But all things about the Clintons are scandals, we thought!
But all things about the Clintons are scandals, we thought!

There’s a thing Donald Trump does in his rallies, where he starts shouting random “HILLARY BAD” words about some dastardly thing Hillary Clinton has supposedly done, and Trump’s accusations don’t actually make sense, but his supporters start grunting and roaring their approval just the same. This happened twice during Trump’s Monday rally, as he told his people about two new Terrible Hillary Revelations. Both are very dumb, so we will try to be brief here.

Over at Talking Points Memo, Josh Marshall flags the first one, quoting Trump’s fake outrage over how the Clinton campaign has been “oversampling” in polls, to make it look like they’re winning, when they’re really not winning AT ALL. Here are Trump’s words:

Wikileaks … shows how John Podesta rigged the polls by oversampling Democrats, a voter suppression technique. That’s happening to me all the time. When the polls are even, when they leave them alone and do them properly, I’m leading. But you see these polls where they’re polling Democrats. How is Trump doing? Oh, he’s down. They’re polling Democrats. The system is corrupt, rigged and broken. And we’re going to change it.

[Cheers and applause]

Thank you, thank you. In an email Podesta says he wants oversamples for our polling in order to maximize what we get out of our media polling. It’s called voter suppression because people will say, oh, gee, Trump’s down. Folks, we’re winning. We’re winning. We’re winning. These thieves and crook, the immediate, yeah not all of it, not all of it, but much of it — they’re the most crooked — they’re almost as crooked as Hillary. They may even be more crooked than Hillary because without the media, she would be nothing.

Wow, so many words that mean exactly nothing! As Marshall explains, calling this a scandal relies on “people simply not knowing what words mean.” The oversampling Trump refers to, as Marshall explains, is something all normal campaigns do, where IN THEIR INTERNAL POLLING, they dive deep into demographics to learn important information about the electorate. He notes that the emails in question were from 2008, and that, because they’re about INTERNAL POLLING, they by definition “can’t have anything to do with voter suppression.”

Dr. Gundry reveals the top 3 common foods that you would have never guessed were the cause of your fatigue.
And what is “over-sampling,” really? SPLAIN US, JOSH MARSHALL!

Both public and private pollsters will often over-sample a particular demographic group to get statistically significant data on that group. So let’s stay you have a likely voter poll with 800 respondents. The number of African-Americans in that sample is maybe going to be 100 people, maybe less. 800 people is a decent sample for statistical significance. 100 is not. So if you’re trying to draw conclusions about African-American voters, levels of approval, degree of opposition or support of a candidate, demographic breakdowns, etc. you need to get an ‘over-sample’ to get solid numbers. […]

The whole thing basically amounts to zooming in on one group to find out more about them.

The “scandal” here is that Democrats do actual research on the electorate. It’s like how Hillary #rigs the debates by studying for them.

The second thing Trump mentioned at his rally (and tweeted about) is more complicated, and also more dumb. The Wall Street Journal published a thing Monday with the OMG headline “Clinton Ally Aided Campaign of FBI Official’s Wife.” OMG INDEED! Except not.

Basically, what you need to know is that Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who is definitely a Hillary ally, has a PAC called Common Good VA, which was very active in TRYING to help Democrats retake the state Senate in 2015. They were not ultimately successful. But they were giving all kinds of money to different candidates, including $452,500 to Dr. Jill McCabe, the wife of a dude named Andrew McCabe, who is now deputy director of the FBI. (He worked in a lower position at the time.) You’ll remember that the FBI recently concluded that Hillary Clinton had in fact committed no high email crimes, and thus would not be executed by firing squad, for emails.

