Am I hallucinating? I run un-enhanced reddit at work, and now when I expand a post on the front page, the top three-ish comments are showed along with the content. Stealth added feature?

You are in the prestigious 1% of users seeing this test. Congratulations!

You heard it here first /u/chainmailtank is a stuck up 1 percenter. Break out the pitch forks

I really hate this feature. Is there any way for me to opt out of it or stop it? Like a user settings option?

So am I and I just want to be on record saying I hate it.

I clicked into a topic... I want to see all of the comments.

Three-ish? You're the first one to report back! Any thoughts on the subject?

Mobile is still encountering many issues that were present since the beginning of the mobile site - such as pictures being loaded with a "play" button over them, failing the load the image and displaying "image not found" and displaying an album a few inches to the right so that it is impossible to progress through the album without going to posted link, etc.

Are these issues being worked on? Or are they back burner to larger issues?

Also, so that this comment is exclusively complaints, I really appreciate the faster load times and the new comment interface! It fixed many the issues I had trying to press the right button quickly. And the animation for upcoming and down voting pretty nice!

Thanks!

Yes, those issues are being worked on. m.reddit.com was stagnant for a while while we finished up the new version, but now we're cruising again.

How will the advertisement targeting translate to mobile applications such as BaconReader? Is it automatically integrated or possible to opt-out of for developers?

We're not doing this on mobile just yet, nor are we putting ads in third party clients. If we come to that point, yes, we'll provide an opt-out anywhere this tech is used.

Hey spez! Is there any additional focus being given by your poor team about the issue of catching spam? A lot of spam is reported and some of them somehow stay up, especially if they have no submission history and all their spam is exclusively comment spam.

Yes! Even though we've reduced spam by about 90% the last couple of quarters, it's still an ongoing battle. Please report any spam that you see.

I hope you guys are able to cull this spam menace once and for all. Until then I live to kill spam

I mod a bunch of NSFW subreddits and these guys are relentless lately. They post ONLY links, use the same text over and over, and it always follows the same format. How they aren't shut down sooner is a mystery to me.

Thank you mods who configure Automoderator properly.

Addons like RES and /r/toolbox and some much quality of life improvements. Why have you guys just bought/hired them to implement stuff into Reddit? I feel like its such a simple solution to so many that I must be missing something really fundamental.

You must be referring to Andy. We are holding him hostage hired him because we need RES he's awesome.

Reddit search might work by then.

It would be really nice if you could search for all your comments in a specific subreddit. Sometimes I'm trying to find an old comment I made and Google doesn't always help.

You should partner with Google and get a 'powered by google' search bar. The extra step of having to Google '<search query> reddit' and then hopping back is losing me precious seconds of reddit productivity :)

At least you're being honest with the people

I just wanted to say that I really enjoy this site. Thank you and the team at Reddit for all the hard work you put into it and enhancing my internet experience for more than three years.

Thank you!

Make sure to pass it on to the team. Also, is there still the thing going where you send a postcard to your office and get a month of gold? I sent one last year from Istanbul because I had a spare postcard and stamp but you guys never seemed to receive it.

Edit: HOLY FUCK YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Also, is there still the thing going where you send a postcard to your office and get a month of gold?

That program got really hard to maintain so we opted to wind it down - see this thread. Postcards was my first project when I came to work at reddit, so it will always have a special place in my heart. I still have a huge stack of outstanding postcards I need to go through and process. Apologies for the delay, your gold will be coming soon!

Oh, don't worry, we're here!. And we appreciate your appreciation!

But seriously, can you have the m.reddit people show i.reddit some love? Or at least make reddit-to-reddit links keep me on i.reddit and not send me to m.reddit?

This might be the only patch I'm qualified to still make at Reddit. I'll check it out when I have a chance.

'This be the verse'

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.

I've entirely stopped browsing Reddit on my phone because the interface is practically unusable to me. It may be faster now, but I no longer visit the site if my phone is the only option I have at the time. Is there any way to bypass mobile view and see desktop view instead?

What celebratory festivities do you admins have planned for us on November 9th?

I think we might just turn the site off.

