In a prior arrest he: "Greene, who lived in the apartments, called the man the N-word and told the man “I will kill you, (expletive) kill you,”"
Classy.

Apparently this guy has (had) a YouTube channel where he's shown in conflict with police. And then he posted THIS in the comments.
i was offended by the blacks sitting through our anthem. Thousands more whites fought and died for their freedom. However this is not about the Armed forces, they are cop haters.
What the hell.

I'm so confused. He was upset that black people were protesting cops....so he killed some cops?
The general line of thought seems to be "The government is screwing white people over to profit minorities, and yet the minorities are still so fucking spoiled they protest." Lets them hate both the government and the minorities and blame them both.

Hopes to participate in a race war, by helping to start one. Same as Charles Manson, Dylann Roof (church killings) etc. I've been related by marriage to someone of this ilk. He started out being a survivalist because of the Soviet Union threat-he was certain nuclear war was imminent so he stocked up on peanut butter and gas masks and within a year of the wall coming down, he switched to full white supremacist, where he'd only been a mere hateful racist before this. Now they apparently seem to like the Russians.

Offended by blacks sitting during the national Anthem so he flies a Confederate flag.
Yep, makes sense.

Nothing shows that you love the USA more than flying the Traitors' Flag.
Yeah, I so don't get that. I'm not American but holy mackerel, why would people really want to have that flag be a point of pride for them? Especially because these are usually the same type who would happily tell indigenous people to accept the fact they "lost" when they were colonized and to get over it.
You know how Germany acknowledged their wrongs and extensively drive that point home in their education? Americans never really got that for their treatment of native Americans and the south didnt really get that for slavery
I would say you're incorrect.
You're assuming that the people who hate natives and the people who hate blacks are different. They are not.
The south has had a long history of not only ignoring what they did, but actively playing the victim where they were on the side of good during the civil war.
This idea, coming from people of power/authority, has poisoned the minds of many people. And it gives racists a stronger point of contention.
I'm from Virginia, so let me try to give a little insight.
The south doesn't actually look at themselves as traitors. Point in fact, the 'south' has never considered itself un-American. The fight was about state's rights versus federal, hinged on the issue of slavery that had been ongoing for decades, if not a century or more.
This has evolved overtime into the south being regarded as the upholders of true American ideas and freedoms- for this reason the confederate flag, at least in my state, was often flown.
It is of course more complex. If you jump over to West Virginia it's very odd- many there actually have a more south supporting mentality than even here, where you can see confederate flags on the lawn of every house. It's very weird going to a northern state and they have a stronger confederate spirit than even those in your own state- which was the capitol of the Confederacy.
For the record the south definitely lost the war- but that spirit did not die, it only dug itself in deeper.
However I would say it is no longer mainly racially motivated. It's something else now. My grandma came from old money in the south from the Rankin family, and her family was very active with the underground railroad and civil rights movement. Family home was apparently one of the waypoints on it. Yet they also fought for the confederates.

"But muh heritage!"

Try http://bittersoutherner.com - it's in the best literary, cultural tradition of the south, without the racism and willful ignorance.
If you are a person who buys the states’ rights argument … or you fly the rebel flag in your front yard … or you still think women look really nice in hoop skirts, we politely suggest you find other amusements on the web. The Bitter Southerner is not for you. The Bitter Southerner is for the rest of us. It is about the South that the rest of us know: the one we live in today and the one we hope to create in the future. ... a South that is full of people who do things that honor genuinely honorable traditions. Drinking. Cooking. Reading. Writing. Singing. Playing. Making things. It's also full of people who face our region's contradictions and are determined to throw our dishonorable traditions out the window. The Bitter Southerner is here for Southern people who do cool things, smart things, things that change the whole world, or just a few minds at a time. The world knows too little about these people, which is, alas, another reason to be bitter. But it prompted us to create The Bitter Southerner™.