So is there SCANDAL here? Did Terry McAuliffe give a bunch of money to a lady candidate so she could convince her FBI husband during pillow sexxxy talk time to #rig the investigation for Hillary? Only if calendars and timelines don’t matter, and also only if Terry McAuliffe is psychic. Here, let’s just let the Washington Post piss on the Wall Street Journal‘s Corn Flakes:

[T]he timing is complicated if you’re trying to prove a Clinton email connection. McAuliffe and other state Democrats — led by Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, who, like Jill McCabe, is a physician — recruited her to run for office in March 2015. At the time, her husband worked in the FBI’s Washington Field Office. Revelations about Clinton’s emails came to light that month, but there was no publicly known investigation.

According to the FBI, Andrew McCabe followed agency protocol and consulted with headquarters and with field office ethics authorities as soon as his wife considered running. […]

In July 2015, Andrew McCabe was promoted to Associate Deputy Director of the FBI. McAuliffe’s PAC made small donations to his wife’s campaign in June and August, and the bulk of the contributions in October. She was defeated by Republican incumbent Richard H. Black that November.

By the time McCabe was promoted again — in February 2016, to Deputy Director — and assumed responsibility for the Clinton email investigation, his wife had been out of politics for several months.

McAuliffe spokesman Brian Coy said the governor would’ve had to have a time machine to know all the connections that would develop.

Uh, Terry McAuliffe is a Clintonista, so we bet he DOES have a time machine, and he probably does Whitewater and Benghazi every weekend too, because that’s what Clintonistas like to do for fun.

If you’d like to skip all this boring reading and just watch the nice MSNBC man Steve Kornacki explaining to Trump campaign manager idiot Kellyanne Conway what a nothingburger this “scandal” is, you may view the following video. It is a very good example of the mean media being #rigged against Trump, by reporting facts.

In conclusion, this second Clinton scandal is not a scandal, just like the over-sampling thing is not a scandal, and we sure do hope we’re done talking about this now.

    • OddMan

The thing that bothers me is that hacking into a person’s private e-mail is a crime. I would think that the disclosure of those hacked e-mails might be a crime too.

      Criminal Penalties for Email Hacking
Email hacking is one of the most common instances of cybercrime these days, and it is one of the most severely penalized. Depending on the circumstances of the offense, the nature of the charges in some jurisdictions and the intent of the prosecution, the unauthorized access of email accounts can be handled as a misdemeanor or a felony with additional civil liabilities. In other words, the penalties for hacking email accounts can be severe.
Law enforcement investigators and prosecutors these days are focusing on motivation and intent in relation to computer crimes. For example, the unauthorized access of a computer network as a prank may be considered a class B misdemeanor in Connecticut; this means that a defendant could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, which could be reduced to a term of probation. In the same state, however, a third-degree computer crime that causes more than $1,000 in damage could lead to five years in prison.
      Crimes Related to Email Hacking
In the United States federal justice system, an email hacker may face the following criminal charges:
      Computer fraud
      Identity theft
      Wire fraud
      Obstruction of justice
It is important to remember that certain charges that may seem ancillary to the case can actually be crucial; for example, an email hacker that tries to erase his or her tracks may have a hard time trying to disprove the obstruction of justice charge.

I think they held firm for a few days on not paying much attention to wikileaks as fruit of the poisoned tree, but just like Trump, they can’t help themselves.

    • Nasty Astraea

      Where there’s smoke there’s clouds!

  • OT: I early voted today. But they wouldn’t allow me to vote twice, even though I have 2 IDs. So I went outside and punched a little old white lady spouting deplorables for trump. It’s ok to punch deplorables, right??

    • DesertedPictures

      Only with votes.

    • But I was poll watching just like Trump told me to. The little old lady was well within the campaign free zone and I was just “moving” her back to a respectable distance.

  • Oblios_Cap

The Trumpster will be in my town this evening. I’m locking myself in my house…

    • Release the skunks!

      • Now there’s an idea

        • I tried to get some of the skunks when Trumpinstein came to my hometown. But because of all the deplorables he was bussing in from out of the area, it scared them, I got sprayed in the face, and they got released into the woods instead of the rally itself.

    • Joe Beese

      A Tallahasseean, eh?

