That makes him smart.

Only fools pay for goods and services. How stupid are you all, folks? Adam Smith and George Washington would be spinning in their graves if they could see you now, how stupid are you all?

Unless they're poorer than you, then if they pull the same thing they're just freeloaders.

Remember, if you're rich and pay no tax you're a smarty pants but if you are poor and pay no tax you're a leech.

If you are an illegal immigrant picking fruit under the sun to send money to your family you're scum, if you're an alleged billionaire hiring illegal immigrants you're smart.

I love how that's an excuse.

"I only did these shitty anti-American things because someone who didn't even have the power to make it illegal didn't stop me. So elect me and put me in a position where I have even less accountability, I'll surely start having some self-control then."

I've encountered this logic:

  1. Trump is smart enough to avoid paying taxes.

  2. Trump is an expert of the tax system.

  3. Trump knows how to fix the tax system.

  4. Trump will fix the tax system.

Like, this is a completely rational chain of events and expectation.

Yea, I guess that's why we put illiterate, racist, bigot, career criminals on the Supreme Court. And the Pope is a murdering, neoatheist who drinks the blood of actual humans and eats children.

From the front page of Breitbart: "EXCLUSIVE: OBAMA'S THIEF DAUGHTER STEALS FROM SMALL BUSINESS !"

There was an Enquirer headline that said something like "IS THE OBAMA'S MARITAL STRIFE DRIVING MALIA TO DRUGS?"

No, the Obamas are the cutest presidential couple ever and the fact that she's a teenager is driving Malia to "drugs". Everyone smokes pot.

To be fair, any headline in the form of a question can be answered with the single word "no". That's simply Betteridge's law.

I did that shit in middle school. But I felt bad about it then.

    Who does this?

A guy who lives in a giant tower in NYC with his name on the top in gold.

One of the Freakonomics books had an interesting chapter about how rich people seem to care less about being honest with small amounts of money. They interviewed a guy who delivered bagels to an office building and had an honour system where he'd just put up a sign saying "bagels $1" and then come collect the money later in the day, and he said that invariably it was the floors with the executive offices that took the most bagels without paying for them.

The authors posited that while it's possible that the reason the execs got where they are is because they're dishonest, it's also possible that as you get richer you start to lose sight of how important a dollar could be to some people, and you also get used to going to events where lots of things are provided free of charge anyway.

So to a poor person, taking a bagel without paying for it is a big deal, but to a rich person it might seem perfectly normal.

Not that that makes it OK for Eric Trump to take free lemonade, but it might help explain why someone like him wouldn't even think twice about doing it.

It spreads to everything too. Monetary damages for criminal offenses mean much less to a wealthy person, neither does an increase in insurance rates. Hence, you see lots of wealthy jagoffs speeding, soloing in the carpool lane and generally ignoring traffic laws.

Some countries try to solve this with traffic fines that are a percent of income (infamous 103,000 ticket), but critics have complained it has police targeting expensive cars hoping to hit a jackpot.

The further solution would be to take the fines from tickets and put it somewhere well away from the police giving the tickets, like a fund to pay for something beneficial to society.

Honestly, I can't fathom how it was ever thought to be a good idea for ticket fines to in any way go to the ones giving the tickets; such a perverse incentive! (Same goes for civil forfeiture.)

At our house we take the refund from all our recycling and use it to buy pizza whenever it adds up.

Can we take all the income from fines and use it to buy everyone in the city pizza? That would be pretty rad.

They also grew up in a world devoid of real life consequences, what the fuck in as burger joint manager gonna do to punish him? Ask him to leave nicely? Trump Jr knows no one can or will do anything about it.

This actually way worst than just being a jerk. Being so disassociated from common social norms that you can't help but be evil.

Or, Capitalism corrupts morality when you start seeing stuff as numbers and pros and cons, and not by the fundamental nature of what they are doing (stealing)

Eh I think I agree more with the bagel guy.

It's all about perspective. If I'm making $150k, I personally am not as anal about losing a dollar. It's easy to project that perspective onto other situations, like with a dollar bagel.

edit: The converse is also true, though. Don Jr. shouldn't fucking care if he spends the extra buck on a drink or not. Using the water cup to get lemonade shows intent and malice.

