The problems with our attack (self.reddevils)

Barring the games against Stoke and Burnley, there are a couple of things I've noticed in almost every one of our games so far, which were highlighted against Fenerbahce.

  • Players like Mata, who is our main creative outlet, needs people running in behind the opposition defense, stretching their back four and creating space. This absolutely does not happen with our team. Every once in a while I'll see Lingard or Rashford make a great run which goes unnoticed. Everyone wants the ball to his feet, and by the time we're attacking the opposition defense is compact and settled.

  • Our complete lack of width in some games is astounding. Darmian and Rashford were great at hugging the touchline against Burnley, but it was completely absent yesterday. It seems like all our players want to come inside, and with Ibrahimovic dropping deep, it leads to a lot of players in the same general area, and no creative play at all.

  • I absolutely hate to use these examples, but every time I see Liverpool or City play, the movement of their front four/three is really dynamic. If you look at Rooney's goal yesterday, it was fucking amazing, but every player around him was aimlessly drifting forward, with no real movement at all.

Why is it that after 3 years and 2 different managers (not counting Giggs) and spending a billion in transfers, we're still back at the same step? It hurts me to see managers like Conte and Guardiola doing good (so far) in their first season in the Premier League, and Klopp, who's completely transformed the way Liverpool play.

I'm not ranting or complaining. Just seriously concerned about the state of our club. Also, I die a little every time I see Ibrahimovic wave everyone off a 40-yard freekick just to smash it into the wall.

we desperately need wingers

im pretty sure we could have signed a mahrez type players to give us that

miki, mata, rashford, lingard - these are not wingers

That's kind of the point though isn't it?

After all the money we've spent, we don't need to need to buy more players (maybe a new RB). Martial, Rashford, Mkhi, Lingard. These are all great players, which most teams in the PL will want to have in their team,Its just that nothing is working for us atm

We can't play with Mata and Ibra. I said after the Burnley game that our chance creation is laboured with the two of them in the same side. Yes we created chances but we had lots of chances to counter, 3 or 4 passes and you're clean through on goal.

How many of our goals end up with 7 or 8 people in the box, it's so crowded. Think of Hull, or Watford or Stoke where we scored. The box is crammed.

We need wingers who LIKE going on the outside.

We literally have players out of form. You can see how Martial was playing, he isn't even sure that he can beat the first defender, he is becoming what memphes has become. Rushford isn't even winger I think we are wasting him like we wasted Mata on wing for the sake of fitting him into the system. During yesterday match I knew our midfield is too weak as the match just started. No one was even there in the mid to control the game and be there when facing counter. Attacking was like we didn't even trained for months, had no strategy or plan.

It feels like every player in feeling the pressure and is reading dailymails articles all the time.

Mourinho should cut all the internet/social media/TV/newspaper from everyone's house so that they don't lose the simple technique they know because of pressure.

Firstly 100% spot on

On the first point with Mata & people making runs. Ibra is very much similar to Rooney in the sense they both drop off so then we basically have a line of for example Rashford Mata Ibra Lingard with no one else in front of them or occupying the box. This won't work unless you have a special attack like Barcelona. & even then they have people drifting in

I agree, and, even though this thread seems to love him, I think Mkhi was a mistake by Mourinho.

He should've bought Sane instead.

Mkhi, at least last match, seemed to do what I've always hated Mata playing RW for--drift inside leaving the RB as the lone wing player.

Once the RB loses the ball, with these central players who are all just ball watching the RB, the other teams sets out on a counter attack down that right side and bangs us.

Martial, Rashford, Lingard, Mkhi, and Depay all want to come inside and play CF or CAM.

Rooney, Zlatan, Pogba, all want to play CAM when they're assigned different positions.

Our attack is too centrally focused. When Pogba is playing the best curls into the box as a CM, you know we're lacking true wingers.
