Funny thing is if anyone bothered to learn "proper" western manners anymore, they'd know that expecting a woman to shake hands with a man is pretty gauche. Not to say this isn't changing but it's a recent change. Until quite recently it was considered bad manners for a man to offer a handshake to a woman; it was left up to her (if she offers, you shake, but you never extend first).

User calling it sexist doesn't understand historical and cultural objectivity. You can't apply your morals to a different culture because in their culture, those morals don't exist. You can't say Islamic people are sexist when it's just their culture that they don't shake hands with the opposite gender.

Moral relativism is shit fyi

[–]JKNTmisplaced my civil liberties -3ポイント-2ポイント  (1子コメント)

I don't really understand what moral relativism means because when I Googled it the definition I got was too vague and full of too many words, but all I'm trying to say is that you can't tell people that they're doing their own morals wrong and that your own morals don't apply to other cultures.

Yea that is moral relativism. FGM is wrong, no matter what culture perpetrates it.

Eh you know how islamic Culture tends to treat women right? You're just making it worse saying that.

All I'm saying is that it's not my place to judge.

It is though! If it's normal for a culture to do fgm or enslave women or whatever, judge away! Please judge!

You can't judge morals of other cultures from any sort of place of authority, but you can absolutely judge them as inferior. That judgement just doesn't carry any weight.

Eh, I don't shake hands with men. I don't think it's a big thing though. a simple hello nice to meet you works.

[–]Rarus 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

If you went to an interview or were meeting an important person you wouldn't shake their hand? Just say "Hi" or something. Unless you are in Asia and either bow or wai.

I would not shake their hand if they were male. I normally try to keep my hands behind me when a situation like that might come up. And if they put their hand out I explain that I do not shake hands for religous reasons but that it is good to meet them.

What you have their is arab bedouin culture wrapped around a religion.

I feel like this comes down to the one person saying they're not allowed to touch the opposite gender and choosing. Which is a huge difference.
