For me our main issue is the fixation on going back to being the best in one step. And the cringey catchphrases and shit to go along with it.

Let's aim at securing a top four spot for 2-3 seasons with relative ease. Let's aim at reinstating us as a CL club. Let's aim at getting ourselves out of the group stage from whichever European competition we are in. Let's aim at improving the team cohesion while we are at it.

Then we can start getting giddy about our title chances. Or start making statements like, "We are United, we should be aiming to win the title every season". Or start getting over excited with the transfers we make every single season. We were not equipped to win the PL last season nor are we this season. Yet we went into the season as title contenders and what not.

Agree with all the above.

I think the frustrating thing is we would have been there or thereabouts by now if there if we didn't completely dismantle ourselves in the first two seasons following SAF's departure.

I spend too much time thinking about what ifs during this time - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2221929/Sir-Alex-Ferguson-replacement-known-Manchester-United-says-Ed-Woodward.html

I'm under no illusion now however that we're in for a long slog to get back to fighting for the top spot. I just hope the likes of Pogba realise the task ahead and are committed to the cause.

I think that's excellently written really.

Every season we buy other team's good players (or great players as in the case of this summer) and then we get really excited about it and declare ourselves title challengers, despite the previous seasons showing that we're not near the title.

This season hasn't been kind in that the other teams have massively stepped it up and we've also had some fairly unlucky results but in reality the mentality around that squad is far from title challengers.

I know that people will say that's why we brought in Mourinho and they're right but I think given the nature of the previous few seasons, it'll take longer than a few months to see any consistent improvements (we've already seen some improvements now and again, some swagger back into the play).

Sensible post, completely agree. Even if we dont make top 4, I would prefer stability and systematic rebuilding with mourinho and if he is able to address these issues I have no doubt we will be competitive again

Then why did we sack LVG? I was all for sacking LVG because I thought bringing in Jose would take us to the next level but it hasn't. We should get top four with this team and anything else should be considered a failure.

The only way I'd say Jose stays on is if we see a big improvement in the style of play and a clear vision of what Jose is trying to do, something I've not seen yet. If there isn't any improvement between now and the end of the season do you think we should stick with him?

Been saying this for the last 3 seasons.

We were never going to win the league on Jose's first season, that's wishful thinking.

Except that's exactly what Jose did with his first full season at Porto, at Chelsea, at Inter. Then a second place finish with 92 points in his first season with Madrid (and Copa del Rey and CL semis), and a third place finish with Chelsea again.

Jose performs in his first season, or used to at least. That's precisely why he was hired. That's precisely why he was given a record amount if money to spend over summer.

Perhaps, however the jobs were different. Porto he actually finished third in his first season there EDIT - sorry, you did say his first full season at Porto, my bad. With Chelsea, I don't think they were ever considered strong title favourites every season until Jose put them on the map. And with Inter there's really only two teams Juventus and Roma, compared to the Premier League where, now, you have 6 or 7 teams who could win the title. Like Jose said, in Italy you already know who is going to win the league, in Germany you already know who's going to win the league, in France, maybe in Spain. But with the Premier League, it's not so predictable.

Jobs are different, but the point isn't that he has often won the title in his first season with clubs, but that in every one of his previous roles there's been an immediate and positive impact straight-away. With his mid-season takeover of Porto, or his Real Madrid, or his second stint at Chelsea, even if he didn't win in his first season, the signs were there that we would in his second.

The problem is this feels like a third-season Jose Mourinho where there's lots of recrimination and under-performing and spin, rather than one of those fresh and optimistic first-season Mourinho-teams. And Mou has never shown he can come back from that third-season slump.