What’s the deal with this car museum he’s speaking at? They like old cars, do they? In Tallahassee?

      • Oblios_Cap

I’ve never been there. I refuse to give any of my cash to Devoe Moore (the owner). He’s a looney Libertarian who claims to be a Democrat.

  • malsperanza

At least Karl Rove had the basic good manners to shut the fuck up and disappear for a few years after his meltdown about skewed polls. I don’t suppose we can expect anything so nice from The Turnip.

    • Nope. He’s going to be found guilty of rape, fraud, and other felonies and wind up doing some Martha Stewart decorating for a couple of years. Only to come back out in time for the next election cycle.

      • malsperanza

I doubt it. Any prosecution would look politically motivated. The civil cases can go forward because they are between private citizens. But criminal charges would be using the state against an opposition candidate. I can’t support that, however merited. And I don’t think it will happen. So he’ll settle and pay a lot of cash on the civil cases, but no jail time.

        • Marion in Savannah

Pay? Donald? What’s another bankruptcy to him if he can save a few bucks?

          • kev

not all debts can be discharged in bankruptcy.

        • kev

given what has come out about Trump during the campaign, I often wondered if his campaign wasn’t an elaborate way to dodge criminal charges for exactly the reason you suggest.

          • eddi_the_Bad_Hombre

Judging by the reactions, he never expected any of this stuff to become public. Just another shining example of his ignorance of how reality (or politics) works.

there may be more horrible shit bubbling to the surface that he does expect to become public.

  • Ikimizi

I don’t see how over-sampling Democrats could hurt Trump, since his son says 90% of them are voting for his dad.

STEPHANOPOULOS: So you don’t think you’re fighting from behind right now?

    E. TRUMP: Maybe — listen, maybe, but I can tell you, when I’m on the ground, the amount of love out there is — is incredible. The amount of Democrats that I have coming up to me every single day and saying I’ve been a Democrat my entire life, my entire family is made up of Democrats, we’re coming out and voting for you, and then I look at the
backup of some of these polls, including the poll that you just showed two seconds ago and it’s showing that we’re only getting 4 percent — 4 percent Democratic support. I mean we’re getting the — the union votes, we’re getting the law enforcement votes. I mean so many of these votes had always traditionally gone to the Democratic Party and I can tell you, we’re getting 90 percent of those…

Dogs and cats, living together, and sane political analysis from Real Clear Politics

In the alternative universe where Clinton runs against a generic Republican politician, the media might have turned the emails into a sensationalized feeding frenzy. A taste of what might have been can be found in this report from The Hill about a May 21, 2015 exchange: “Top Clinton aide in leaked email: ‘Can we survive not answering questions’ from press?” As you learn from a close reading of the story, the headline is misleading.

The aide proposed to Podesta “not answering questions from press at message events” – events designed to drive a campaign theme. The proposal wasn’t a total media blackout. Moreover, Podesta’s response was negative: “If she thinks we can get to Labor Day without taking press questions, I think that’s suicidal.“ In fact, Clinton participated in a few press conferences that summer. But you don’t learn that from The Hill, which instead offered, “At one point, Clinton went 275 days without holding a formal press conference until breaking the drought in September.” That’s true … in 2016. It was not true in the summer of 2015 when the email exchange took place.

But we don’t live in the alternative universe. We live in the universe where WikiLeaks tried to take down a candidate with embarrassing private emails and failed.

    • SuspectedDemocrat

For Republicans to nominate a generic candidate, they would need to be a generic party and not the party of batshit crazy conspiracy theories.

      • sw19roadtrip

Romney was a generic candidate (boring white business guy). Just saying.

        • Teecha

His name is Mitt. How the fuck can you expect to be a world leader when your name is fucking Mitt. Ffs.

Spiro is a real name tho!

          • sw19roadtrip

            Or Barack.

