This man made knives entirely by hand, built houses, built boats, made braces for polio victims, made over two voyages around the world in the Canadian merchant marine, built his own house, built his own shop, and pulled his own teeth. He made his own iron ornamental artwork, door hinges, and did his own carpentry.

Bill Scagel set up his own electrical power supply for his residence. He was a strict vegetarian, growing almost all his own food, but he hunted deer to feed his dogs, and was a crack shot.

He was once married, but after his wife left him, he never married again, obviously considering that marriage was just not worth it, even in the first years of the 20th Century.

He passed on at the age of 90 in 1963. His knives are still seen at knife shows all over the USA. He made a lot of them for Abercrombie & Fitch.

I am sad that I never met him when I was a kid. He lived not far from where some of my relatives were.
