You have to get a growler fill for Brash. Pretty sure they don't bottle or can for retail yet.
They were filling crowlers on-premises at one point, not sure if they still are.

The owner of Brash also owns Petrol Station. You can always find Brash on tap there. And yes, Brash is by far the best brewery in Houston, imho.

Yep. I actually remember reading an interview a while back where he met with a representative from either Miller-Coors or ABI. The representative threw a hypothetical question asking how much would it take for him to sell the brewery. He threw out an extremely inflated number and the guy came back 20-30 minutes later with the offer.
They're hungry and given the chance, would take out every brewery here if they could.
Well yeah, they want to stay dominant. There's no way they're gonna come up with a Budweiser IPA and people aren't going to support a new "craft" brewery that's run by ABI or Miller-Coors. Much easier (I'd imagine) to buy out an existing brewery that has a good reputation and market share and try to keep people from running.
Shock Top? Blue Moon? Killian's?
AB and Miller-Coors make plenty of pseudo-craft stuff. They just do a good job of separating it from their big name brands.
That's not craft beer though IMO.
Except they'll probably cut corners in all the wrong places and screw the employees out of every dollar they can, as corporations do.
Maybe. I'm not saying it's a good thing, I'm just pointing out it makes sense for ABI or Coors to buy breweries instead of trying to come up with stuff themselves.

There's a shit load of other good Houston area micro start-ups to choose from as well now. But I'll be damned if I won't miss going straight to the Karbach section of the beer fridge.
I know a few people that work there. I'm guessing they took this news pretty hard as I know how much they hate AB.
Can't hate 'em for taking the money... M&A is my bread and butter, and there's no question, certain assets are more valuable in the hands of owners better positioned to milk their worth. (Karbach will enjoy a quantum leap in distribution and marketing savvy.)
But neither can anyone fault you or me for deciding, meh, it's good beer, but I'd rather support some other locally owned brewer.

[–]ChempyMedical Center 2
Yeah, unfortunately they couldn't stay a small brewery for ever. The only way to grow even larger is to take steps like this. Increased production, larger distribution, and better marketing.
Yep...it boils down to: are you running a lifestyle business OR do you want a value-focused business?
If I had an asset I could sell and retire on? I'd sell it and start a NEW lifestyle business! (LOL)
My guess though? They probably have an earn out clause that keeps the current owners/senior management/skilled employees engaged in the business through bonuses that get paid out over time based on key milestones/metrics. After that? There could even be some non compete elements.
So much fun!!!

I doubt they'd change the existing product. What incentive is there to do that especially if this was a pet project of ABinbev as other posters have said? ABinbev actually owns or has a large share in tons of craft labels... The product won't change it really just depends on how you feel about supporting local vs a big corporation.
While the recipe may not change, you can be sure that the ingredient sources will more than likely change, especially as they push to increase production three fold.
ABinbev wouldn't buy out the brewery if they didn't have plans to scale up operations, which speaking as an industrial chemist, will ultimately change your output by some margin due to changes in suppliers, and even just things related to the necessity of scale. If you're trying to brew larger, you'll either need larger tanks or more tanks, which will influence the kinetics of brewing, and to an extent the microbiology of it all.
There will be some change in the output, and whether or not it is significantly different is entirely up to how much R&D time/money they put into the scale-up operation.

I used love street for my wedding gifts to people staying in hotels. It was a nice gesture of a houston brewery and a beer everyone could get down to, plus it's called love street and has Beatles-esque graphics on the can. How unfortunate they sold out.
I don't know if there was any truth in it, but I heard a couple years ago that Karbach was a secret little project of Anheuser-Busch. Basically that they were already the money behind the whole project. This doesn't surprise me. I do love their beer garden, but haven't been a huge fan of their non special beers.
There is an element of truth to that. Silver Eagle bought Karbach's distribution rights a few years ago for $15 million, far more than they were worth. Karbach used that money to find their massive expansion. It's been pretty clear that that was an investment to improve Karbach before purchase.
... because it would have been illegal for Silver Eagle (one of the largest AB distributors) to outright pay for the expansion. So, a loophole
Right - as far as I understood, Karbach was a quasi-Silver Eagle project to begin with (could be completely wrong, though). So, this to me seems like the successful completion of a five-year plan than a betrayal of principle.
You're not wrong.
As was mentioned above, it was likely a move exploiting a loophole to see how Karbach would perform with increased funding. Their distribution doubled and they turned their humble little brewery into a nice hot spot - more than enough to show InBev-AB that they were a marketable asset.

Really? I love the beer out of the tap, but when it's canned, it seems to lose the flavor they intended for it. It doesn't have the strong coffee taste anymore. I mean, to each their own, of course. Your palette is what it is. But I just can't enjoy it that way.
I've only had it canned, which is probably why.
I too much prefer it from the tap. Tried a can of it and it tasted like a different beer, and one I didn't want a second of.
Why not keep doing both? That way we can both enjoy it on tap and I can also buy some when I'm getting groceries.
It's a personal preference thing. Most of the people I've talked to about Rocket Fuel have preferred tap over can and have said they didn't like the can taste. If you enjoy it, then keep at it. I'd love to see a poll made about it, though. I'd reckon about 70% of people prefer the tap to the can with about 40% saying they'd never drink the cans again(I'd fall in that category).
I understand. I pretty much prefer tap with any beer but it's still nice to be able to take some home without having to drive to a place that does growlers.

