Facelift for our Facebook Web Form App by Karolina Kurcwald

As we informed you some time ago, we’ve been working on improving our Facebook sign-up form application. So here it is. Since a few things have changed, here are updated A-Z instructions for you so you can add it to your Facebook fan page and start collecting sign-ups right away.

GREAT NEWS! Just recently, we’ve launched our new list building feature – The Forms. With the List Builder Wizard and List Builder Apps you can build just about any type of sign-up form you can imagine and put it on your website quickly.

On top of that, we’ve also updated our Facebook Web Form App! If you haven’t used it yet, take a look at our full installation guide below. If you have, however, there’s no need to install it again. It will update itself automatically 🙂

1. Log in to Facebook and go to the application

2. Click “Add to Fan Page”

3. First, authorize the app and from the list of fan pages for which you are the admin, choose the one you want to add the sign-up form to and click the “Add Page Tab” button

4. Now go to your page and you’ll see a new “Sign up” tab in the Apps section (by default you’ll find it below the About the Page section). In case you have more apps installed, you can also find the ‘Sign Up Web Form App’ in the ‘More’ section, available right in the Fan Page navigation bar.

Here you can also change the default Application Thumbnail Icon and its name. Just click Manage Tabs » Add or Remove Tabs » Edit Settings » Custom Tab Image and Custom Tab Name.

Upload an icon of your choice (the dimensions must be 111 pixels high x 74 pixels wide)

5. Then, click the application tab and you’ll see a box to log in to your GetResponse account (this will allow you to sync your GetResponse account with the app). Just fill in the API key to log in. (check where to find your API key)

After you log in, you’ll see the Settings box where you can:

  • Choose the web form from a dropdown window
  • Choose the campaign you want to add your new subscribers to
  • Add the text you want to be displayed on the tab – a message to encourage visitors to sign up and to explain what they will receive
    Note: basic HTML tags are allowed: <div> <p> <span> <a> <br> <h1> <h2> <h3> <style> <b> <u> <i> Adding images is not allowed.
  • Align the form (left/center/right)
  • Adjust the position of the additional text

7. Now click “Save” and you’re done! You can also preview your tab at any time as well as make any necessary adjustments.

If you try to put a sign-up form on your Facebook Page but have not yet created a form in your GetResponse account, you’ll get the following information after logging into the app.

Go to your GetResponse account and create a form for your campaign, then go back to the fan page and click “Go back to Settings”. You’ll now be able to choose the form and adjust the settings of your sign-up tab.

And if you see this message:

Try refreshing the page. If that doesn’t do the trick, contact GetResponse Customer Support, providing the details of your GetResponse account and the fan page address. We’ll help.

Once you’re done with the edits, your Facebook Sign-up can look just like the one below.

A few extra tips

Read our previous post to learn how to change the name of the tab to anything you want, how to make it the default landing tab, and a couple of other tricks.

Also, watch out for any external graphics you’ve added to your sign-up form.  Since it’s now mandatory to use secure browsing (https) for all Facebook apps (including ours), all content must be added via https also, which means you’ll need to host it via services that use the SSL protocol. Otherwise Facebook will keep warning you that you’re trying to access unsecure locations while using the application.

    How do you overcome the issue when Facebook users have “secured browsing” turned on. When this is on and someone submits the form, they get a warning message alerting them that the info will be submitted unencrypted and asks if they want to continue or cancel.

  • Hi Dave, the new version of the application is adjusted to secure browsing at the moment (this is now a requirement for all applications) so if you’re using secure browsing and add the app to your fan page, you won’t get any more warning messages.

    Unfortunately you can’t do this via our app – as it only allows you to create a custom tab with a form and some text. But if you do want to include a video or in fact anything else you want, you can create your own iFrame tab – using any of the free apps available such as e.g.:

    http://apps.facebook.com/iframeshq/?ref=ts

    and a multitude of others and simply copy and paste the web form code from your GetResponse account just as you would do it on a “regular” website, including any other HTML code you want on your tab.

    Hi Ketil – it’s where all the other apps are, below the cover photo, on the right. Unfortunately some of the apps are hidden from view but you can change their position (only the position for the photos is fixed) and bring the app to the top. Unfortunately Facebook removed the option of selecting the default landing tab.

  • Helpful tips but I have noticed something, with the recent Facebook Page timeline roll-out, I don’t think we can use this app with our pages any more. I have tried to use it but did not work. Please help with your suggestions.

    Hi, The app can still be used and works just as well – what’s changed though is where it appears on your fan page – once you’ve added it to your fan page, you’ll find it where all the other tabs are on your page – which is not on the left as before, but under your timeline cover photo. It might be hidden, though – so you need to unfold all the hidden tabs with the arrow icon (you’ll find some more instructions here: http://blog.getresponse.com/social-savvy-email-marketer-facebook-timeline-part-1.html – and then click it and proceed as before.