          • Teecha

But Barack is his given name isn’t it? And it doesn’t rhyme with git, twit, squit, tit, shit, nitwit, shitwit or fuckwit. Why do adults use a nickname when going for a serious job? Esp a name which has such rhyming potential!

          • YoNastyBunny

Actually, his name is Willard. Wait… WILLARD???? Nevermind.

          • Teecha
    • DesertedPictures

This idea that Clinton would be unable to win agains a generic Republican is a myth. A generic Republican would be hated by Russia (no wikileaks hack), not be willing to stoke the hatred of people against clinton (no lock her up) and would have to debate based on facts (Clinton is quite the debater).

Would a generic Republican have been able to get the base support, Trump has? Or would Clinton have been able to convert some white low income people to her cause?

      • Carpe Vagenda

I think, though, a generic Republican would have had all the major networks and newspapers and the chattering clesses. Basically, what they’re saying is that Trump prevented them from electing the Republican.

        • sw19roadtrip

This time, the Democrats have the Republican ;p

          • Carpe Vagenda

In my terms, pretty much. But then, someone with most of Sanders’ voting record could have been elected as a Republican in NY when I was a kid.

      • Big Boppa (BadHombre)

Can’t help but think that all this talk about Hilz running against a generic republican is coming from the Jeb! camp wishing for what might have been.

        • eddi_the_Bad_Hombre

You mean Jeb getting his ass handed to him? He was the candidate everyone on the Dem side was hoping for.

    • Nasty Astraea

People also too seem to forget that against a different candidate, Clinton’s campaign would have a different strategy so it’s impossible to say how effective or not it would be.

Of course the point is “mute” because the Republicans suck so bad right now.

      • DesertedPictures

Exactly: we will see how she does in 2020.

The ones with the luxury yacht.

    • Michael Smith

So, if the GOP nominee wasn’t such a glorious dumpster fire, the media would have exaggerated the significance of the emails just to stir up controversy and get people to look at their advertisements?

I think that’s probably true – though I would hope many Hillary supporters would have been able to see through it anyway. But that would bring up an interesting election strategy – basically bringing in a goon to keep the media’s lust for scandal relatively satisfied.

      • eddi_the_Bad_Hombre

That is the job of the minority parties.

      • Carpe Vagenda

  • Sedagive

Hillary Clinton is a highly-manipulative woman who has clearly rigged the election in her favor:

    1) She prepared for all three debates by practicing and studying up on the issues, thereby “winning” with audiences unambiguously all three times.

    2) She has put together a monster of a GOTV machine, which utilizes sophisticated data microanalysis and highly-effective and responsive online media to give her army of volunteers an opportunity to target potential voters and turn out the vote effectively and efficiently.

    3) She has maintained a steady, level, reality-based “tone” throughout the campaign, thereby giving potential voters the impression that she’s steady, level, and reality-based.

    4) She has spent decades in public service, deliberately attaining and holding positions of power and responsibility that have prepared her for the Oval Office.

    5) She has crafted and articulated actual policy positions, thereby giving voters the impression that she is thoughtful and knows what she’s talking about.

This is all so calculated and unfair you guys! Anyone reading her leaked emails can tell that her campaign is really… boring, and that she fully understands the nature of politics and has surrounded herself with people who are… cautious and leery of any appearance of wrongdoing. My god – she’s a monster, she is winning, and we will all be forced to live in a wonky hellscape of actual governance. Why won’t anyone think of the children?

And just look at the vaaaaaaast conspiracy of left-wing voters, secretly communicating on Wonkette, making sure everyone knows, when the pollster calls, to say “Trump. No wait, the other one. Is it Clinton?”

    • Serai 1

      SHE’S SUCH A MONSTER!!!

    • cat cafe

      WITCH! BURN HER!!!

  • proudgrampa

Can’t we just have a good old-fashioned sex scandal?

    • eddi_the_Bad_Hombre

      Trump ruined that too.

    • Donald Trump, in the restroom with the Republican Senator?