I'm not sure that wouldn't be the best reward for the nation: if everyone who has said,m hosted, or otherwise put forth election stuff just shut up for the day. A day of blessed silence in which we did not talk about any of it...heaven.

Like for good? Because then I might finally be able to get some work done.

But actually, interest targeting specifically does not include sexuality.

But does it include ED? For example, if I see Viagra on my friend's reddit account, can I make some educated assumptions?

Holy shit. My mom came into my room to bring me a plate of chicken nuggets and I literally screamed at her and hit the plate of chicken nuggets out of her hand. She started yelling and swearing at me and I slammed the door on her. I'm so distressed right now I don't know what to do. I didn't mean to do that to my mom but I'm literally in shock from the results tonight. I feel like I'm going to explode. Why the fucking fuck is Trump losing? This can't be happening. I'm having a fucking breakdown. I don't want to believe the world is so corrupt. I want a future to believe in. I want Trump to be president and fix this broken country. I cannot fucking deal with this right now. It wasn't supposed to be like this, I thought Trump was polling well with Admins???? This is so fucked.

Such disappointment.

The final outcome here will be an interesting demographic of Reddit's voting %s.

Lol the Hilary comment gets upvoted to the top of the responses and this one gets a "controversial" symbol next to it and half the score.

We have completely lost the concept of not downvoting something just because you disagree with it.

With the election around the corner can you please state in plain terms that you are not astroturfing content for any political entity or assisting those who attempt to? So many people here see a lack of a plain talk denial as an admission of guilt.

Of course we're not.

Are you astroturfing comments? I can't help but feel that many AMAs have questions that no longer sound like the Reddit community, but DO sound like the sort of questions a PR firm would like... mixed in with reddit questions as well, of course.

[–]PM_ME_PROD_REPORTS 4ポイント5ポイント  (1子コメント)

Does the targeting advertising attempt to link multiple accounts for the same user? I know you probably want to do this, but some users might have those accounts specifically because we don't want them linked in any way. You know, asking for a friend...

Absolutely not. We believe you should be free to express all the different facets of yourself on Reddit, and sometimes an alt is the best way to do that.

when are you gonna do something about all the racist hate subs on here?

Obligatory Edit: Thanks for the gold!

After a user posted a link to a leaked Twenty One Pilots song from the Suicide Squad soundtrack, Atlantic petitioned a NY court to order us to turn over all information related to the user and any users with the same IP address. All my friends are admins, take it slow

You say you are improving adverts, but the only adverts I ever see these days (and I don't use adblock), either at the top or sidebar, are for subreddits, and the very occasional advert for something only available to US customers (im in the EU) or something very dubious.

Just as a test, I opened the front page 10 times and all the sidebar ads are for subreddits, and only one 'highlighted' post at the top was actually an advert for something, the rest were suggested posts.

I'm struggling to understand where your ad revenue comes from.

  2. Search?
  3. Free speech?
  4. Duck/horse?
  5. New mod tools?
  6. Banhammer?

[–]Nottabird_Nottaplane -8ポイント-7ポイント  (8子コメント)

Yo, are you guys considering adding Webm & PDF support for Reddit? The former would be particularly useful for places like /r/kpics, and PDFs are just generally useful.

Btw, /r/The_Donald has been botting for a minute now. I understand why you can't ban them (at least for the time being), but what have you been doing about vote manipulation in general?

EDIT: Could you guys put some kind of 'previous subreddit' or some such tab, that links you to the subreddits you've been using the most for the past 30 or so days on the Reddit app? Or like a shortcut bar like what RES has? It's kind of annoying to have to navigate to the search bar just to get to subs I check every 10 or so minutes. Also, have you tried opening soundlcoud links on the app? Even if you already have the SC app on your phone (iPhone 4), it links you to the appstore if you press 'listen on soundcloud.' Might not be up to you, but if it is...

Thank you so much for the spoiler feature!! We can finally stop marking everything nsfw.

Are there any plans currently to introduce 'tiers' of NSFW tagging? For example, subs like /r/ImGoingToHellForThis auto tag everything NSFW by default due to the nature of the content, which means that if there's porn, gore or otherwise, unless the user specifies it in the title, that warning is kind of lost due to the auto tag. Is there any possibility or plans to provide separate tags for NSFL or porn content, separate to the type of warning that /r/ImGoingToHellForThis provides?

