SROTD Archives: Dozens of redditors have worked with Subreddit of the Day over the years. Sometimes those features slip through the cracks as writers come and go. We dig them up and get them posted and to honor the subreddit. This is one such feature.

Gravity falls. A subreddit about a children's cartoon, how complicated can it be?
Well if you don't know cryptography, audio analysis, and other methods of hiding information, it may look that simple.
Look closer however, and there is a lot hidden under the surface.
The subreddit is similarly deceptively simple. You have all the usual things a subreddit about a TV show has... the fan drawings, some of which can be amazing quality, the fan theories, ranging from the simple "This what really happened" all the way to "This character had this happen in backstory". Then you get the complex parts, the analysis of the codes, the predictions based on reoccuring themes that can be set up more then a season in advance.
The subreddit has guides to help the new person get into the show, and understand some of the layered aspects. All of Which are kept up to date, especially as the show had ended.
The subreddit has a somber, yet satisfied feel to it due to the big finale, as everyone has watched their favorite characters in the likely final official time. And yet, they will always be in the fan art, the fan fiction, continued by this brilliant community.
1. Tell us about yourselves!
/u/tuckyd I'm a student and I came to this subreddit after being a long time administrator on the Gravity Falls Wiki. My favorite episode is Little Dipper and my favorite character is Tad Strange.
/u/Hazzat Hiya! I'm an animation student, and I love cartoons. I fell in love with GF because it's a show that's pushing the medium to its limit, and taking TV animation to places it's never been before.
/u/MigMigg I'm a student studying math and computer science and it was my love of those subjects, cryptography in particular, that originally got me into Gravity Falls. When I learned there were ciphers embedded in the show, I had to get onboard! Other interests include playing music(trumpet) and developing/designing games.
2. What do you like best about the community?
/u/tuckyd My favorite part about this community is that everyone has a good sense of humor. A lot of communities have struggled to find balance between serious posts and joke posts but I think we have developed a good balance.
/u/Hazzat THEORIES! For those unfamiliar with the show, it has the kind of story that begs to be closely analysed and picked apart, with hidden codes, messages and details everywhere.
Protip for anyone thinking of watching GF: follow the list of cryptograms as you go. You're only getting half the story if you're not picking up on the secret messages.
/u/MigMigg Gravity Falls begs to be speculated about.
To add to what /u/tuckyd said about humor, it's almost a reflection of the show: doing both serious and silly very well.
3. What are some interesting memories you have of this subreddit?
/u/tuckyd Joaje. Everything about Joaje.
Joaje is this meme that started on this subreddit (I'll try to find links later) but it has spread throughout most of the Gravity Falls online communities since then. I'll try to find some relevant links later.
/u/Hazzat There was that time Alex Hirsch, the show's creator, showed up and did a hilarious in-character AMA, dropping a few hints about where the story would go next. Naturally, the answers he gave there were analysed to high heaven by the community.
/u/MigMigg The announcement that Gravity Falls was ending. It left me with a bittersweet feeling and I was glad that the community met this announcement with general positivity.
4. What do you expect the subreddit to do now the show is concluded, although on such a high note?
/u/tuckyd Hopefully, fan creators on the subreddit will keep the spirit of the show alive with new art and material. Also, Gravity Falls is such a layered show, I'm sure people will always be finding new hidden messages and easter eggs in the animation and audio.
/u/MigMigg People are always discovering the show for the first time. I enjoy reading posts from people who just started or finished watching- hearing their thoughts, theories, and reactions reminds of how I felt when first experiencing certain moments.
Alex Hirch, the creator of Gravity Falls, is working on a new show at this point, and while not much is known about it, I expect many fans will watch that show when released.
5. Dipper or Mabel?
/u/tuckyd Mabel..... sorry Dipper I love you too.
/u/Hazzat I love Dipper's character because for once he's a smart kid in a cartoon who isn't a spotty nerd with glasses and a "Well, ACTUALLY... *snort*" attitude. But you can't have one twin without the other, and together they do a fantastic job of capturing what it feels like to grow up, which is what this show is really about.
/u/MigMigg This is a hard question since Gravity Falls does a great job characterizing both Dipper and Mabel. They are quite different yet both relatable. I'll have to choose Dipper though.