This seems like an odd time to sell out. They just hugely expanded their brewing capability, opened the restaurant, and started brewing some exciting new stuff. They quickly solidified themselves as a Houston staple, and now is when they decide to cash out?
All that expansion was done with Silver Eagle money. Wouldn't be surprised if the selling out was an implied part of the deal back then.

businesses rise and fall all the time. better to cash out and take guaranteed profits. running a successful business can be very stressful, especially one with relatively low barriers to entry and fickle consumer tastes.
Those were likely done in order to prepare to be bought out. More power to them, cause they probably got paid a shit ton, like tens of millions of dollars, for their brewery and now have access to endless distribution and raw materials.

Hugely expanding after just 5 years of being open is a steep upward trend which is the perfect time to get in and buy at 100 mil(just a guess) when in a few years it could cost you 200 mil, or be quite the competitor in a local market such as Houston.

There's likely a non-compete clause for a term of 2-5 years on the owners. I doubt they can just turn and burn with a new brewery.
I doubt the owners are in a rush to go and start over at a new brewery after their payday. I can see their brewmaster Eric Warner leaving after a while and doing that cause overall he's probably motivated more by making great beer than money.
non-compete clauses are difficult to enforce, must be a subordinate clause in any agreement. very doubtful that any clause says Karbach owner cannot produce or sell beer.
All I know is that is what happened to the distiller at Balcone's. Now he's doing brandy instead (iirc) which is his way to bypass the non-compete clause.

They always felt like a brewery destined to sell out. They came in with some solid beer, great marketing/art design, and what had to be some solid financial backing. They built a market base and grew exponentially. I've got to believe that they owners had a plan to sell out in the first 10 years, and it appears they were able to capitalize even faster than that. If I was a venture capitalist, I'd try to get in on the ground floor of whatever endeavor they take on next.

Oh joy. Another small company getting gobbled by a crap company, who will put it into their stream and lineup and use their marketing/distribution/etc power to push real independents out of the lineup at restaurants and bars.
Damn.

I lived up in Indiana before Goose Island was overtaken. There appeared to be a marked decrease the quality of that beer after they were acquired. I remember 312 was my favorite beer in college, and relatively rare outside the midwest. I still drink Good Island on occasion, but prefer local brewers like 8th wonder or st Arnold.
I would somewhat disagree with you. I think the GI sellout was one of the few sellouts that were actually GOOD for the brewery. I've had Sofie and a few others post-sellout and they were all excellent. Plus, I can buy Sofie and some of their other better beers at a good price here in TX whenever I want.
Yeah, my opinion is subjective for sure. I just remember the beer tasting better and less mass-produced before being acquired. But I'm sure my tastebuds are different 10 years later.
Highly possible. I'm only a big fan of some of their beers and those are the ones that are still great to me. I will say that it's nice to be able to get BC when it comes out too (last year's production problems aside).

The beer won't change, it'll be just as delicious as always, however what does change is who you give your money to. When you buy karbach you'll now be giving your money to ABInBev who lobbies against the small craft brewery and tries to muscle them out.
Did you not hear about all those infected goose island bottles last year? If you think the quality of goose islands beer hasn't changed then you weren't paying attention.
Lots of people prefer local businesses, so ANY buyout would be unwelcome here. That's a legitimate position.
An even MORE compelling position, though, is that you may not want to support the anticompetitive and unethical chicanery that AB-InBev routinely engages in. Buying a Karbach beer means giving money to ABI.
I won't do that.
One thing I noticed about Goose Island is they were a pioneer in beer making. The day they sold, that just seemed to stop. I don't follow them that closely but I've been seeing the same beers they have always sold, nothing new. Maybe a few additional sours for $30.

If you made that deal you wouldn't have to give a damn about what people think about you while you're sipping margaritas on the beach in front of your condo in Cabo or seeing the world with your s/o or doing literally whatever the hell you want to do. I get the reaction from consumers. Hell, I'm with everyone else in this thread, but if you threw that kind of money at me you'd best believe I'm taking it and you'd never see me again. I get your point, though.

Oh yeah, and I don't disagree with you, I'm not sure I'd honestly give a shit about any criticism either if I took that deal. I'm mostly just saying though that while its understandable, and while many of us would possibly do the same under the same circumstances, it certainly doesn't make it free from criticism. Understandable for sure, but still shitty from a consumer standpoint for multiple reasons

Most people don't understand how business works and want to cry foul in this case because the product was built on an air of "by the little guy" and this violates that impression. I don't personally give a fuck. They built a monster business from nothing based solely on a quality product made in America. How many people can say that? Just happy for the guys, enjoy your next business or your retirement.

IDK, I heard that one of their employees had an accident on the job. He was known to be a recreational user of certain herbal intoxicators, but never under the influence on the job. The workman's comp insurer was going to mandate that he take a drug test, otherwise they wouldn't pay the claim. When the owners said that they wouldn't make him take a test, the insurer said that the company would have to fire him then because they wouldn't insure him. The owners basically told the insurer to piss up a tree, paid for the claim out of their pocket, and switched insurers. He was too valuable of an employee and they knew whatever test he would fail had nothing to do with the on-the-job accident. That's pretty chill in my book. (I was told this story 3rd hand, so the details may be a bit off, but the gist is accurate).
A place that big searching for a new insurer would have that potential new insurer doing due diligence, and they would find the claim and the experience with the last insurer. Thus the new rates, if they could get insured at all after that problem, would be very high.

They're not going to be able to afford or even source most of their high-quality ingredients in enough quantity to sell at a competitive price for national distribution; a lot of their stuff was sourced from little mom-and-pop farms. The quality of their beers will decline significantly. Karbach is dead to me.

Not too surprised here. Karbach is pretty much at capacity with right around 80 thousand barrels a year and not much more room to keep expanding. In order for the brand to continue it's growth this needed to happen, but it doesn't make it hurt any less. If Eric Warner stays on as brewmaster I wouldn't worry about the quality but if he jumps ship then I'll start burning churches.
