Against the smaller teams at home, yes. Against the top teams, no. Too risky.

Man City used 4-4-2 to steamroller smaller teams last season, but then got found out against decent opponents.

Now you can play a kind of 4-4-2 these days if one of the strikers works his ass off helping the midfield when we lose the ball (like Leicester). But presumably we'd be playing Ibra and Rashford up front and Ibra is not going to do the work. Whilst if Rashford is a striker then he needs to be right on the last defender to stretch the defence and make use of his pace.

So I'd like to Rashford and Ibra start up front sometime against a weaker side, but Mata is playing so well right now I don't think he deserves to be dropped.

Fergie always used to do this. 442 against the weaker teams. 451/433 against the title contenders and in Europe.

I would only switch to a 442 when the team is in form. Right now it's a little too risky.