      • eddi_the_Bad_Hombre

Trump and Ryan in flagrante delicto.

    • JustDon’tSayHombre

Can it involve me and Liz Warren? Because I have some vacation time I could use.

    • Serai 1

I thought we did have one of those just last week.

  • NastyKatie

If you’re a GOP donor, the scandal here is that the Trump campaign, despite having a pollster ostensibly in charge, doesn’t understand how polling is used to help steer to a win.

Trump seems to look at polling in the same way my middle school peers did slam books.

    • cat cafe

No, you’re so wrong, he looks at it like a toddler looks at a pop-up book.

  • Ryan Denniston

“quoting Trump’s fake outrage over how the
Clinton campaign has been “oversampling” in polls, to make it look like
they’re winning, when they’re really not winning AT ALL”

That’s what the sampling weights are for. Get a brain moran!

    • The Wanderer

I think Trump understands statistical sampling about as well as he understands foreign policy.

      • Mehmeisterjr

        Trump is oversimpling.

      • At the corner, turn left

Is there a statistical sampling term called ‘overstupiding’?

        • Crystalclear12

Yes,used mostly in red states and parts of California.

          • Nastyinencinitas

Jesus christ you people. I know. You’re kidding. Have a look at last night’s sunset and be jealous then. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/867f485ec3a8026bb8759f5ba36a51ee8cd3d1e01218078f2740555c7d64f29e.jpg

            Boffo. A good one.

          • Nastyinencinitas

            Thank you.

          • Serai 1

Hey, don’t pretend we don’t have redneck lunatics in this state. Go fifty miles inland and there are plenty.

          • Nastyinencinitas

God, not even that far. Vista, Oceanside, Lakeside, Ramona.

          • cat cafe

Okies, every one of them. And don’t forget the sub-Oregon assholes up in Northern-Northern Calif.

          • I miss the Belly Up….

          • Nastyinencinitas

Oh no! Sad. Ziggy is playing tonight. None of my friends are going because we can see him for free at the races every year. I’ve seen him prolly 5 times.

          • I lived in Encinitas/Leucadia/Del Mar for many years back when it only took 6 stoned surfers to rent a two bedroom apt instead of 12.

          • Crystalclear12

            Excuse me?

          • mailman27

Hey, over here we get sunrise over the ocean! So there! Course you gotta get up at 5AM, and there’s a bunch of rednecks to deal with after the sun comes up…But still!

      • bupkus23

        or maybe “human decency”?

        • Edita Espinosa (Edith Prickly)

          Words?

  • Randy Riddle

I haven’t seen this kind of grasping for straws since Jon Voight, Scott Baio and Stephen Baldwin tried to convince someone they still had a career.

  • Scooby

I heard the Clintons gardeners barber donated to Obama.

    • Nastyinencinitas

Nancy Pelosi’s dog groomer’s nephew met a guy at Target who went to the White House when Bill was president and money changed hands. Just sayin.

    • JustDon’tSayHombre

I just saw that on the internet, so it must be true!
      Can anyone confirm?

      • Kavefish

Yes, I can confirm that I’m currently on the internet.

  • Ruhe

What both of these “scandals” proves again is that understanding the world often requires time and effort. Maddeningly, much of the world refuses to be reduced to meme form. I suspect that ultimately this is why the Athenians executed Socrates. He kept reminding them over and over again that very little of real importance can be done in ten minutes. How annoying!

    • bupkus23

“…understanding the world often requires time and effort…”

      Well, that ‘splains it, then.

    • Bub the Bad Zombre

Pose the question, “explain the universe and the origin of life” to a scientist and a theologian. The scientist will talk for hours, assign you massive books to read, and when you have finished reading them, tell you: “Congratulations! You’ve just barely begun to scratch the surface of understanding what we know about it – and there is still a hell of a lot we don’t know.” The theologian will simply say: “Cuz God. Read the bible.”

Which answer is more likely to appeal to a moron?

