New Device watching over Alzheimer's and Dementia patients at night for use by relatives or professional carers
About this project
Alzheimer's Disease
Alzheimer's disease is a disease of the brain. The greatest risk factor for the development of Alzheimer's disease is age. The illness includes memory and orientation disorders, speech disorders, disorders of the ability to think and judge, as well as changes in personality. Alzheimer's patients are increasingly dependent on help and support. The respective requirements for care, therapy and medical treatment are a huge burden for all those who care for Alzheimer's. Many millions of people have Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias.
As the size and proportion of the world's population age 65 and older continue to increase, the number of persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias will grow.
My Background
My name is Ulf Glattkowski. You will find me on the Internet at www.glattkowski.info and also at www.art1010.de. I am professional developer of "business concepts without competition".
My Invention for Carers of Alzheimer's Patients and Dementia Sufferers in Private Homes, Retirement Homes or Hospitals
I have created the Eagle Eye alarm device for carers of Alzheimer's and Dementia persons at their home, at a retirement home or hospital. The device alerts immediately when Alzheimer patients or a demented person - as very often happens - leave their beds at night and stray somewhere through the building, a garden or even roads outdoors.
Apart from the high probability of strayers hurting themselsves or even getting killed, it is bad PR for the respective retirement home or hospital.
The Eagle Eye System consists of one or more sensors and a hand held receiver, all battery operated and completely mobile.
The number of sensors depends on the number of Alzheimer's and Dementia Patients to be monitored. The purpose of the sensor is to send an alarm to the receiver whenever such patients leave their bed. The Alzheimer's or Dementia patients are in the majority helpless and need - when leaving their beds - attention from the guarding relative or the home's night staff.
It is not uncommon for the police to be called when a patient has escaped the building and does not know the way back, as often is the case.
The Eagle Eye sensor sends an alarm over up to 2 kilometers in line of sight . We tested the device in a retirement home with thick walls made of concrete. The alarm from the 5th floor reached the reception in the office on the ground floor without problems.
The mobile receiver of the sysstem can simultaneously control up to 20 Eagle Eye units. A table top unit monitor for up to 40 units will also beavailable. These systems result in a considerable relief for everyone caring for Alzheimer's or demented patients.
The receivers have different sizes and funktions:
- the standard portable receiver for up to 20 EAGLE EYE sensors
- a desk unit for up to 40 units EAGLE EYE
- a self-dialling phone unit calling a number when an alert comes in.
The EAGLE EYE works quietly, no sound, no light.
Opedrating the Eagle Eye is extremely easy and just needs a few minutes of instruction. The unit is watertight and without external cables. The transmission distance is up to 2 km at line of sight. The batteries last up to one year.
The Mobility
The EAGLE EYE sensor can be placed according to the desired effetc.
If Eagle Eye is wanted to send an alert when a patient leaves the bed, the sensor will be placed accordingly. In case of an alarm, the receiver will beep and display a code of the location of the warning, so the person rushing to help will know where to go or which room to go to.
If an alert is wantend only when the person enters the toilet, the sensor will be placed at the door of the toilet.
A different alarm will also be sent, when the person enters a toilet but does noch leave it for a set period of time. Also this is a reason for somebody to go and check.
In many countries, this system will be the only one without the legally forbidden constraints on Alzheimer's or demented patients' bodies.
Other Uses of the System
The EAGLE EYE offers many other uses:
- intrusion control for any room with valuable content in shops, studios etc.
As the EAGLE EYE sensor has a transmission range of about 2 kilometers in line of sight, it can monitor intrusion attempts at buildings at farms, plantations, yachts, marinas, warehouses, office buildings, airports, shipyards, exhibitions, camps, privat residences and many more.
There are other uses which I have not explored to the full yet, here are just some examples:
- animal photographers, campers will be warned of approaching wild game when putting a couple of EAGLE EYE around their location.
- a marina operator already plans to offer boat owners a special service with an EAGLE EYE placed on or inside client's boats at an extra fee during the night..
- A hunter alredy wants a set with 2 EAGLE EYE sensors to be alarmed of approchaching game on trails.
Not difficult to put up
Just place the EAGLE EYE sensor in the wanted location and switch the receiver on. An incoming alarm will can be heard as a beep-beep either through the mobile unit's loudspeaker or alternatively by earplug.
The receiver will display a code of the location of the warning.
No cables to be laid, no holes to be drilled in walls, no bodily constraints of the patients. The EAGLE EYE just sits there and does it's work quietly.
Working prototypes of the EAGLE EYE sensor and receiver are available and can also seen in the following video.
What I am looking for:
Having tested the units extensively since 2011, for the next step of the EAGLE EYE System, funds are needed for professional designers to come up with a pleasing shape of the sensor, the pocket receiver and the desk-top unit. Also production must be arranged plus marketing partners selected around the world.
Money is the most important driver of the further development of this project to make lifes a great deal more agreeable for carers of Alzheimer's and demented persons.
Risks and challenges
The tests:
I have tested the units in 36 different retirement homes in Germany, most managers wanted to buy a set immediately. I also showed it at a high security home for dementia with positive results.
Lastly, I had loaned a prototype set for two months to a company specialising in supplies for retirement homes. Their sales person had only positive comments to report from the homes' managers.
Apart from its performance, the EAGLE EYE is also gaining ground by the fact that numbers of Alzheimer's patients and demented persons unfortunately increase steadily, whilst the cost of attending staff in homes rises, resulting in fewer and fewer staff at night and more need for supporting technical means.
The risk:
It will be advisable in retirement homes and hospitals to collect or hide the EAGLE EYE sensors every morning as they may end up in somebody's pocket due to their small size.
The legality:
The EAGLE EYE uses legal radio frequencies.
