Hahahahahahahahaahahaha

I especially love the "there's way easier targets all around us!" part. The fact that you were even near someone who seemed off and then proceeded to have an odd convo w him shows you were the weakest ones there.

They were obviously on the Granville stop, which I took over a hundred times. Some weirdos are there on occasion and keeping away from them and not giving them attention means they don't fuck w you like that.

Not to mention a Loyola campus safety office is literally right next to the stop if they really felt threatened. Or, ya know, not confront the dude when you're in a subway and wait for him to leave or until the cops come.

Putting aside the whole "moving to Chicago to flip houses without seemingly ever having set foot in the city" thing, I thought I would compile a brief list of mistakes that this couple made:

  1. Going to the L wearing their "rich white kids" uniform (and probably loudly narrating the entire experience as they're slumming it on the public train rather than taking their car).
  2. Engaging in conversation with a crackhead.
  3. Leaving the platform.
  4. Continuing to engage the crackhead.
  5. Going to Subway instead of Chipotle.
  6. Instead of waiting in the Subway for the guy to leave or the cops to come (since you called 911), going out and CONTINUING TO ENGAGE THE CRACKHEAD.
  7. Jumping into some random person's car(?)
  8. Breaking your lease at this place.
  9. Breaking another lease at an even more expensive place.
  10. Letting one escalated encounter with a crackhead become a "sing from God" that you shouldn't live in Chicago.

I should say that I moved to Chicago as a white kid from Alabama, having never lived in a city with more than 65,000 people, when I was 21. This is more than just a couple of young white kids who have never lived in a real city before. These are kids who have probably never interacted with someone who makes less than 200K a year.

Going to the L wearing their "rich white kids" uniform (and probably loudly narrating the entire experience as they're slumming it on the public train rather than taking their car).

I largely agree with everything you said, but the red line at Granville is hardly poor-person-town. CTA trains in Chicago are routinely full of people in "rich white kid" uniforms. People take trains to get to the opera.

People who live in Chicago routinely take transit whenever it's convenient even when they own cars. Being able to do this is one of the best things about living in Chicago! I'm not "slumming it" when I take the L somewhere. More likely I'm "not being stuck in traffic and paying outrageous rates for parking".

[–]itslenny 16ポイント17ポイント  (0子コメント)

Maybe you're not "slumming it" when you take the CTA, but this couple totally was. He wanted to have the "Chicago public transit experience" and he sure did.

Adding: 11. Getting married so young (at 17 and 18 I think).

I'm so different now at 26 than I was at 18 and this is the time many of my age-mates are STARTING to get engaged and married. It seems so foolish to commit to forever so young... Seems born of a being devoutly Christian while having a strong desire to have sex. But I dunno, I could be wrong. They do seem in love... They also seem so naïve and syrupy sweet that on the one hand, it's gross, but on the other hand, it's kinda sorta endearing and I'm kinda sorta rooting for them. But damn... married before you're even legal drinking age??? Godspeed to them.

Seriously. They have this big plan to move to Edgewater/Rogers park. Then the loop and start a real estate business. All that changes BC some crazy crack head homeless guy follows them and they move back home? Im sure everyone on this sub suburb or city at some point while in Chicago has dealt with a crazy honkers person yelling at them. Ignore them and move on. You are planning on moving out as barely an adult. Learn to do things yourself.

    [–]hobbituaryRavenswood 111ポイント112ポイント  (10子コメント)

I think the truly traumatic experience for them, which they must have blocked from their memory because it was so bad, was that they went with Subway instead Chipotle.

I remember when I was younger, I was with a youth group that traveled there staying at a hostel. A fed up, drunken nurse ended up hitting my group's church van later pulling a knife and gave us the stink eye until we left the parking area. First taste of the city at night.

Now how did we know this complete stranger was a nurse? CPD found her dropped ID outside.

The mistake was engaging. Literally from the beginning. I hate to be that guy but they don't seem cynical enough, and I am assuming that has to do with a lack of perspective. You're living in a major city.... You should be cautious in dealing with any stranger, and if the guy seems "real weird and off" don't stand there and engage, ignore him!! Odds are the guy had several screws lose and when you gave him the time of day it clearly provoked something in him. I can't begin to count the number of times I've ignored crazies!! They are used to being dismissed in the crowds of people, that's the response you should give.

In reality, I probably wouldn't be that rude (I'm a Chicagoan, after all--not a New Yorker). I might, however, fuck with somebody for getting up in my business by saying something goofy like, "They call me Truckstop, Destroyer of Toilets."

