I have a bunch of free time, and I'm not even finished after several months. But to be fair, I always slack off. Maybe I'm just trying too hard when I'm trying at all. Did you write down vocab anywhere or did you just go through the course and try to just remember whatever you learned?

I didn't write anything down, though I did keep this document in another tab to help me remember the correlatives, the thing I remember the least well. I honestly probably only retained maybe 1/2 of the vocab off the bat, but that's what the "strengthening skills" activity is for.

The first user to finish the tree when it came out last year did it in less than 2 days. She gave a video interview to Chuck Smith (who contributed to the Duolingo course) and it was surprisingly understandable! Search for it on YouTube, I'm too lazy to do it on my phone.

How many hours would you say you put into it? Do you feel like it'll help your learning spanish? Do you have previous language learning experience?

I'm asking because I'm learning Spanish as well first language I've seriously studied, on the cusp of A2 but I've read some things about using Esperanto and similarly I could see myself enjoying a change of pace, just trying to determine if it's worth it

I probably put 24-30 hours in over those 5 days. I had no previous Esperanto experience and had never even seen/heard an example of the words before. I've had about 3.5 years of formal Spanish classes (three in HS, one semester of college Spanish), and I've dabbled in attempting to learn Russian (through 1/3 of a college class that I had to drop and some self-study).

Turns out there are a good number of similarities to both languages in Esperanto. Many of the words that I knew right of the bat are cognates of either Spanish, Russian, or English words. Any word that I didn't know I would say aloud to cement it, and my boyfriend remarked how most of those are French-based. The grammar is also pretty familiar as an English native, but I feel the same about Spanish grammar.

I have recently felt as though I am plateauing in my study of Spanish, so picking up a new but similar language was a definite ego booster. I'm not sure how much Esperanto will help moving forward in Spanish, though I've seen similar claims about Esperanto helping people pick up other languages faster. Even after this short period, I've noticed that my recall for Spanish words that are cognates with Esperanto words is much better.

Might be because of many other things, like the ego boost... but I've thought that maybe it gives a better understanding of grammar?

(I had a german teacher that went through different forms for words in accusative (and davite?), but that didn't really explain when it was used..).

The link there is to a list of observational studies done comparing Esperanto with other languages concerning usage and understanding over years of study, as well as using Esperanto to help people learn other European languages faster. I haven't read any in depth yet, but it seems to be implied that the grammar is somewhat influential on the latter's issue's conclusions.

Either way, it sure helped me understand cases that aren't ever directly addressed in native English (or non-native Spanish) education.