On another note, thankyou for the work on the spoiler tags, it is very much appreciated from all users.

Why is google providing m.reddit results instead of regular reddit in search results on desktop? It's kind of annoying.

Is anything being done about mobile users having to switch mobile Reddit to "desktop" mode multiple times a day? I like the mobile version, but I'm just resistant to change, and I feel like the site REALLY wants me to see the content in mobile format.

If you opt out using this method, a cookie is set on your browser letting us know you don't want to see the mobile site. Subsequent visits should send you straight to desktop. However, if you clear your cookies or are browsing in incognito mode your preference will not be remembered.

Can you let me know if this isn't happening and I can look into it.

[–]unsub_from_defaults 7ポイント8ポイント  (0子コメント)

I've been seeing a lot advertising content get gamed to the front page by armies of dummy accounts and some political downvote brigading over the past few weeks. Would love to hear about reddit's current policies towards these afflictions and what we may see in the future to ensure individuals (or institutions) with resources at their disposal aren't able to game the system.

Ah actually I did have a question. When are we mods getting the anti-brigading tools that was promised?

https://www.reddit.com/r/ModSupport/comments/4tpla8/where_are_the_promised_antibrigading_tools/

[–]Bwob 9

(Also, Yay, spoiler tags!)

but also results in side-effects like actual NSFW content everywhere just because you want to discuss the latest episode of The Walking Dead

Did you SEE the latest episode!?!

Are there any plans to address the way that Reddit's voting system overwhelmingly promotes content which the community agrees with, rather than what's relevant to a subreddit? This is rendering a lot of news subs practically useless at the current time.

Thanks for improving the spoiler tags, though that won't help with /r/ImGoingToHellForThis since fuck the IGTHFT mods for making spoiler posts.

I also want to say thanks for making this the best community forum, you guys are great.

Can we do something about NP links? They aren't like super complicated, but given that reddit wants to them to be used while linking from other subs is there any way to make NP links a default share option?

Why cant I filter a subreddit even when I am on r/all? It annoys me to refresh the new or even rising and see um, a certain cretinous subreddit in every post, and I don't mean /r/adviceanimals.

We did have some fun with Atlantic Recording Corporation in the last couple of months. After a user posted a link to a leaked Twenty One Pilots song from the Suicide Squad soundtrack, Atlantic petitioned a NY court to order us to turn over all information related to the user and any users with the same IP address. We pushed back on the request, and our lawyer, who knows how to turn a phrase, opposed the petition by arguing, "Because Atlantic seeks to use pre-action discovery as an impermissible fishing expedition to determine if it has a plausible claim for breach of contract or breach of fiduciary duty against the Reddit user and not as a means to match an existing, meritorious claim to an individual, its petition for pre-action discovery should be denied." After seeing our opposition and arguing its case in front of a NY judge, Atlantic withdrew its petition entirely, signaling our victory. While pushing back on these requests requires time and money on our end, we believe it is important for us to ensure applicable legal standards are met before we disclose user information.

<3 spez...

Is there a way to allow targeted ads without infringing on privacy rights? I don't have a problem with someone giving me one advert over another, but I do have a problem if that information is used to identify me as an individual.

Then there's the fact that target ads are based on algorithms which focus on interests, but with no focus on likes. How can people ensure they don't end up for adverts for holidays they've just been on, or, god forbid, resources for funerals they've just attended?

Reddit is sometimes referred to as the "front page of the internet". If certain stories go viral, how can reddit ensure responsibility, and how do we ensure that your team and owners aren't busy trying to spread your own stories?

The lesser-well-known parts of reddit have sometimes developed a bad reputation, but one of the good things about reddit is a commitment to free speech. How can reddit ensure, on the one hand, that it doesn't become a breeding ground for genuine bigots or creeps, and on the other hand, doesn't end up censoring unpopular or misunderstood viewpoints or opinions under the guise of "protecting people from hate speech"?

Hey /u/spez, glad to see that you're okay. While there was some serious immediate hatred on my part early on, I'm glad to see things back to normal (kinda).