Capitalism is just a name for an economic system. Throughout history there has been plenty people in power that has abused their authority that are just as bad. Just happens that in a capitalistic society that wealth and career positions are the measurement of that power.

Capitalism as the admiration and overvaluation of capital, not just the economic system.

Capitalism doesn't overvalue capital it values it relative to labor.

No it doesnt, value is almost everything is arbitrary in a capitalistic worldwide system, stuff just doesnt make any sense but people hold it as actual value judgements.

That's why he should have made the bagels $20 on those floors. a) even those guys value $20, and b) they're way more likely to have a $20 on them rather than a single.

True! It could have been a great exercise in price discrimination. Funny that he as a former economic analyst wouldn't have tried that.

I see the point about financial perspective, but I wonder if any of it is social perspective as well. Sort of a "I'm CEO of X, I don't have to follow these peasant laws of paying for things. Ha, free bagel!"

Without knowing the actual price, I'd guess the lemonade at In-N-Out is like two dollars. I'm also assuming it's a place with fountain drinks you fill yourself, but also cups available for water, which they don't charge you for. You could technically take the cups and fill them with soda or lemonade, but it's frowned upon because, hey, a soda cup is like two dollars.

This guy is rich enough to have grown up in a skyscraper with his name on it, and he's drinking lemonade from the free water cups.

    [–]__RemindMeToStudy__ 36ポイント37ポイント  (13子コメント)

Wouldn't that make him seem more down to earth instead of whatever the OP is claiming?

Edit: sorry, missed the part where he stole the drink

How is that down to earth? An honest, humble man would pay for his drink like every other person in the restaurant. Like society intends, like the law intends and how the business expects you to. I've seen HOMELESS PEOPLE come into in-n-out, pay for a lemonade and walk out with a lemonade.

A down to earth common man would chug the second half of his drink and take advantage of the free refill policy on his way out.

The clear plastic cup is what you get if you ask for water, and they don't charge you for a drink. If you put other drinks in it, you're basically stealing as you didn't pay for a drink with your meal.

And lemonade is usually the drink with the water lever next to it.

Adding onto the other responses, if you pay for a fountain drink, they give you an opaque cup because you paid and they don't care what you put in it. If you ask for a cup for water (which is free), they give you a clear one so that they can see that you only put water in it. That's how we know this is a water cup.

It's illegal and can be considered theft, tons of teenagers do this kind of stuff and 99% the consequence is getting kicked out or just having to pay. Kids have actually gotten arrested for this though. At best it's something an edgy rebellious teen does.

Most fast food places offer a cup for FREE water, and PAID cups for other drinks. Eric has taken the FREE water cup and filled it with a PAID drink, despite being the son of an alleged billionaire. It shows he either REALLY isnt as rich as believed, or hes stealing because hes such a cheap bastard a dollar soda is to much to justify. Either way hes a tool

Or he has no idea what happens inside a fast food restaurant, and is assuming he'll get some sort of invoice at a later date.

Which is actually the worst of all scenarios IMO.

At most restaurants in the US, you pay for drinks, but water is free. If you pay for a drink, they give you an opaque drink cup, and you can fill it up with whatever you want at the fountain. This includes lemonade. If you ask for water, they give you a clear cup, under the expectation that you will only get water from the fountain.

In-N-Out has pink lemonade. Not a fan of the Trumps, but I had to log in to help those not from around here...

The ones I've been to have both.

The ones near where I live have regular lemonade in the giant mixers and also have that shitty fountain-drink lemonade. I would assume its from one of those.

This is an extra reason to be upset. Why would he drink the dumpy fountain-drink lemonade when the glorious In-n-Out pink lemonade is right there!

They have their own pink lemonade but you can still get that minute maid fountain lemonade.

You mean the one with the water tap that we, the common people, who know water is clear and labeled on the little side tap, that one? So if this guy made a mistake it's his dad's fault?

Would you also be this hard on your grandparents? I'd imagine they'd be about as in touch as the wealthy elite (Hillary, if she were slumming or pandering might face a soda tap.).

    Go Dr. Stein!

I'm surprised Eric Trump would let someone take a picture with him while he's taking a shit in his pants.
