Everybody loves their Trump insurance, which complies with the ACA
Everybody loves their Trump insurance, which complies with the ACA

Donald Trump went on Fox News Tuesday to let us all know he has no idea how the Affordable Care Act works, but he knows it’s a failure, because his employees love the insurance plans they have with the Trump Organization. Or maybe all Trump’s employees complain that their Obamacare is just terrible, and they all have huge problems with it. Yes, Wut?

Trump apparently has no idea what Obamacare is, or he has no idea what kind of insurance his employees have, or maybe both at the same time, since Trump has never been troubled by cognitive dissonance — he can believe multiple contradictory things at once, especially if they’re all wrong. When Trump spoke to press Tuesday at his Trump National Doral Miami golf club, multiple reporters confirmed he said “All of my employees are having a tremendous problem with Obamacare.” So boy oh boy, they hate that Obamacare, with all its problems.

Shortly after his “campaign rally” — another ad for his wonderful golf resort, really — where all his employees loved him a whole lot, Trump had a little chat with Bill Hemmer on Fox’s “America’s Newsroom” in which he said his employees just love the insurance they get through their jobs at Trump National, because it’s so much better than Obamacare. Which he just said they all have tremendous problems with.

CBS News reporter Sopan Deb captured the Wait-Didn’t-He-Just-Say-The-Opposite dialogue:

trump-obamacare-interview

Huh. So they’ve all got great insurance AND they have tremendous problems with their Obamacare? Norman! Please coordinate! We know we just made a joke in an earlier post about “Schrödinger’s Ballot Box,” but we can only conclude that either Trump’s employees exist in a quantum state where they simultaneously have employer-provided insurance (which they love) and cruddy old Obamacare (which they hate), or Donald Trump is a fecking eejit who has no idea what he’s talking about.

Dr. Gundry reveals the top 3 common foods that you would have never guessed were the cause of your fatigue.
We’re going to go with the latter, since none of the Doral employees appear to be winking in and out of existence. And also because Huffington Post notes that Trump National Doral Miami employees actually do have pretty decent insurance, “so there’s no way ‘all’ the people who work there are having ‘problems’ with Obamacare.”

So apparently Trump managed to say something true during the day — his employees like their insurance, at least. Or if they don’t, they’re complaining about the company plan.

And as Karoli Kuns points out at Crooks & Liars, one reason the employees’ plans are so good “is because of the consumer protections baked into the ACA.”

But wait! Doesn’t the ACA need to be repealed and replaced with “something terrific,” since the average price of the individual plans on the exchanges is going up this year — about as much as the Congressional Budget Office predicted it would in 2009? Well, for one thing, subsidies that help people buy coverage are also going up.

Now, this doesn’t mean the exchanges are perfect and awesome — like every program, Obamacare needs tweaks, not dynamiting. Like adjustments to the subsidies for individual plans to make them more affordable to people with lower incomes, especially in states where Republicans refused Medicaid expansion. A public option would be an excellent idea, too. And wouldn’t you know it, that crazy Hillary Clinton wants to fix those problems, instead of throwing the whole thing out, leaving millions of people with no insurance again, and getting rid of the consumer protections the ACA put in place.

Yes, we know, it would be a lot better to scrap everything and start again, since people really miss being denied coverage for preexisting conditions.

You want “pre-existing conditions” that the GOP didn’t even care to think about fixing? How about, in ’02, I think, when I was on COBRA and trying to find something cheaper, a rep of BC/BS IL, on the phone, call recorded for quality insurance, told me, quote, “There’s no insurance company in the country that will cover you until at least five years after the end of chemo” (which I’d had the first half of ’01).

Which meant that other than through a job or COBRA INSURANCE IN THE US. But we had *such* a great system before the horrible Obamacare…..

Web site said “sure!” but after he got care, the facility said “nuh-uh”. State insurance commission contacted, scolded him for actually checking on that instead of getting care right away, and he related the story of how insurance does not equal care and never will. With our fucked up medical care financing system, you are compelled to check for coverage before getting care. It’s one step from that to having to shop around for an ER to treat your cardiac incident.

It would have been surprising if he had shown any insight into the problems being seen with Obamacare. People who get insurance through their employers generally like the changes due to the regulations on what the insurance companies must provide.

People who are buying on the open market are having problems because people who need medical coverage are getting it and people who don’t need it aren’t That’s making the pool very costly and driving up premiums.

No, Kuns doesn’t say that: Kuns says that HuffPo makes that claim. HuffPo (in the linked article) also does not say that.

If Trump’s employees receive the kind of healthcare plans that it sounds like they receive (Cadillac is a word used by one of the quoted experts), then it doesn’t have to do with the ACA at all. That kind of excellent health care insurance isn’t addressed by the ACA, that I know of.

When I read blather like what he said on FOX, I really wonder about otherwise seemingly intelligent people who would ever consider voting for him. I was sitting at a lunch at a flea market at a Lutheran retirement community and overheard these guys behind me saying, how they would vote for Trump because Hillary was a criminal. Also, too, the Muslim religion doesn’t allow them to follow the constitution. I had to move to the other side of the table to get the sun out of my eyes and saw that one of them was this retired pastor who lived down the street from my mom before she moved into the nursing home part. Now, I have never had a political conversation with him, and would have assumed he was conservative and probably republican, but he’s a nice guy, seemingly, and not an obvious raving lunatic and since he would have had to at least get through seminary, not illiterate. Sorry, rant.

