The expectation here is that Ohio State will win, and the Buckeyes will keep marching undefeated toward Michigan, while Penn State will keep beating the teams it’s supposed to beat and losing to the teams it isn’t.
That’s how it’s been for James Franklin in Happy Valley, where he’s 0-7 against Ohio State, Michigan, and Michigan State. Now that the Spartans have faded , the Buckeyes are Franklin’s last shot to beat someone substantial this year, at least until a bowl.
Ohio State could suffer an upset this week and still move forward. As long as the Buckeyes don’t lose any other games, a win against Michigan would still surely put them in the Big Ten’s championship game, and a win there would get them to the College Football Playoff. All their marbles aren’t in this basket.
The No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes barely escaped the Wisconsin Badgers last week with a 30-23 overtime victory after overcoming a 10-point halftime deficit. This week, it’s on to face the unranked Penn State Nittany Lions in another prime-time matchup on the road against a Big Ten opponent.
Ohio State has won four in a row at Beaver Stadium, its last loss coming in 2005. Since then, Penn State has gone 11-25 versus Top 25 teams. In that same span, the Nittany Lions have lost four times to an Ohio State team ranked in the top five. The last time these teams played in Happy Valley, the Buckeyes won in double overtime 31-24.
Penn State is still looking for a marquee win during James Franklin’s tenure. He is 0-7 against Ohio State, Michigan and Michigan State and the Nittany Lions are 0-9 against top-five 5 teams in the last 10 years.