As a bitter Southerner myself, this site is really neat. Thanks for sharing this link, otherwise I might have missed it.
I say I'm Southern, but I'm really Appalachian (slight distinction of the two). However, I take pride in being both. I'm fortunate to travel the country and share a bit of the modern Southern/Appalachian culture with others for a living.
It really burns my biscuit for folks to think that we are all ignorant, racist, and religious freaks. It's 2016, not 1865. The true ignorance falls on those being prejudiced towards a culture I doubt they have ever encountered, much less examined the nuances of such.

That's exactly it. There is a part of society that have really been getting fucked for the last few decades. They are pissed, but don't have the time/energy/brain capacity to unpack the complexities of everything that acted together to do this to them. So they pick one thing to either hate or mindlessly rally behind because it's simple and reality has become very complicated; whites, blacks, NAFTA, the Chinese, immigrants, the President, Trump, Hillary, racism, sexism, PC culture, whatever man.
I want to say the Internet probably had a notable influence here. If you're old enough to remember life without it, the most advanced forms of communication available to the masses were phones (and radios for people who like radios). Now you've got anybody with a crazy idea able to disseminate it to a comparatively huge audience of morons, a good number of which are probably angry.
Imagine if you wanted to do the same thing years ago. You'd have to call all the morons individually to tell them how HAARP is summoning Nibiru.
While it is about communicating, it's more than that. It's about creating communities. And while we normally think of that phrase in the positive sense, it's not always so.
I remember when the World Wide Web first came into existence, and I found a forum dedicated to my favorite college football team. I'm someone who felt like a weirdo even when I was going to school there because of how passionate I was about the team. It felt like a revelation to be in a community of people who felt just like me. It felt empowering, and while it was okay being an outlier in all kinds of settings (including going to high school in another state a few miles away from the rival), it was nice to finally find a place where I was "among my people." My best friends in life and highly successful business partners ended up developing from those interactions. It was a powerful experience for all of us.
But this is true for nearly any interest you can name. Pedophiles who have to hide their inclinations can find communities of like minded people. Racists can find others who believe skin color determines aspects of who we are. Religious fanatics who feel violence and repression is an appropriate manifestation of their beliefs.
I would like to believe that the Internet gives us tools to communicate across boundaries, but my personal experience, in a vast array of public forums, is that the most strident voices drive discussion.
Think of a crowded room where a group of people are having a civil discussion about a polarizing topic. If there's no limitation or heavy moderation regarding who can speak and in what manner, eventually someone with the loudest voice tramples all over the conversation, and everyone ends up reacting to that. Then the person's behavior is rewarded in different ways by gaining the attention he/she sought, so others begin emulating it.
And it's effective. The most extreme positions transmitted the loudest end up driving the conversation.
When I've been effective at combatting it, it's been so exhausting. It just takes a huge amount of personal resources - time, patience, persistence, quick responses, an articulate and accurate presentation of views - and the battle is never won.
I think the state of the country is a manifestation of this in many ways. But it's not just the Internet. Politically it's the shift from boll weevil conservative southern democrats to solid republicans, along with the gerrymandering to make appealing to a party's base all that matters.
The only thing that's truly going to change all this is the country going through a catastrophe. 9-11 wasn't enough, and neither was the financial collapse of 2008. So it will have to be something much worse than either of those two events. And speaking personally, I'd actually prefer to kick the can down the road until after I'm dead I don't want to live through a Great Depression, a civil war, or WWII.
Also... people are finding things to be angry about, that they were unaware of before...
Exactly. Or even things that don't really exist, or exist to a degree far lesser than advertised.
And there's partisan news outlets, which want you to focus that anger on specific people (formerly known as "your fellow citizens").
Or, you know, go on TV about it. Or publish a book... or scream it at people on the streets and way a few decades for it to disseminate.
If anything the net just made it easier for us to see the results. And maybe increased the overall diversity of crazy ideas people use to direct their anger, but humanity has always been like this.
On one hand I want to say he's mentally ill, but on the other hand, I think you're right. People are just so disenfranchised and angry and confused. Edit: http://www.kcci.com/article/breaking-two-officers-shot-overnight/8089441
Edit: KCCI just showed video of a Dallas County ambulance arriving at a Des Moines hospital with Greene. Person (assumed to be Greene) was taken from the ambulance on a stretcher hooked to an i.v. and strapped down.