    [–]Preptaurian 10ポイント11ポイント  (0子コメント)

Am now a New Yorker originally from Chicago. I think the responses would have gone something like:

Chicago: "What's your name?" "Not the one."

New Yorker: Cracky would never have a chance to ask, because a New Yorker would have surveyed the scene upon entry, spotted Cracky and other potential crazies, is "listening" to headphones even if phone is dead, does not engage or make eye contact but always knows where Cracky and friends are.

    [–]bardbrain 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

See, I'm imagining now that these guys start off just looking SLIGHTLY off but end up gaslighted into going crazier by all the people telling them weird stuff.

Like, this SLIGHTLY weird, naive guy with a bad haircut and natural BO tries to strike up a conversation on the train and people start telling him that they're God or that they're with the CIA and the guy eventually flips out from all the people messing with him to get away from him.

    [–]mrbooze 14ポイント15ポイント  (1子コメント)

I can't begin to count the number of times I've ignored crazies!!

It's almost literally what living in a moderately big city teaches you. If I stopped to engage everyone that wanted to get my attention on my walk to work every morning, I'd never get to work.

    [–]ostiariusEdgewater 19ポイント20ポイント  (3子コメント)

    [–]ChiDnDPlz 73ポイント74ポイント  (2子コメント)

As a comparison, just this week my younger brother had a drunk walk into his apartment in the middle of the night and refuse to leave. My brother was eventually able to talk the guy out of the apartment while his girlfriend was calling the cops.

His response was to call his landlord and get a new lock (the old one was half broken which is why the guy was able to freely walk in) and tell the story a dozen times over the weekend. He didn't immediately move out and have our parents drive several hours to help him manage his life.

What happened to these people was shitty, but they have zero perspective, resilience, or problem solving skills and made a video in which they basically revel in that short coming. They could have easily made a decent video about how they had a crazy first night in chicago but ultimately came out fine and a little wiser- but maybe that's why they have 800k views and I don't

    EDIT: WAIT WATCH THIS

Holy shit. He responded to some comments and his profile description is solid gold. I redacted some stuff because I'm not trying to witch hunt/dox.

My name is Jaelin LASTNAME, and I am an 18 year old entrepreneur out of LOCATION. All of my life, I've felt obliged to live life as the past generations have. Go to school, get good grades, find a secure job as a doctor, and bask in my then guaranteed riches. It's too bad that system just isn't working anymore, and individuals are having to find a brand new outlet for fulfillment of the heart and wealth creation.

With this newfound realization that I had to do things differently, I joined the industry of Network Marketing. Initially, I had no desire for igniting change in the individuals I came across. Every new face I met and pulled into my organization was simply a dollar sign that brought me a paycheck at the end of the month. I carried on like this for 6 months with no idea as to what Network Marketing truly was supposed to represent.

Then came Vipassana- one of the most enlightening opportunities I've found to this day. It is our personal mission to ignite change and to bring out the genuinely giving nature that is inherent in every human being. We have created the worlds first fully immersive virtual reality game wholly focusing on self-development.

Vipassana attracts improvement in the four pillars of life- The Mental, Social, Physical, and Financial. It is our personal goal to bring clarity and wholeness into each of our own lives and transfer that to every new individual we come across.

Yup. You ignore him and walk away.

Still following you? Go to the CTA employee downstairs and they will either make sure that guy leaves or calls the cops on him and they have a higher priority since it's a fellow city employee.

Yeah, well, they didn't fucking know that. There are sheltered kids just out of high school.

Kind of like all the other Loyola freshman who don't quit the city after one day?

And again, I don't fault them for being sheltered and naive. I fault them for being self involved and arrogant.

I mean seriously, the video title says they are "homeless" now. Most teenagers are little shits (I definitely was) if no one puts them in their place they will stay that way forever.

        [–]a_REALHumanNear North Side 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

I'd like to say that staying in the Subway until the police arrive (or the guy takes off) is just common sense but, being as sheltered as these two appear to be, they've probably never encountered a situation anything like this in their lives.

At the very least, I hope they learned something about reality from this unfortunate incident.

Little late to the game here, but I'm a student that goes to Loyola and lives around the Rogers Park area, and I've also lived in the city more than half my life.

Every single sentence they've uttered has honestly made me laugh, if not cringe, half the time.

They were actually on the Loyola stop, not like /u/haf12 has said. But, that's beside the point. Literally everything they have done was everything you /don't/ do when you encounter someone like that on the L, if you haven't known. Don't be all flashy, be all uppity, and expect crazy people like that. It's a simple case of talking to the locals, researching the area, and doing other important things to make sure you've familiarized yourself to a place like a neighborhood of Chicago and all it has to offer.

