It isn't a native PC program. They stream the console version to your computer. It doesn't run on your hardware. You can't customize anything. You can't mod it. You can't access the ini file. You can't change the resolution, you cannot change the framerate.

It is playing a console game on a computer monitor. It is not PC gaming.

origin access is actually not that bad of a deal if you happen to want to play the games in it for a shorter ammount of time

I have ea access which is pretty much origin access on xbox and battlefront is coming in december for us so its probably the same for pc, my pc is bad for newer gaming so i dont see the point of subbing to it and only use origin for the sims and bf3/4

It's obviously not for everyone, and obviously making the Ps4 backwards compatible would be better...

On the other other hand, you need to have top tier internet just to make it playable, a PS subscription which you might not have or ever want, and you have zero control over any graphical settings or the framerate or anything. This isn't PC gaming, we're not in the mood to be straight up lied to. Playing a game run and rendered on a ps4 and streamed to a PC is not and will never be PC gaming, and ign needs to be up front about that before the population of retards eats this up and gives them the idea that this is a good substitute for PC gaming and they can get away with it more often. The game is not really on XB1 or PS4. PSNOW runs from a ps3 somewhere and XB1 backwards comp is an emulator, if rock* had to change anything to run that game on the new consoles most likely the game would not be available at all.

I imagine Halo isn't hitting PC anytime soon unfortunately (despite H5: Forge running absolutely beautifully).

Forge is supposedly getting a server browser at some point in the future, so at the very least you can play Forge/customs on PC.

i would be ok with some console exclusives if consoles actually were able to get to the performance of pcs but since they dont i dont see why games have to be limited to crappy consoles.

and its even worse when games are locked to a specific console, i mean i could own 1 console sure thats not too big of a deal but owning 2 or 3 of them? fuck that.. and i dont think the majority of console players buys 2 consoles they probably buy 1 stick with that brand like playstation or they get a xbox and stick with xbox so it would be better for developers and customers to be able to get the games for whatever console they got and preferrably pc too.

It would be great for consumers, sure, but bad for the hardware manufacturers. I mean, they know most people only buy one console, and so they need to give you a compelling reason to buy their box. Exclusive games serve that purpose well.

Sorry to be harsh but yes, it is about money. It is also about providing customer satisfaction for their consumers. You won't get any customers, or keep any customers without an attractive product. Content is king. By making partnerships with dev houses that they see potential in, they get a chance to own some of that content. Welcome to Business 101.

The best thing to be said about the gameplay is that the shooting mechanics were alright. Literally half the gameplay is you walking through empty, static environments.

If I were a developer I would have to get a dump truck full of money from Sony or MS to literally cut out 2/3 of the market share. I don't get it. If I made a game I would want to reach every possible consumer on every possible platform. PC sales are so much easier than console anyway, we don't even have to go to the store. It is so much easier to be an impulse buy and therefor far more sales than what can be achieved on console. Not to mention not having to pay the overhead of printing discs, packaging, and distribution.

Take it from somebody who had a 360/PS3/Wii. Invest more into PC gaming. The PS4 Scorpio will probably have features you want - like proper 1080p/60fps gaming @ around $500.... or you could just buy a new GPU for the PC and run 4k.

Honestly dude, they'll re-release Uncharted 4 on PS5. It won't hurt to skip a console generation.

i am going to build a new pc in a month or so but its the fact that some games are console exclusive just like halo that i dont have access to and if i can get a used xbone in a year or 2 from now with the master chief collection that seems kinda worth to me and they probably will never release bloodborne/halo on pc anyway.

I could pick up an Xbone, PS4, and new rig. I'm not super tight on finances but the thing is, once I get it and play it, I'll find out that it's just another game. And the hardware itself isn't anything special. And if the games are good enough, they'll probably get ported later on.

PS3 actually had worthwhile features like B/C, a bluray player and online and the hardware was relatively decent.

PS4/Xbone dropped BC so they can charge you even more for $60 re-releases. Everyone has bluray / online streaming 1080p now. Plus you need to install games now AND pay for online. I realized I was paying for a gimped and closed ecosystem PC. It's never been this frustrating before dude. It's like paying for a smartphone every year.

Umm they where 'alright' during the later PS2/Xbox days and early to mid X360/PS3 days. Not 'great' but at least their reviews during this time went into detail over many aspects of the game, might not always agree with ultimate rating but at least had thought behind it.