    Are you experiencing any particular problems with the app? If so, please describe them here and I’ll be glad to help further and provide any instructions necessary.

    Hi, this is what you see as an admin of the page – others will see the correct sign up form. Can you check with an account that isn’t an admin and let me know?

    You can remove the app from within Facebook – the shortest way is to go to your Account settings, choose “Apps” on the left, find GetResponse app and remove it.

    Hi Aitza – the tabs are now not on the left but just below your cover photo, to the right. I can see the Sign up tab is there – but it’s hidden from view at the moment because you have some other tabs displayed at the moment. To make it visible, click on the little arrow just on the right of your “Videos” tab icon and you’ll see the Sign up tab is next. To bring it to view, you’ll have to swap it with another tab (unfortunately Facebook allows only four to be displayed). Hope this helps and let me know if you have any other questions.

    Yes, you see the setting page as the admin of the page and the GR account, your fans will see the form just as you see it in preview.

    Hi Hugo, are you the admin of the page you’re trying to add the app to – and if so, in what role? (You can check this in the settings of the page – click “Edit page” at the top and then “Admin Roles” – perhaps your role doesn’t allow for adding apps to the page).

    This app does not work period. If it does it should not be so complicated. I am not saying it is Get response fault. Most Facebook apps suck. However, this app should be pulled so that it doesn’t waste people’s time. What’s the point if most people can’t get it to work.

    Thanks Sherrod, and in the meantime, I’ve updated some screenshots in the post (it used the old Facebook page layout so far – sorry, that should’ve been changed some time ago) so maybe this will help too.

    I was going to get around to figuring it later, but now what I’ve come to realize is that you should be logged out of your facebook account in order to see the form. Otherwise you will keep seeing the sign into Get-response form. What i did was use another account, then I clicked the sign up form and was redirected to a page with the form. So it does work, but I can’t see it unless I log out of the account. People should know that. Otherwise they will assume that it’s not working. Anyhow, thanks. Do you think there is a way to put a logo in the tab?

    Hi Sherrod, yes, that’s exactly the case and thanks, we’ll look at what we could do to make it clearer for the users. Unfortunately you can’t add images to the tab itself but you could add it to your sign up form instead, if that’s an option for you.

    If you want more design options, you could also try our Landing Page Creator – you can design a landing page just the way you want to and publish it on your Facebook page too, and it will include a sign up form – so that’s a more customizable alternative. http://www.getresponse.com/features/landing-page-creator.html

    I’m getting an error message too, 502 Bad Gateway. it happens when I’m at the screen where after clicking the link on your page to the sign up form, you see the Get Response page then select from the drop down list the form you want to use. You then customize your message. I’ve done it and click the save button and then it gives me that message.

    Hi Carla, it looks you’re either not an admin of any Facebook page or you your role as admin doesn’t allow adding apps to the page. Would either be the case?
    To add the form to your Facebook page you need to be an admin of it (and it can’t be your personal profile, it must be a business page).

    Hi Laura, you need to be an admin of at least one Facebook page to be able to add a sign up form to it – you can’t add it to your personal profile.

    Hi Revvell, this is because Facebook page admins see the “inside” of the app while all the other people will see the sign up form just as you set it up (and when I click the link you provided, I can see the working sign up form). To see what it looks like, use the Preview link after you log in to the app.

But while using trial version I understand that how easy they look but the system doesn’t work easily at all.   • I asked a friend who’s not an administrator of the page to tell me how the form appeared for her but the tab doesn’t even appear on the page when loaded with her Facebook account. A cache refresh doesn’t solve it. Any ideas?

    Avoid 502 Bad Gateway -by Pressing on the Mouse longer then 100 counts then slowly release the click at the mouse…Allow more time for the System to flow through with processing. Be patient with slow machine capability to cope with heavy job.

    Right now, the app is extremely raw. Users of the app should be allowed to add photos/youtube videos etc. Will there be such functionality soon or are there ways to add more “content”/messaging?

    I found it extremely frustrating to get this app up and running. I finally had to download Firefox to my computer and do it through there. it worked well then, so I suggest that even though they say it works on Chrome, just go right to Firefox and don’t waste a whole afternoon like I did.

  • I set this up a year ago without any problems, but know I want to change the form and though it shows in the drop down list and even says saved, it does not change. Even the custom text will edit, but not save changes. I tried several browsers – Chrome, IE, Firefox – all same problem. Frustrating.

    Hi, unfortunately this cannot be done in a linear way that you’re asking about. You can use style in html to move the text around, but there is no way to move the web form to be next to actual text.
