Smalling in the future (self.reddevils)

Dreadful performance from most, so many lazy efforts. Smalling summed up the problem with him imo, when he's playing regularly and has good players around him he can be a tank like he was for lvg, but he will never be top level. Today he arguably had a hand in every goal. First one was more blinds fault but you have to cover that as a unit, there's only one player there. Second one he's got his hands up in the air while his man is goal side scoring and he's ball watching. Third he is too slow to cover the gap then gets his body position wrong, ending up dangling his right leg to block a shot to the opposite side. Fourth one is just a shambles all round and he gets walked past by Kante of all people. Some of these errors are bigger than others but top players don't make 4 of these mistakes in a game. He certainly wasn't the only one and I don't want to scapegoat him, this is more a discussion of where he's going now. At least he will never be as bad as rojo. Performance further up wasnt even that bad but we gifted them this game today and smalling was a big part of it. Do we need a partner for bailly? Jose maybe thinks so if we believe he was after fonte in the summer. At least he will get a run with blind now bailly is injured so hopefully he can concentrate like last season and become the beast again because he has it in him.

TL;DR - smalling will never be top level, do we need an upgrade?

Edit: Yes he was great last year in a super defensive team as I already mentioned twice. My question was IS HE TOP LEVEL ie. is he as good as Vidic, Rio, Stam. Clearly the answer from the 4 posters so far is yes.

Lol, Bailly just tore his ligiaments, Blind is a liability, Jones is Jones, Rojo garbage.. and Smalling is who you pick on? After his worst performance in 2 years?

Nobody was talking about replacing Smalling before today. He has one stinker and everyone wants him off the team and gone from the club.

Ffs, everybody has a bad match sometimes. We can't go around replacing each player with a new one after every game. He was at fault in all the goals, but so were other players in at least 3 of them.

There was a lot of talk about Fonte in the summer. Today was obviously the catalyst for me to bring this up but Smalling always has a mistake in him, I'm not saying he's shit because he had one bad game. He was great last season like I said I my original post, are you saying he's a top drawer centre back?

He was the one of the best centre back in the league last season behind Koscielny, and tied with the Spurs' centre backs.

Ball playing has never been his strong suit and we can't expect someone at the level of Boateng or Godin to join the club in the current form.

Last year we were calling him the best defender in the premier league and now after one bad, shit like this starts popping up. Get a fucking grip and stop being so reactionary.

If it were for me, Smalling should be sitting the next 2 matches as a warning for everyone to heed at the club and I would dare to play Timo at CB. This is the time to show that no one's untouchable on board (for the record, Zlatan would be next).

In any case, buying another CB to provide serious competition should be in the cards. Just asking: why is Ashley Williams performing well under Koeman and yet would not be an upgrade on some of our CBs? That's just a hypothetical question BTW; I'm not serious about Wiliams except on the fact that there are competent CBs out there who can do a decent job in a rotation game.

Smalling is better than Bailly. Have you forgotten how reliable smalling has been in the past 2 seasons?

Bit early to be making that statement. Bailly hasn't had that many games but has certainly played better than Smalling at the same point of his career. I obviously haven't forgotten because I mentioned it twice in the post.
