Trump Defies 225 Years of US Jurisprudence, Wants to Deny Terror Suspect Right to Public Defender

Following the capture of NY/NJ bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami on Monday, Donald Trump went on a rant over Rahami being given medical care and his right to legal counsel. Speaking to supporters at a rally in Florida, he said:

“Now we will give him amazing hospitalization. He will be taken care of by some of the best doctors in the world. He will be given a fully modern and updated hospital room. And he'll probably even have room service, knowing the way our country is."

The Donald was not happy. Trump was also incensed over Rahami's constitutional right to legal counsel:

"And on top of all of that, he will be represented by an outstanding lawyer. His case will go through the various court systems for years and in the end, people will forget and his punishment will not be what it once would have been. What a sad situation.”

While he believes Rahami should receive a “speedy, but fair trial,” he also believes “harsh punishment” is in order if the alleged bomber is convicted:

“Whatever lawful methods are available to obtain information from the apprehended suspect to get information before it’s no longer timely [must be used].”

Trump has come under fire in the past by critics who believe that as president, he would trample the Constitution. His comments on Rahami will only serve to bolster their case.
