          Self employed marketing consultant here, very nervous about this. I already can't afford $220/mo and I'm a healthy 33 year old man, this is absolutely ridiculous. My fiancée and I are stretched so thin as it is, I haven't spent money on something just, for fun or entertainment or for myself in so long because we can't keep enough saved. We've been engaged for almost a year and have only managed to save up $800 towards our wedding because my fiancée was laid off on 4th of July (thankfully she got a great new job and we just finished relocating) so we had to dip in to our wedding savings to cover the loss of her wages and now all that's left is $800. Since then I have lost a major client when I relocated and have yet to replace them and killed my brakes towing a trailer across 3 states so I'm about to start dipping in to our pathetic little $800 wedding savings fund and I swear to God man it brings me to the verge of tears. Sorry to vent here, just feeling heavy right now haha!

            Mainly it's the people who don't sign up until they're sick. It's great in theory to have no pre-existing conditions (guaranteed issue), but in practice, that means that healthy people are not paying in the premiums necessary to pay for the care of sick people (who are also not paying premiums).

            That's what leads to the death spiral. It's like insuring your house after the fire. It's not insurance anymore; it's healthcare paid for by someone else. The insurance companies are going broke; that's why they're exiting the markets.

            They are losing money because of that, but the reason they hate it so much is because Obamacare basically forces them to spend X amount of premiums on healthcare, but then also hits them with insane fees to cover all the subsidies and because the government always needs more money.

            That means they have to raise premiums even more because otherwise their % of contributions to healthcare drops too low and they get nailed with fines.

            The whole system was designed terribly from the start and nobody said it would work who wasn't being paid to say that.

            Yep. I'm self-employed as well. I am looking at a $1400 fine in 2017. I won't pay it. Premiums for 2017 are looking to be $450 per month for the worst bronze plans with $8,800 in out of pocket costs before insurance kicks in. That's approximately $14,000 out of my pocket for no service. What's the point? I may as well roll the dice and file for bankruptcy in the event of a catastrophy.

            Tax lady I talked with says asking for the deductible is a gamble because it makes it hella cheap but if at the end of the year you made too much, you end up owing like 6-10 thousand just to pay it back, actual taxes not included. She advised I suck it up and hope for the best

If you have some chronic condition requiring regular expensive prescriptions or doctor visits to keep under control, you can't afford the premiums if you are gainfully employed, so if you want to live, you have to quit your job and go on welfare to qualify for the free tier.                   Feel your pain, paid my own premiums for 20 years, until Obamacare drove them up to a level where it made sense for my wife to go back to work. Not only did our premiums go up 30-40% but our deductibles doubled, and benefits were cut. We were paying 12k for a ppo with no dental, script, or optical. Needless to say that we only got meds availble in generic. Was just reviewing our plan options since the employer is basically modding them to Obamacare constraints so the process begins again, even with her employer providing. Raising employee contribution, raising deductibles, and cutting benefits, all so they can make subsidized plans available cheaper for illegals and those who don't work. Wife works at a hospital, and you can only imagine the stories I hear. Prob 80% of the people clogging up the hospital are demanding, rude, fat people who are on welfare plans. Keying doctor/staff cars, threatening employees when the don't get the service they feel they deserve.

                  The really bad part is that the cost of "coverage" through these insurance companies doesn't provide any relief from the price of medical care. The cheapest policy blue cross has to sell my daughter and I will be about 800 a month. Once we hit a $12,500 deductible then they'll pay for half the care. So 800/mo X 12mos + 12,500 = $22,100, that is how much I'll be out of pocket in a year if anything happens before they'll give me any help with the medical bill. The fine for no coverage is a joke, they can only get it from you if they owe you money back in a tax return, tighten up withholdings and you'll never have to pay a penny. I'm putting the money I would spend on the premiums into savings so I can actually pay medical bills if something should happen. I figure bankruptcy will be the solution if I have more than 20k or 40k in medical bills anyway ¯_(ツ)_/¯ .

                                  It is atrocious. Self-employed; before obamacare, I had a solid plan for about $120 a month. I could see my doctors, the deductible was okay, and it was great in case of a car accident, etc.

                                  Obamacare kicks in and to get the same plan was like $500. I had to give up some stuff just to pay $350 and now I can't see my doctors. They were all on the lists of accepted doctors, but then the doctors simply refused to take it. Spent tons of hours on the phone. Disgusting mess. Now the info for next year came in the mail and they want over $400 for the same plan I had last year.

                                  It is well over a 500% increase for many if you want the same plan you used to have. Total disgusting mess.

                                    As an insurance agent who noped the fck out of the industry 2 years ago - the biggest issue isn't the premiums.

                                    It is the lack of insurance providers. I live in Tampa - when I was an agent there were United/Aetna/Humana/Assurant/Cigna/Coventry/BCBS/AvMed and a handful of others for health insurance options.

                                    This year it will be AMBEST (Medicaid guru) and Florida Blue.

                                    AMBEST is the only company in the exchange that isn't losing it's ass. If you look it up their market experience it is all with Medicaid.

                                    When it is all said and done Florida Blue will also drop out of the exchange. All that will be left is the company famous for working within Medicaid networks and pricing.

                                    So really all we are left with is a Medicaid quality of care at astronomical prices. Most fucked up thing about the ACA exchanges - it is all funded by the taxpayers. The people aren't paying the premiums/the deductibles or the copays. It is all being paid by monthly subsidies on their premiums and what is called "cost sharing reduction" to cover the rest of the costs. It is madness. The only people who benefit from this are the major hospital networks and pharmaceutical companies.