Like... holy shit. Haha you couldn't have done worse in a city like this. One bad decision being of going to Subway instead of Chipotle. And for fucks sake, not going to the Campus Safety office which you have even said was a few doors down. Like, it's not even a minute walk from the Subway. And, the decision to even enter another random person'a car... oh man.

I couldn't laugh at this more, but I can't stress this enough. Rogers Park is a beautiful area. Very diverse, very lively. Loyola does a great job for its students in the area and has ties to much of the local community. I fear these fuckers have painted a bad picture of this place a stone's throw away from downtown, but honestly you just gotta have common sense living in the city. Nothing more, nothing less.

        Jesus, good riddance.

The only regret I had after watching this video is that crackhead not yelling "Welcome to Chicago bitch!" After sucker punching his dumb ass. You Still have multiple credit cards and business accounts that you had to transfer but want everyone to feel sorry that you couldn't start your toxic and predatory house flipping business out here in Chicago where there already is a giant increase in homelessness due to the same predatory business practices. Get the fuck out. You don't deserve our pizza.

Let me get this straight, they were paying two rents in Chicago? The place in Edgewater and one in the Loop, but they still needed a hotel because they didn't have a bed to sleep on. Have they never heard of an air mattress? Or seen the millions of mattress shops on every block in Chicago?

These kids sure know how to waste money. I hope they brought bedbugs back with them. Now that's a Chicago experience that's hard to leave behind.

As much as I resent about these kids (their delusion that they would go to a city they know nothing about and flip houses without any stress whatsoever, their conviction that their attempted mugging was part of 'gods plan', their apparent rejection of education by being privileged people who could have gone to college but have not), I don't resent them their naïveté in the face of the antisocial behavior of criminals in Chicago. If only we could raise people in Chicago to be so unfamiliar with antisocial behavior. Its nothing to brag about that 5 year olds in our bad neighborhoods know more about the criminal mentality than people who grow up in nice suburbs ever learn.

People like you come into places where human beings live and exist. This beautiful city is plagued by a divide between the rich and the poor. Your soul reason to be here was to alienate and gentrify. You don't know what that man has been through or what his intentions were. People didn't help you, because you are not authentic. You are spoiled, materialistic rich kids with out any understanding of what it's like to walk in someone's shoes.

I'm so glad you left. My purpose is to empower the beautiful people in this city. People like you leave THEM homeless. And they don't have mommy and daddy to come save them. You exasterbated this situation with drama and fear. I'm white and grew up in an all white life surrounded by privilege. I've lived here 13years working and living in the most dangerous neighborhoods. But i respect people. I don't go to foreign countries and demand they speak English and give me their land.

The angel was that man. His cheering was for the real people of the city for getting you OUT.

You have no idea what a struggle is. You're a bad ass for grabbing his shoe??

I'd be embarrassed for posting this if i were you. Poor, poor spoiled white rich kids... As a teacher, an artist, an activist, a community member and a blonde white woman who experienced some culture shock which in later realized was MY IGNORANCE you disgust me. I rarely comment on public videos. First time commenting on reddit ever.

You embarrass the good white people.

I used to do curriculum direction for a summer program for high schoolers. The kids were from all over, but the program took place in Boston. It was amazing how lacking in basic awareness of the world the kids were. This was in a decent area of Boston, but it's still a city.

        In one year we had:

-1 kid have his luggage stolen. (Because he left it in the middle of the street as his cab dropped him off) We did later see a homeless guy wearing one of his shirts which was kinda funny. (to me)

-one girl get mugged because she had her Coach wallet sticking up and out of her bag, which was open and slung behind her.

-Two students get chased by a homeless man...because they were taking selfies from inside his box.

-And 4 meetings with all students over the course of two weeks reminding them NOT to give money to homeless people when we discovered they were on average giving every homeless person they saw ~$5.

-One student chased by a swan in Boston Commons.

They were all sheltered and mostly from gated communities in Florida, and had zero instincts to help themselves even in a nice area. We instituted a rule, that before they did ANYTHING outside, they consult with one of the staff who was born or lived in a major city for some amount of time...since we also had a sheltered midwestern coach mugged that year too.

They should just stay in Arizona.

Sounds like an encounter that's happened to me 100x living in Chicago for 10 years now (minus the punch in the face, hiding in subway, getting in a stranger's car, leaving Chicago, then blogging about it). If you have a bad vibe on a person, don't give him attention. Also, don't snapchat your entire life on the platform of public transit. This is absurd. Sorry they had a bad experience but you feed a stray cat it's gonna follow you.....then punch you outside a subway.....