  • Jen B_VA

does not matter. They can fact check, debunk, explain, illustrate and otherwise prove that they are full of shit, and because they said it, the rubes will continue to believe it.

  • Bad Hombre Ron

‘… we sure do hope we’re done talking about this now.’
Oh, Evan, you eternal optimist, you!

  • bubbuhh

Statistics is a branch of maths. Maths is a branch of the Tree Of Life. GOD said no partaking of any of his trees named in capital letters cuz Godshit will result. Hipso deepso Democratz, especially Clintons, are bad screwydee too also.

    • cat cafe

Math is based on ARABIC NUMBERS, so Benghazi conspiracy chemtrails!!! Wake up sheeple!

  • samrockton

“he can’t get a fair shake” not even if he shakes it twice?

    • Bad Hombre Ron

Nope, there’s always one drop that runs down his pant leg.

    • John Smith

Any more than two shakes, you’re just playing with yourself.

    • gratuitous

With those little hands, I’m going to say, “No.”

  • Villago Delenda Est

I see. This is more of that “over prepared” thing that causes Chuckles the Toddler to break out in hives.

Alas, we are still afflicted with chucktoddery in our nation.

    • Jennaratrix

“She’s too smart! She came to the debate PREPARED TO ANSWER QUESTIONS! I mean, who does that? Smart people, that’s who! We don’t want one of them as president!”

“Her campaign’s too smart! They actually look at and analyze all their data to see what it means, instead of just parroting it out to the media! I mean, who does that? Smart people, that’s who! We don’t want them running a presidential administration!”

Excuse me while I join Jed in some head-desking.

  • Bitter Scribe

I heard that Hillary Clinton actually associates with known Democrats!

    • timpundit

She was caught working for the government, too.

      • cat cafe

That bitch is even thought to be “running for President”! When will this national nightmare stop?

        • timpundit

I hear she has ties to former President Bill Clinton.

  • Callyson

  • Swampay

In an email Podesta says he wants oversamples for our polling in order to maximize what we get out of our media polling. It’s called voter suppression because people will say, oh, gee, Trump’s down

No. No, it’s not called voter suppression. It’s not called that at all.

    • cat cafe

Yes, yes it is, reporting the facts is called “voter suppression,” and preventing minorities and Democrats from voting is called “making America great.”

  • Markuserektus

One Trump sample is too many

    https://youtu.be/7EHNPZXn_FU

  • chascates

Trump mentioned his poll numbers in every tweet before they started to dive. His likeability among GOP officeholders on November 9th will be in the teens.

  • RobKanC

If you poll only republicans, Trump wins by a mile. But if you include democrats, he loses. It’s so unfair I tell ya. Trump gonna make it fair when he becomes der fuhrer.

    • cat cafe

It’s so #rigged! They include Hillary supporters in those polls! If they just poll Trump supporters, he’s totally #winning!

  • Kooolest G

I for one am glad that the republicans are finally doing something about all this voter suppression. wait, what?

  • Serai 1

The flop sweat is strong with Trump.

  • azeyote

i’m surprised trump doesn’t parade some models around onstage and tell the crowd – see no groping folks – obvious proof of all those lies – unless he can’t maintain that is –

  • Jennaratrix

We are so not done talking about this now. Are you kidding? They’ll run with this until they all keel over from cardiac arrest. (I’m implying Trump supporters are not in the best of shape, and running might be bad for their health. I’m not HOPING such a thing happens.)

  • Jonny On Maui

For the last 10 days I haven’t heard crap about Trump. Now I know why folk are so enamored about the past.

  • Cranky Man

hi Kellyanne, (sounds like the name of a toddler beauty pageant contestant)
How’s that victory speech coming? Given any thought to the transition team, potential cabinet appointments?

  • dslindc
  • dshwa

Hahahaha we will never be done with the Clinton emails. Or BENGHAZI11!1! Or Bill’s various affairs. Or whatever nonsense they dream up next.