It would seriously suck to have groups like Atlantic Records ruin the fun for everyone. If anything, Youtube should have had legal trouble due to the link that led straight to the ToP leaked song. It's also unfair because Reddit is a public website which anyone can create an account and post just about anything they want with some mild restrictions. This person, had he/she had been found, should have been punished, not those who host the site that the leaked song was linked to.

Whatever, I'm glad it's all over and done with. And I'm glad you're okay.

All hail /u/spez

Why does Reddit now use out.reddit.com to redirect a user to a link when it always used to link straight to the content?

  • Why are you listed as [S] in some post comments, and [S] [A] in others?

  • Is there a complete list of the topics that ads will 'look for'? Will these ads show on RES or RIF or take usage data from either? Are there plans for these ads to expand beyond the current topic list? Are the ads looking at all Reddit usage, site wide, or specific post level interaction in particular subs?

  • I joked above that if everyone has gold then no one will see the targeted ads. Is it cost effective to simply do that (as a user) to avoid the ads, or does Reddit make more from showing the ads than the cost of gold? In other words, does gold help Reddit or interfere with potential ad revenue?

Thanks for all you guys do! I've never been more effective at wasting time before discovering this magnificent rabbit hole of commentary and drama-karma. puffy hearts

I bet you're a briefs man, or maybe you free-ball it? Do they even make you wear anything at all as CEO?

Briefs as a kid. Boxers through college. Boxer briefs when I was tired of wedgies.

Prepare your pitchforks: we are enabling basic interest targeting in our advertising product. This will allow advertisers to target audiences based on a handful of predefined interests (e.g. sports, gaming, music, etc.), which will be informed by which communities they frequent.

Raises pitchfork!

A targeted ad is more relevant to users and more valuable to advertisers. We describe this functionality in our privacy policy and have added a permanent link to this opt-out page. The main changes are in 'Advertising and Analytics’. The opt-out is per-browser, so it should work for both logged in and logged out users.

Oh, ok. Cool. Hey, you know, whatever makes you guys able to keep the lights on.

Thanks, /u/spez and everyone at Reddit! Now, what sounds good for dinner?

Why haven't you quarantined /r/the_donald?

Edit: And see my inbox/replies to my post for an example of their hate and personal attacks they launch all around Reddit.

I've been wondering if there's any punitive response planned for subreddits which allow trolly drive-by spoilers to reach /r/all. I strongly believe that subreddit should be allowed to enforce whatever rules they like within the site-wide rules, but /r/all should be slightly more curated. It saddens me that a small group of subreddits can make /r/all intolerable during times of interesting tv/movies because a minority go out of their way to ruin others' enjoyment.

My view is that these people can say what they like in their subreddits, and I just won't go there. But /r/all is different and if they want to play silly troll games then they shouldn't be allowed to reach /r/all.

Oh man, can't wait for the new modmail. Hopefully it'll be faster than the current one.
Also, the Reddit mobile site is currently pretty broken on Windows Phone (8.1). The Reddit logo floats somewhere halfway down the page, and the loading animation is all wrong, the expanding orange circle is next to the Reddit logo instead of behind it. Could you pass this on to the dev team so that they might look into it? Thanks!

Well, guess I'm supposed to somehow hate on you now as per Reddit tradition, right? Okay then, your favourite show is shit! There!

Thank you for defending a redditor from whoever the hell runs Atlantic Recording Corporation is, and I love the new mobile features you just talked about. NSFW tags have been getting annoying, so thank you for fixing that. My questions, in order of importance: What arguments against targeted ads have you been seeing recently? (Thanks for the opt-out by the way.), Why choose now to upgrade to the new 2x system? Should I do the Reddit Secret Santa Exchange? Why do you have so much gold and us average reddit peasants don't?

in general, find that subreddits that use CSS to disable downvoting to have better communities than the ones that don't. people just don't seem to understand the point of a downvote and will use it any time they see something they don't like. have you ever considered making it harder to downvote? maybe making it cost 10 karma to cast a downvote or maybe be only allowing a user to downvote a couple times a day. this would greatly improve the overall spirit of reddit and at the same time help to suppress voter manipulation.