Since then most of their major reviews seem like it was written up during a lunch break with the first things that come to mind. Ever since they tried becoming a 'faster read' like much of what internet sites did after magazines sales and popularity started falling, and then they had their whole push towards the end of X360/PS3 on ignoring how outdated they where and then how the next consoles will be SUPER POWERFUL machines that sony and MS where spending YEARS developing.

The biggest joke of a thing they did was around when the PS4/XBO was being launched they put up new rules on the front page article with 'No trolling and fanboy stuff' and how it was this was a good move. And I agree that is good move....

Not even 2 days later the next front page article was them taking a polling on "Xbox One vs PS4 which one do you think is better!". I mean HOLY SHIT, that is the ultimate sign that it is just a bunch of independent writers putting up whatever they want to get hits. Various writing publications have been moving more and more towards decentralizing (more independent writers and less 'team efforts') which I can get from a business point why, but at least have someone reasonable have the final key on what gets front page and don't do shit like that.

Edit: Since then they have just stayed grounded in that they love baiting console fanboy trolling and will do whatever it takes to keep it happening on their site. Heck they have a 'wiki' on various game resolution and fps and instead of just pipe-lining Digital Foundry information to it they had it be user edited for months (if not YEARS) turning it into a joke.

I know alot of PC players hate this, but I for one am loving the play anywhere. Im a huge Forza fan (and a car guy) and all my "car friends" are playing on X1. Its been a ton of fun playing Horizon 3 with them. The game had some issues on launch but the latest patch has made it run amazing for me. Even had one of my console friends come play in my sim rig and he was absolutely astounded at how much better it looked at 1440p/60fps. Hes been wanting to build a PC for awhile and I think that pushed him over the edge haha.

Damn, this had me searching for an original Red Dead Redemption PC release until I reread it and realized it was just a crappy streaming service.

It seems kind of dumb to ignore my machine's wonderful hardware and instead pay a subscription fee to stream a game from the internet at lower resolution, poorer quality, and worse performance.

Here's a better model. Let me download the game and play it on my own hardware. Charge me a flat monthly fee or by the hour, but include a great selection of games. I wouldn't even mind if there were some premium games with a higher hourly rate. I'd try the game and see if it was something I would sink enough hours into to justify whatever the asking price is for a complete purchase.

/u/GabeNewellBellevue can you make this happen? I know Steam has a 2 hour refund policy, but I don't like using that except in extreme circumstances where something simply won't run.

Maybe it's the psychology of a refund. If I buy a game, I'm committed and I need a good reason to refund it. The decision is made and the money's gone. That's probably why you position this as a 'refund' instead of 'two free hours on any game before you get charged'.

Instead, I want to give you money to let me try new things without the commitment of a full purchase. I'd even pay in advance to create a balance and have that charged by the hour, within my control. If you want to be super nice, you could deduct the rental from the purchase price, or just give me the game once I pay for a certain number of hours in it.

Sadly, I don't know how well this would work. I suspect that a lot of the success for some game companies is due to people paying full price for games they'll never play. If the game price was set according to how long people are engaged for, then the price of a complete purchase would probably go up for a lot of games because people will get bored and abandon their games before they ever reach a point where a sale takes place. To make the 'same' money on a game, they'd have to charge more by the hour or increase the outright purchase cost of the game to subsidize these abandonments.

This might make discoverability much better, though. When there's very little difference in cost between playing one game for an hour vs another, users can spread their money to different games to see what they like. The barrier for indie companies to potentially collect triple A fees is lower. If they keep people engaged better, they make more. This influx would improve their ability to produce better games and more engaging content. Compare this to some large companies who publish games with triple A prices but have no real quality to them. Some of these will rely on one or two unique features or some marketing gimmicks to secure the initial purchase of fairly poor games, but they still collect the full game price. They won't be able to ride their gimmick to the bank forever, but it can keep them rich for a few bad releases if they throw a good one into the mix once in a while.

The point is, that large upfront price rewards large companies for producing crap, and penalizes indie developers who need to set a lower price to attract people to their otherwise awesome games. If we start paying game companies by the hour (within reason), we'll see much better results from them.

Sadly, I imagine this model would only work if there was substantial buy-in, which would require convincing many of those large companies who benefit from higher upfront costs that they should give that up for a rental model.
