Where's Guns Germs and Steel

I figured CGP Grey worked for that since he made the infamous (on /r/badhistory) pro Guns, Germs, and Steel video

Link?

Why is it so bad?

GGS is a "popular science" book. As such it makes some general statements for ease of reading. And its conclusions arent 100% foolproof.

But because its popular people like to find chinese americans in the armor and try and discredit all of it because it has some faults.

like to find chinese americans in the armor

I can't tell if this is racist or not.

Its a trap. You are now a racist.

Pick up your sheet and burning cross at the next meeting.

Omfg that took me way too long to figure out.

What do they disagree with?

Go to his subreddit, find the video and go to the comment section. I have yet to see a single historian who argues against the actual theory and not some strawman version of it or some semantics bs

[–]Johnny_Horsecock 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Lotta those subs anything "bad" is something that is not a part of the dialectic.

They dislike the facts presented and the research techniques that went into it. Personal disagreements which leads them to smugly believe the entire thesis is incorrect.

I don't know history well at all tbh but Sabaton are great. They put on some awesome live shows.

uh oh. I finally found one that's me.

Needs more World of Tanks.

Seriously, I just want to go rewatch the cool tank battle scenes from Fury, and then some kind of morbid curiosity always compels me to scroll down to the comment section to read a bunch of youtubers' accounts on how Tigers were literally indestructible and showing anything being able to damage them is just American propaganda.

EVERYONE knows REAL tank historians play War Thunder.

inb4 russian bias.

Oh lordy

at least its getting better on /r/warthunder! Not as many posts showing up on /r/ShitWehraboosSay, in fact Id argue the sub is getting more and more USA biased instead even as the games internal bias moves more towards the Germans than the Soviets, at least with tanks.

To be fair that scene is complete bullshit in a way. Not from a "duh but the tiger is far superior no sherman could ever penetrate it at any range" but from a tactical point of view.

Dan Carlins hardcore history is excellent. I repeat his history lessons frequently

Not really excellent. Entertaining, sure, historically 100% accurate, not

Are you very knowledgeable in the field?

As someone who likes to read history as a hobby (completely non academic), I'd like some recommendations on authors, right now I'm with Hobsbawn, is he good?

[–]Danny_Browns_Hair 0ポイント1ポイント  (2子コメント)

Unfortunately, I'm not, I can recommend my favorite historical book of all time, but I'm by no means a expert, or close to one

no problem, but do recommend :)

[–]Danny_Browns_Hair 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt is amazing

Exactly. Great pop history and decent overall, but he's not primarily an educator.

I'm writing a paper on WWI and the Christmas Truce and decided to listen to a couple parts of Blueprint for Armageddon where he talks about some of the events that I'm writing about and just got completely sucked in again. I only meant to listen to 5 minutes here and there, nope, mandatory HH marathon.

Disclaimer: I did not use HH as a source by any means, simply used HH as 'motivation'

I completely get that. He's quite a story teller. My personal favorite is the Ghengis Khan series.

I'm going to have to give that series another shot. I'm always hearing people rave about how good it was, but for whatever reason I couldn't get into. Although that is most likely because I tried to listen to it at work, so having to pause every few minutes to talk to people probably ruined the flow. My favorite is the WWI series. I have always been extremely interested in the two World Wars, but WW2 kinda shadows WW1 in terms of content so Blueprint was enjoyable because its really the first entertaining telling of WW1.

I've actually been thinking how a WW2 series might be, but honestly I think that a WW2 series might suffer because the history/story of WW2 is so well known.

Yeah i came here to mention Dan Carlin is a legitimate great author on history

He's legitimately not a historian.

And he mentions exactly that every chance he gets. Shit, he'll go out of his way to just reiterate that he's not a historian, just a fan of history.

ah the supahotfire defense

He is a great teacher though.

[–]Alexander_Baidtach 17ポイント18ポイント  (2子コメント)

Armchair Historian General.

/r/totalwar finds this accurate.

Yeah I figured totalwar would make it to the armchair historian starter pack, seeing as how it's very historically accurate

There is nothing armchair about Paradox games.

You forget the "USA military is the sole reason Germany was defeated"

And denying

  • Russian military
  • UK military
  • USA weapons, food and oil
  • Azerbaijan oil fields
  • penicillin

And many other factors had a lot to do with it

Edit: Canada and the strategic maple syrup reserve

I tend to see these three camps equally:

  1. The US completely saved Europe.

  2. Russia could have won the entire war singlehandedly.

  3. German military technology was so advanced that literally nothing could beat it.

These are all absurd, but honestly the wehraboos are my favorites. The way they talk about Nazi Germany makes it sound like they could have won the entire war with like maybe five Tiger tanks, but at the end of the day they still, you know, lost.

