日本時間で10月22日早朝、書きかけたブログを、今日こそは塩漬けにせずに何とか仕上げてアップしようと、熱い紅茶を入れてキーボードをかちゃかちゃやっていたときのことだ。

Twitterの画像が表示されない。正確に言うと、Twitter Cardの画像が表示されない。ただし猫写真は表示されている（左図。クリックで原寸表示）。さすがここは俺たちの古典的インターネッツ、猫写真は何があっても生き残るのだろう……というのは冗談だが、「一部だけ表示されなくなっているが、きっと何かのバグで、すぐに回復するのだろう」と思っていた。

だが、自分のツイートを埋め込もうと当該のツイートを表示させて所定の操作をしても、Embedのコードが取得できない。こちらのPCのせいかもしれない。そもそももう眠くて頭もうろうとしているので精査する余裕はないが、インターネット・キャッシュを削除してみたがだめだ。自分のTwitterのページは問題なく表示されているので、Twitterそのものが落ちているわけではないのだろう。だからすぐにTwitterで "twitter" と検索してみた。笑い事ではない。午前3時半少し前のことだ。

そうしてすぐに見つかったのが、The Wrapの下記記事である。

Twitterだけではない。ほかに、SpotifyやAmazon, CNNも落ちているという（ここで、自分で確認するためにそのときは立ち上げてなかったSpotifyのアプリを立ち上げてみたが、日本時間22日の4時台には問題なく使えている。今はSpotifyの「アコースティック・コンセントレーション」のプレイリストを聞いているが、これはすばらしい）。Amazonが落ちるってすごくない?

Much of the internet went down on Friday, following two attacks on the servers of a major domain host. Twitter, Spotify, Amazon and CNN were reportedly among the sites affected.

The company which suffered the hacks, Dyn, first reported around 4 a.m. PT that it had “began monitoring and mitigating a DDoS attack against our Dyn Managed DNS infrastructure.” The initial attack primarily affected internet users on the east coast, and the company claimed it had been resolved just over two hours later.

Around 9 a.m. PT, the company reported that it was “monitoring and mitigating” another DDoS attack, which affected services for users on both coasts.

“This was not your everyday DDos attack,” Kyle York, Dyn’s chief strategist, told the New York Times. “The nature and source of the attack is still under investigation. We will be updating our users as soon as we learn more.”

ともあれ、私はそのとき、ブログの記事を書き上げようとしていたわけで、とりあえずはそちらの作業に戻って少し様子を見ることにした。DDoS攻撃を受けて大変なときに、無理に埋め込みコードを表示させようとしなくてもいいんだよ、みつを。というわけで地の文をかちゃかちゃと書いていたのだが、30分ほどでだいたい作業が終わってしまい、ツイートのエンベッドを再度試みた。が、Twitterの画面からでは依然、ダメだ。

代替手段としてSeesaa（このブログ）の投稿画面からTwitterの埋め込みをやってみたところ、それは正常に……いや、微妙に正常ではないが（アバターが表示されなくなっている）、何とか動作はしているようだ（日本時間10月22日午前4時15分ごろ）。



1つ埋め込んでみよう。……なんてキャプチャを取りながら文章を書いているうちに、こちらも完全に反応しなくなってしまった（日本時間10月22日午前4時20分ごろ）。



こうなる前にTwilogは「新規ツイートを取得」で最新の状態にしておいたので、関連情報は手動でコピペしよう。

というわけで、ガーディアンが見られないのは困ったが、BBCは生きていた。妙に楽観的な見出しの記事がそこにはあった。

Briefly じゃないよね。ここでbrieflyと呼んでいるものは、確かに時間的には短かったかもしれないけれど、それがrepeatedlyなんだよね。

BBCの報道には「BBC語」みたいなのがある。Brieflyなどの副詞を駆使してplay downするのはその一例で、そういうのが出てくると、ほかの報道も確認しなきゃ、って思うのがよく訓練されたヲチャ。。。なんだけど、この状態でウェブをあちこち見て回るとか、ちょっと恐ろしいのでやめときます。

Twitter, Spotify, Reddit, Soundcloud and several other sites have been affected by two web attacks.

All the firms are customers of a company called Dyn, which they use to help users find their sites online.

In quick succession on Friday, Dyn has been swamped during two attacks that have made the sites of its customers hard to reach.

It is not clear who is behind the data deluges or why Dyn has been hit.

The first DDoS attack started early on Friday morning in the US and mostly affected more in the east of the country. The initial impact of the attack made some sites harder to reach as queries sent to locate them took longer to process.

Reddit, Twitter, Etsy, Github, Soundcloud, Spotify and many others were all reported as being hard to reach by users throughout the attack, which lasted about two hours.

Access to sites such as Paypal, Pinterest and Tumblr, as well as some cable firms, was also reported as being intermittent.

A second attack started later on Friday, which Dyn said used the same tactics as the first. A similar list of Dyn customers became harder to visit as a result of the attack.

Soon after the second attack was reported, the US Department of Homeland Security said it was looking into "all possible causes" of the attacks on Dyn.

BBC記事、「なぁに、たいしたことはない」っていう調子なのは、見出しだけですね。やっぱりBBC Newsの個別の記者ではなく、ウェブの編集をやってる人たちの感覚が、ちょっと……。先日のこの件もあったばかりで、どうも気になりすぎるバイアスが、あまりにも強すぎる。

The Department of Homeland Security has begun an investigation into the DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attack, the Guardian confirmed.

The incident took offline some of the most popular sites on the web, including Netflix, Twitter, Spotify, Reddit, CNN, PayPal, Pinterest and Fox News – as well as newspapers including the Guardian, the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.

Amazon’s web services division, one of the world’s biggest cloud computing companies, also reported an outage that lasted several hours on Friday morning.

Doug Madory, director of internet analysis at Dyn, said he was not sure if the outages at Dyn and Amazon were connected.

“We provide service to Amazon, but theirs is a complex network so it is hard to be definitive about causality,” he said.

Amazon was not available for comment.