As someone who's lurked more than participated, I've seen my fair share of events and drama regarding the reddit admin team. Some have been handled beautifully while others...not so well.

Could you tell me how easily, or hard, it is approaching an already tense situation on reddit while trying not to seem biased towards either side?

To me, it seems like an extremely stressful job, and having a look into that could perhaps help people better understand the shoes you fill every day. Also, thank you for what you do.

Hopefully you did not notice, but as of last week, the m.reddit.com is powered by an entirely new tech platform

Oh, so that's why I get redirected to the mobile version of Reddit every time I open it, despite me having selected the desktop one at least 2539204 times. When m.reddit.com was first introduced I only had to do that 358205 times.

Prepare your pitchforks: we are enabling basic interest targeting in our advertising product.

Brace yourself. The "SELLS YOUR DATA!1!1!" crowd is coming.

Can't wait to see how this will work! Ads on Reddit are always cool and relevant, even more than on websites which should know my interests better. Reddit it's one of the few places where ads create a better experience instead of a worse one.

I do appreciate that you have a sense of humor with that post title :)

You say you're politically neutral. I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not considering how many posts are censored on this site. So, why censor things that are negative towards Hillary Clinton but not censor negative posts about Trump? I see negative posts about Trump in major subreddits, but pretty much all the negative posts about Hillary are in /r/conspiracy.

Speaking of modmail, the beta we announced a couple months ago is going well. Thirty communities volunteered to help us iron out the kinks (thank you, r/DIY!). The community feedback has been invaluable, and we are incorporating as much as we can in preparation for the general release, which we expect to be sometime next month.

Out of interest, 2 subs I mod got a message saying they would be added to the beta and haven't been yet. Do you have any updated into that at all?

Prepare your pitchforks:

*grumble*

And have added a permanent link to this opt-out page.

Oh, no worries then!

Do you ever browse reddit while sitting on the toilet like we do?

The better question is, do I ever sit on the toilet and not browse Reddit? And the answer is no.

We have a cool community feature in the works as well. Improved spoiler tags went into beta earlier today. Communities have long been using tricks with NSFW tags to hide spoilers, which is clever, but also results in side-effects like actual NSFW content everywhere just because you want to discuss the latest episode of The Walking Dead.

Thank you! And comment spoilers coming soon™!

Now I don't have to keep reposting the same "give us spoiler marking" thing.

Is the mobile site supposed to not refresh the front page anymore? Every time I click the button, it takes me back to the front page as it was the last time I was there: upvotes and downvotes still showing despite the "hide stuff I voted on" setting, images I expanded last time still expanded, and so on. I have to close the tab and reopen reddit to get new front page content now.

Also, will the mobile site ever respect my "open links in a new tab" setting?

Is it a true Reddit tradition to give a gift and not get on in return? I participated in it for three years...and only got a gift one of those. I know the holiday spirit isn't to expect a gift, but two out of three years to get nothing? What if I kept doing it...would my record become 4 out of 5? 5 out of 6? I'd rather not get my hopes up, and not even sign up.

And to think I first heard of Reddit through the SS exchange, and why I became a Redditor.

Awesome. New features are always nice. Keep up the good work!

[–]Vaeh 0

Prepare to flex your admin muscles, I've got a question completely out of left field: What's the most controversial post and comment on reddit? Is it possible to find that out? As in, the post/comment with the highest number of votes that nearly or actually equals out to zero?

I know (or think) that some sort of algorithm does fudge the actual number of votes, but is it possible to find that out? I think it might be interesting.

Any chance we can better define our stance on what really is and what really is not spam and consider reopening subs like r/amazondeals once again?

Have you guys done any looking into the claims of governments / political groups paying people to influence users? This seems to be something that everyone can agree on being bad, though one side would probably point to something like CTR while the other would point to something like Putin bots. Seems like a lot of the effect is likely just exaggerated and has more to do with how the upvote system can lead to the appearance of really large swings in opinion, when they are in fact not as big, if an issue is divisive. Still seems worth looking into though. Would it even be possible to tell if this sort of activity is happening?