Don't forget they could totally take on modern militaries!

I'd say one of the more important reasons the russians could even move up at all is because of the lend-lease deal and that the russians got massive amounts of food and military steel from the US.

And even with all of that nobody ever talks about just how close the Nazis were to wrecking Russia. Stalingrad was really the USSR's last hope, and it was due to a few choice errors that the German advance was slowed enough to allow for the Soviets to re-mobilize

Yes. I have listed this. Logistics won the war, along with many other factors. That's the point, no one thing won the war on its own.

hey, fuck you. Canada took Juno beach on d Day

This sub is really starting to get savage.

Yeah this one really got me locked down.

Me at work trying to be an armchair historian:

"Well the Roman Republic fell because... well... it was a couple of things... but it was like once one guy got murdered, the flood gates were opened and several of the subsequent rulers were assassinated as well... but that's not the main cause... um... you should listen to Hardcore History, there's a really interesting series about it."

so anti-Wehrabooism and Wehrabooism?

Also that's a Panzer IV, Wehraboos like Panzer V "Panther" and Panzer VI "Tiger"

And CGP Grey haven't really done history videos in a while

And Paradox are too busy making space games

And Civ VI is barely released so it's a bit too recent for a starter pack

No clue what hardcore history is though but Sabaton is the shit

Too busy making space games? Since Stellaris they released Hearts of Iron IV and a major DLC expansion to EUIV (the most significant one in quite some time).

The point of putting /r/ShitWehraboosSay on there was to demonstrate that most of the crap Reddit historians say belongs on that sub.

Ahhh, I thought you were somehow saying they were as bad as the "muh german engineering."

Yeah, r/shitwehraboosSay is so close to being great. Unfortunately they are the opposite extreme. If you say one thing remotely positive about their military at all you are basically Goring.

[–]Generic_Green_Squid 11ポイント12ポイント  (4子コメント)

You've nailed it with CGP Grey.

He usually makes 'DAE automation is future and humans sux amirite' videos nowadays.

Right? I was really intrigued with his video on traffic until he pulled a 'NOPE! POST-SCARCITY IS AROUND THE CORNER AND THE FUTURE IS NOW LOL XD SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE COOL SCIENCE FACTS!'

Just watched the end of the video again. "Self driving cars will make traffic more efficient" is a lot different different then saying post scarcity is around the corner(not to say he doesn't say that in other videos). You made quite a strawman there. edit: reworded

[–]Murican_Freedom1776 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

He is almost exclusively pandering to the /r/Futurology type retards. All his videos are doing is confirming what people, especially teenagers and young adults want to hear since they make up a majority of YouTube and Reddit. If you can get a video on the frontpage of Reddit, it will get resposted everywhere. News articles, blogs, Facebook, and it will trick YouTube's algorithm into making it a trending video and suggested video on millions of YouTube watchers homepage.

The same principal applies to almost everything, including news articles. That is why you see a news article on the frontpage that makes you think, "Jeez, Reddit is eating this up." Those news sites don't care as much about accuracy as much as they do clicks (ad revenue). This is also why a couple of the favorites of many news sites to cover is Elon Musk and Bernie Sanders.

If you make it to the front page, whatever you posted will be rehosted, reshared, and talked about on many other sites besides Reddit. You can almost guarantee that.

I can't believe there are still sane people on reddit in regard to his videos. There are definetely interesting videos, but the new ones are mainly "robots will take over anything" and "humans are inferior to all technology". There is nothing wrong with speculating, but his viewers seem to be mainly underage boys that believe everything as long as it sounds reasonable. A lot of the reasoning behind his ideas appear odd to me, like, of course there will be a point in time when self driving cars are safer than humans, but saying that this will make humans useless.. I don't think so.

Im kind of confused now... i know about hardcore history and CGP history and i find booth entertaining but the other parts confuse me a bit, and does this hint at Carlin and CGP being bad at history or...?

I think it's making fun of people who watch a 10 minute video then act like they're experts on the subject.

Not enough Red Orchestra.

There's armchair historians on here who haven't even dabbled in any of that..

How low do the entry requirements go?

Aren't all historians armchair historians??

"Guns, Germs, and Steel was categorically debunked and Jared Diamond is the laughing stock of serious historians like me and my friends on the internet."

You forgot the assassins Creed

I hate /r/ShitWehraboosSay because over there you'll get downvoted to oblivion for acknowledging anything that German did that actually was well designed.

Luckily Dan Carlin frequently reminds us that he is no historian.
