We didn't need a holding midfielder today, judging by our performance and the number of chances created. They got forward quite a bit, we just had to score. And Herrera wasn't fatigued. Both cards were soft IMO, he slipped into the player for both.

Well we also played Burnley, we might need one against a stronger opposition.

Sure, but you were talking in the context of this match

I'm not the OP and I see the edit in the post now, sorry.

Ah, didn't notice. No worries then

yeah sorry about that, i really need to to proof read my titles since you can't edit them

fair point, i was in sheer disbelief we didn't at least get one, so unfair that Herrera got sent off, we still dominate the game after he went off though

I really don't think he should replace any of our current midfield 3 but it blows my mind that Pogba would probably be the one we'd miss the least out of him, Mata and Herrera if we absolutely had to play Schneiderlin.

yeah i agree with Mata and Herrera, especially Mata who dominated the game today, but if we look at the Chelsea, if we had schneiderlin it would of probably stopped the 3rd and 4th goals

It depends on the opposition. If we are playing another top club that likes to control possession, then playing him with Herrera would allow us to set up a counter. Against the likes of Burnley where we dominate the ball he isn't very useful

yeah given how we dominated play even after he got sent is proof of that

So who would you take off? I can't get my head around a central midfield containing Schneiderlin, Herrera Pogba and Mata. Unless your suggesting playing 4-3-3 with Mata on the wing, which I would argue against. Him as a 10 is one of the things, that's working for us at the moment.

To summarize. I think playing Schneiderlin would make us more defensive.

4-1-2-1-2 (aka 4-4-2 diamond).

Schneiderlin/Carrick (CDM), Pogba (LCM), Herrera (RCM), Mata/Mikhitaryan (CAM). In other words, we don't need to take off anyone from our current midfield if not for rotation purposes.

No team has ever had top end success in the PL without wingers

[–]columbianflake[S] 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

if you look at Barcelona for example they get a lot of success with using wingers most of the time, bit of a poor example since they are in La Liga, but still

Do you want to play our current team according to our current strengths? Yes or no?

Our strength is that we have depth in central midfield. Our weakness is that we don't have NATURAL TALENTED wingers to do the job.

i did suggest the other day to swap around Pogba and Mata to get the best out of Mata and put Herrera in his best position, but i was dismissed as crazy and outlandish for my very different suggestion

For me, it is obvious that we always look better with a center midfielder who is assigned to sit in front of the Ds and allow Pogba/Herrera to move forward. If Carrick doesn't play, then Schneiderlin has to play. Furthermore, Pogba and Schneiderlin surely have to know how to compensate for each other's weaknesses since they train together for both club and country.

Furthermore, I strongly believe that our short-term future has to go through a 4-1-2-1-2 formation considering that we don't have natural talented wingers (our current wingers either are natural strikers or natural CAMs in normal time). Since we have good specialists in all positions in central midfield, it's time we use that particular depth for a change.

Terrible idea. You need width to win football matches. No team has ever had real success in the PL without wingers

Might work well on fm or FIFA but in real football width and wingers is an integral part of scoring goals.

If you want to ditch the idea until we tried it for real, that's up to you. But let me tell you this: if you're satisfied with us playing the likes of Lingard and Memphis offering fuck all of an end product, I suggest you start questioning yourself when looking for solutions.