According to that article and a quote:
“It doesn’t look like there was any interaction between these officers and whoever the coward is who shot them while they sat in their cars,” said Parizek.
I wonder if there was an incident earlier in the evening between SMG and the officers. They seemed to zoom in on him as the suspect pretty quickly. Even the incident from two weeks ago at the football game wouldn't have given them enough to focus on this guy. There had to have been something that happened within the last 24-48 hours.
EDIT: Unless someone saw his truck and license plates. I forget people are up at all hours of the night. Plus it was on the street outside the high school so maybe there was surveillance video.

I honestly believe police stations intentionally take bad pictures of you.
They either don't tell you when they're taking the picture, or say "we're detaining you for month" right before. There's a couple good mugshots out there but the vast majority are awful. Even for people arrested for minor things like trespassing and know they'll be okay. It's in the stations best interest for mugshots to be awful so they can point to the photo in the court room and say "This is what they looked like when we caught them, do they look innocent to you?"

When a person of color does it, then they are a perfect ambassador for their entire race. When a white person does it, it's because they're the victim of some force of nature. By this measure, any white person will be exonerated because obviously they would not do something like this were it not for some mental affliction.
This type of thinking also infects every type of situation. And it also doesn't apply in reverse. A black person doing something positive doesn't get to represent his race. Dr. Neil Tyson is just a cool smart person but the guy that painted himself to look like a white girl makes a comment about invading "poc safe spaces"and one of the top comments is "do they want to go back to segregation?"
Why does the positive black person get to be an individual but the black person that does something negative speaks for the collective?

sadly this thinking pervades every culture. People understand "their own" better and feel qualified to make nuanced decisions about the actions of people that they feel like they understand...people who aren't them are foreign and unpredictable. They are a monolith. They are scary. You see it everywhere and in every culture there will be a subgroup that views themselves superior to every other group of people and will make endless excuses for "their own" while viciously demonizing anybody that doesn't look like them.
It is horrible but it is also very human.

2nd: Where the hell do people have the time and energy to this stuff? Seriously. It's all I can do to shower in the morning, feed myself, my kid, & my pets, go to work in an office all day, drive home, make dinner, help with homework, play with my dog outside, pooper scoop the yard, do laundry, fuss at my kid to shower, get the kid to bed, & finally get some sleep myself so I can do it all again the next day. On top of regular day to day stuff, there's yard work to be done, grocery shopping, bills to pay, dishes to wash, doctors appointments, vet appointments, litter boxes to scoop, more frickin laundry, vacuuming, etc. Then on top of that, there are books to read, walks to take, movies to see, podcasts to listen to, family to visit, friends to catch up with, margaritas, projects to try, and naps! Who has the time to do this shit? Really?
Iowan here, Des Moines resident. The guy was caught near where one of my servicemen was working. Apparently he had a loooong history of mental instability and cop hating behavior prior to this.
This really fucks me up. It's not like there is this simmering undertone of conflict with cops and the public here. Even in the bad area around Drake (where I used to live), there isn't a lot of blank-on-cop or cop-on-blank violence, mostly due to a really good chief of police and the Polk County AG John Sarcone working together to be more community oriented. This is really hitting everyone in the city hard, regardless of demographic, and there's this big outpouring of support.
I mean, I never thought I'd see some shit like this in Des Moines, ever. The system is doing shit right here, in terms of respect and cooperation. We don't have crazy no-knock raids on the wrong houses, or shootings of fleeing suspects, or suspects 'resisting' while they're on the ground, or any of that shit. It just really hurts.
