I did a search and found nothing on this topic. Pete Hines confirms that ESVI isn't in development. While we all heard the news from Todd Howard at E3 that "ESVI is a long ways away" I think most of us Elder Scrolls fans assumed it was still in some form of development. Disappointing news- I blame ESO :)

Of course it isn't - that doesn't allow them to milk Skyrim forever.

Seriously ? TESVI won't come until 2020 at the earliest ? What the hell are they gonna do with the IP after Skyrim remaster is released ?

Oh well... As long as they can improve the combat in the end I don't mind.

I don't blame ESO but I think it's quite bad and isn't what I'm looking for in an Elder Scrolls game.

Bethesda only had 108 staff at the end of Fallout 4's development, and they were pretty clear they were interested on working on a new IP prior to The Elder Scrolls VI.

A lot of the additional staff they've been hiring since then has been for mobile, and I imagine everyone else is what's needed to even attempt at AAA game as their next project.

I'm not sure what people expected.

I guess a proper main line Elder Scrolls game is going to skip this generation. Weird and disappointing since last generation saw two (IV and V).

Maybe they're looking into a big expansion to Skyrim?

That might be a reason why they ported it to current-gen consoles.

Honestly, I think the classic "Bethesda game" needs a bit of a refresh at this point, and I'd wager that the team is probably a bit burned out on TES/Fallout games at this point. I don't see the problem with holding off on a new TES game until they have something fresh to offer.

I do think that whatever they are working on will scratch the same itch that their better-known games do.

I sort of wonder if the whole "paid mods" thing was a long term strategy to keep Skyrim going without a sequel in the cards. Then that fell through...

What an excellent business strategy! I guess they're still trying to break even from Skyrim. Or maybe they're extrapolating the single-player gamer's disinterest in ESO to declining interest in the series? What'evs... not my company.

Howard said they were working on two other large projects, and that we'll likely hear about those before TES6 is announced.

Todd said this back in June

And we actually have two other large projects we’re also doing that are bigger than anything we’ve done,” Howard explained. “People will probably hear about those probably even before Elder Scrolls VI. And that’ll make sense many years from now.

The Skyrim remaster was announced the day after that.
So something else still to come before ESVI

Did any of the "LIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIAARRS LIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSS" people follow their last development update?

It was pretty up front about everything:

"According to Todd Howard, we're not seeing TES VI for a very long time. In a recent YouTube Live at E3 interview with Geoff Keighley, Mr. Howard talked openly about current and future Bethesda Game Studios projects. When being asked about TES VI, Todd Howard confirmed that they're currently working on it but implied that we won't hear about TES 6 for a really long time.

Todd Howard actually went as far as saying that we'll see the 2 other projects BGS is working on, before the next The Elder Scrolls installment. Bethesdas VP of Marketing, Pete Hines also stated almost a year ago that we won't hear about the next TES game for a very long time.

The most surprising part though is Todd Howard mentioning that the technology for TES VI just isn't out there yet, for what they're planning to do. "

Presumably one of the two projects is a mobile game, but the other sounds distinctly like something that would be a new IP given they were both referred to as large projects.

IIRC they said they will release 2 full size Fallout/Skyrim scale games before an Elder Scrolls 6

I just assumed it wasn't in development. They're probably working on the first of those and the second is likely in some sort of early early preprod

On one hand: Sure a sequel to one of the most popular games ever isn't in development 5 years after it came out uh huh

On the other hand: Games take so bloody long to come out nowadays I can sadly believe we could go through a whole console gen without 1 elder scrolls game even though we got 2 last gen..

Well they must be working on something so we'll see

...Huh.

Well that explains the sheer silence on the issue. Disappointing since we're fast approaching a point where the time between mainline elder scrolls will be greater than that of Oblivion and Skyrim - if the next game's even bigger then I wouldn't be surprised as devtime being longer too. So, if they're not working on it at all, that pegs the next game being a long way off.

That doesn't really fit with what the twitter post stated, right? The guy he responded to wrote that TES 6 is probably in pre-alpha and he responded that it's not in development at all.

So pre-alpha ≠ pre-production?

Sounds great! That team really should get to work on something new. The last time they did was for the 2008 release of Fallout 3. And a new ES will be more exciting the longer the wait and the more time tech has had to gestate.

Yeah that was the idea they were trying to get across when Howard called VI's release a long way off I believe. They even said the tech wasn't there yet (implying the engine).

So I still place my bets on a 2020 release.
