look at in one of the links above. I reached out to him again, and here's what he had to say.
1. First off, tell me a bit about yourself.
/u/ReasonShallPrevail Well, /r/OneTruthPrevails is the biggest english-speaking Conan fan community online.
As moderators, we tend to keep things simple - so long as submissions are relevant, SFW, and properly credited, they stay. Since the DC fan community is very friendly, this policy generally works.
As a subreddit, we provide users with a place to discuss Detective Conan news, theories, and fan works. Fans of Aoyama's other works, such as Magic Kaito and Yaiba, are welcome as well. We also host weekly discussion threads of the latest scanlations/episodes.
2. What has been your favorite post on /r/OneTruthPrevails so far?
/u/ReasonShallPrevail It'd have to be the 1000 subscriber survey results, as it served not only as a statement on how far we had come, but also granted us some insight on who our users really were. It also reminded a lot of us of just how long we've been following this series. Shoutouts to the thread announcing that Crunchyroll had picked up DC as well, if only for the hype.
3. How has /r/OneTruthPrevails changed since the last feature, and how do you predict it will change in the following year or two?
/u/ReasonShallPrevail We've grown a lot. We're sitting at almost 2k subscribers now, we're breaking our records every other months, are are around 10k uniques/30k pageviews every month now. We've become the biggest english-speaking DC community on the net, largely due to the scanlators being regulars (and, in some cases, mods).
We've changed quite a bit as a result of this growth as well. Our rules have tightened. The OTP community has expanded onto two other subreddits, which serve as anime and manga archives, respectively. We now maintain a fairly active discord server as well, which helps cultivate a proper sense of community and offers our users an occasional inside look at the scanlation process.
4. For those interested in either returning to or starting Detective Conan, where would you say they should begin? What resources and sites could you recommend for them?
/u/ReasonShallPrevail I'd recommend that new viewers focus on catching up on the plot, and then watch filler cases whenever they're in the mood. This approach allows them to join the community - and thus the discussion - as soon as possible.
The DCWiki maintains a list of episodes that indicates which are important to the plot, which feature character development, which feature notable changes in the relationships between characters, and which are just filler. Unfortunately, I don't think any such list exists for the manga.
5. Anything else you would like to say?
/u/ReasonShallPrevail Check us out! Join our discord! We're a fun bunch, and we only bite on the rarest of occasions.
Thank you to /u/ReasonShallPrevail for answering my questions. I feel the same urge to drone on as last time. I could type for days about Detective Conan and its amazing community, but this isn't about that per se. It's to draw attention to the subreddit and that's been done. If you're interested in the show or community, come give it a look and watch a few episodes. They may have suggestions for which ones to watch, but I've always stuck with the first 3-5 when showing a new viewer. They're usually hooked by the surgeon case.
While CrunchyRoll has the newer episodes in high quality, old episodes can be harder to come by. Ask in the comments on /r/OneTruthPrevails or join the Discord and someone will help point you in the right direction. The community is generally happy to help people get involved with it, and while this mostly takes the form of helping returning viewers/readers by identifying where they left off, they do help new readers figure out what to look for and where to find it. While it is a niche, it's the kind of niche that's warm and fuzzy to be in.
