There are very few categories and some of the stories fit both in Non-Political as well as some other category. And can we do away with dead flairs like Net-neutrality since it's no longer in the news.
Why don't we experiment with interesting and diverse set of flairs?
Would love to hear community's thoughts.

So we already introduced two flairs two weeks ago - Business & Finance, and Entertainment. We merged Economy with Policy. What do you guys think can be done to add to these flairs?

My personal take (not as a mod), others can chime in.
  • Food & Health: Health related topics moves out of non-pol and clubbed together since its related to lifestyle/food.
  • Geopolitics & Defence: only India related, domestic pol threads goes under politics tag
  • <suggest tag>: topics related to internet plans, jio, internet privacy, NN, etc. Net Neutrality flair can be phased out since its irrelevant.
  • Science & Environment: actual science related stuff and not random flipart, amazon stories, environment related moves out of non-pol. I would love to have this.
  • Technology & Startups: may overlap business and science flairs. optional I guess
  • Law & Policy (excludes local crime stories) Actual law and policy decisions excluding financial ones.
  • Business & Economy/Finance: co-orelated topics can go together
  • Sports & Entertainment

if you think it will be political, then why not just restrict the use of the 'history' flair to all posts before 1947.
I also don't see how a flair can be 'mis-used'. A flair is just a flair.

Technology should be kept completely different from startups. I like reading about ideas but hate reading about which chutiya.com was valued at 15000 Cr. by which eccentric soylent bar eating VC.

Sport and Entertainment should be seperate imo, since Sport is such a huge topic in of itself.
I'd also add a Culture tag. Maybe you want to share something about a novel or just an essay about society. We need a culture tag. We need lots of tags.
I'd add an Education tag as well. Whether it is about higher education or about the latest primary school policy articles/Op-Eds, it is a big topic that deserves its recognition as a stand-alone topic.

I think education is a minuscule topic that isn't discussion very often on India and doesn't warrant its own flair (for now). It can go under "Policy" or "Political". I'm not sure what would be under a "Culture" flair. Can you elaborate on this?

Culture: let's say there is an Op-Ed about gender relations. That could be culture. Let's say there's an article about caste discrimination. That's culture. Let's say there's a news story about LGBTQ acceptance in India - that's also culture. Even Chetan Bhagat is, in a sense, culture(although low-brow).
All of what I said could also be classified as political questions, but you can say the same thing for everything in the world since politics is about everything. But problem with political tag is that people's tribalism get the better out of them. A culture/society tag would disfuse such an instinct and let people talk honestly and openly about cultural matters in India, whether positive or negative, low- or highbrow.

There's an entertainment flair. You could repurpose that to use for jokes, satire, memes as well as non-political YT videos, cartoons, comics etc.

I've shared this with mods before too. We need lots of flairs. Food, Culture, History, TIL, etc etc. It helps in curating content and also encourages others to share. It helps people find what they need too.

    If something fits in NP and other categories, the other category takes precedence.
    NP is a catch all category for anything else which isn't political news.
    Both P and NP were introduced when a lot of people were complaining that this sub is overrun by politics (and its true, frankly its gotten a lot worse), so mods introduced these flairs so that users can filter out political stuff. Everything else was introduced later.

    This needs to happen , this sub reminds me of a consolidated news app mostly nowadays. I don't wants to read news and then read it again in Reddit , how about y'all create a sub for indiapolitics and post news articles there

    It helps guys who use filters. I filter out [P] because I'm not interested in it. It also helps people categorize posts. If you want to see only AskIndia type posts, then you can click on the flair and it'll show you all the AskIndia type posts from that day.
    So I don't think removing flairs altogether would be advisable.

I feel there are far too many things happening that are India-related that cannot really be grouped into one of the 8 categories. Another reason I feel the tags should go is because I frequently see new users making posts only to have their posts removed because they don't know about the tagging rule here.

    What about user flair, I've to use Antarctica. User should be able to decide what they want or there should be monthly flair submission thread where most upvoted one will be included in the list.
