I think it'll vary between cultures and has little to do with hypergamy across the board, but how hypergamy channels itself.

I think women, subconsciously, hate every institution that prohibits them from doing whatever they sexually desire.

That's why they hate all marriage--monogamous, polygamous, or otherwise--because it tells them "you can't have that," even if they want it.

But depending on where she is, she hates different sorts of arrangements. In a monogamous society, she hates monogamous marriage because it doesn't allow her to "trade up" so easily.

In polygamous societies, she has a different problem: the man who has her in a harem is always, himself, "trading in" his old wives for new ones. So she thinks she would have it better under monogamy.

You may think that "polyamourous" or "polyandrous" marriages would be her ideal, but I don't think that sort of arrangement would suit her either in the long run. Why? She has to care about her husbands, especially the one or ones she doesn't like to screw as much and as often.

I mean, look at all the nasty condescension women give to their NiceGuys the moment the NiceGuys get needy or left out. Look at all the stalking and harassment laws they wanted, just so they can weasel out of the emotional obligations they cultivate whenever it suits them.

Now imagine they couldn't just turn the beta orbiters and NiceGuys into the police for stalking and harassment, as they are married to them, giving these nu-males a right to their spouse's time. Imagine, also, the problems women cause men now in divorce, problems like delaying the divorce needlessly, showing how the "neglect" adversely affected the marriage, taking assets far out of proportion to the contribution.

Now imagine that, instead of men, women in polyandrous marriages suffered these problems when the neglected man wants to take it out on her (and her "favorite" husband).

That's why, I think, women cannot ever like marriage, no matter the arrangement. Sure, they like their husbands to be married to them, but they just don't like the obligations any marriage puts onto them.