      • notaten

I have no response for these folks either. You can’t reason with them because they seem to be beyond reason. The “liberal” media has brainwashed them to the point that, at least as far as I can tell, if they give up the premise of what they have believed all these years, then they think that maybe their whole life has been based on lies? I don’t know, I’m just an armchair psychologist, and not a good one, but something like that is my theory. P.S. I’m not a good speller or grammarian either :)

We here in Orygun have a big, messy tax measure on the ballot, a sort of stick-it-to-the-man-VAT, to try to address a property tax charlie foxtrot measure from 20-something years ago. This measure has elements that are terribly regressive, that are inefficient, and all that, but it’s something. And, while it’s not the sales tax that we need (the No ads call it a sales tax – so that’s part of why it’s not a sales tax), it gets something on the books that can get the tweaks, to be made better, to try to get some balance to our state tax system. So, we yessed it, cuz we’re libz and it IS a tax and it DOES stick it to the Man, even if a $25M gross income c-corp Man isn’t all that much really The Man…

Dok – you can keep this head handy, replacing the last word as needed.

ED. – I see Oily Messiah has been there, done that.

  • Gwennie_G

This Obamacare is TERRIBLE! And the portions are so small!

  • Bub the Bad Zombre

Guys, We Think Donald Trump MIGHT NOT Actually Understand Obamacare

*sighs, pulls out massive ledger the size of an old NYC phone book*

“I’ll add that to the list…”

  • Kavefish

Speaking of things Donald Doesn’t Understand:

I think I finally figured out why he keeps saying the election is rigged:

He’s really just trying to say that it’s in “ship-shape.”

  • Doug Langley

    “I don’t use much Obamacare.”

So, just a little bit then?

    • Gentle Robot

I know a place you can get REAL good Obamacare. Cares the shit out of you.

      • Doug Langley

No, don’t think I can afford that much. I’ll just take half a serving, thanks.

    • Kooolest G

      just the tip

  • Gentle Robot

It’s like someone threw a softball at him in the world series and he dropped the bat and started screaming about how those people on the pitching mound, you know who I mean, are tossing rotten pumpkins at him, and in my day, which, you know, was a pretty good day, tremendous day, believe me, pumpkin throwers, especially rotten ones, the worst ones, the worst, would be coming out of here, they don’t do that these days, not any more, no, we’re too soft, we don’t, on a stretcher.

OT but I don’t think anyone will mind. Samantha Bee is a national treasure:

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/10/24/samantha-bee-gets-nasty-for-hillary-trump-confused-abortions-with-bear-attacks.html

“No! Only kindergarteners get credit for using their inside voices,” Bee said. “Our media are so punch drunk from the 16-month Hindenburg explosion of Trump’s candidacy, they no longer notice how awful he is unless he Hulks out on stage or grabs the foundational principles of our republic by the pussy, which he will if someone sticks the needle in just the right spot.”

  • NastyKatie

I read that as Trump National Doral Mini golf club.
I very much want that to be a thing.

Also too, the statement “I don’t use much ObamaCare…” bothers me a great deal. Does he think it’s a cream or something like Neosporin?

    • nasty taco truck vagenda

Got tiny hands? Play Trump National Doral Mini Golf Club!

  • azeyote

i don’t think Trump understands more than one syllable at a time –

  • CATMAN

Trump has learned that all he needs to say to get a rise out of his crowds is to say “Obama (insert noun or verb here) is a total disaster”

  • Angela Ruzzo

I had an ACA health plan. There ARE problems with them, but the problems are due to the greedy, deceptive insurance companies, which should not be a surprise to anyone, as this is hardly a new thing. Like my orthopedic surgeon required an MRI, but the insurance company refused to authorize it, saying it “wasn’t necessary.” And they don’t cover a SINGLE prescription that I have been taking for 6 years, even though they are pretty ordinary medications. And of the 2 hospitals in my town, the private one refuses to accept any ACA plan. It all comes down to greed, which is why we need a national health plan.

    • malsperanza

I had many similar problems with my health plan, which is not Obamacare. Most were cleared up when the ACA made those practices illegal. And I began receiving an annual rebate for the fact that the insurer spends too high and percentage on advertising.

My premiums continue to go up dramatically every year.

This looks a lot like his plan to defeat ISIS.

      • Beanz&Berryz

        It’s actually the same plan…

  • malsperanza

Wait, did he say that the plan his employees have is more expensive than Obamacare? Employers will be thrilled with that.

  • Khavrinen

Ok, hands up anyone who thinks Donald J. Trump at any point in time:

a.) Asked any of his actual employees about their healthcare, and
b.) Listened to what any of them said.

    Anyone? *crickets*

  • SullivanSt

This would probably be a great time to point out that states which expanded Medicaid have more stable ACA markets than those states which decided naw fuck poor people because a black man was offering free money so we can’t take it.

Also, if Doral offers group health, that prohibits individual employees from accessing the Exchange. So his first statement was a flat-out, baldfaced lie, not just an exaggeration, it had no element of truth at all to it.

Finally, my large-group employer-sponsored plan is definitely better because of the ACA rules on lifetime/annual benefit limits and out-of-pocket maximums. And that’s in NY which already had pretty strong consumer protections (suspect many of which were bypassed by ERISA).

  • JHan

I’m going with “Donald Trump is a fecking eejit who has no idea what he’s talking about.”
