Thing is, society wants you to consume. To gain contentment from buying. The problem is when your emotional well-being is tied up with what you own, rather than the sort of man you are. If your happiness is dependent on what you own then you're looking outside for validation. Let's not even get into the issues with debt in society.

It seems some of the users here are giving up on society, and taking the idea of "going their own way" even further- by becoming truly independent.

You can't be a sovereign citizen type and say screw the society unless you're wealthy and have political power. The average man has to deal with the cards he's dealt

There's nothing wrong with spending money on things. You can go your own way however you want. Some people just like to wary or rampant consumerism.
