I gave our (not at all overweight 50 lb.) dog a mini milk chocolate peanut butter cup and posted a clip of him gently taking it out of my hand with his lips so his teeth wouldn't graze my skin. It was a cute video, just meant to show how gentle he is with treats even when it's something as insanely good as a peanut butter cup. He savored it too, he didn't gulp it down.

Left for a few hours and came back to a ton of comments about "animal abuse" and how I needed to rush him to the ER. I commented that milk chocolate really isn't that big of a deal, especially for a bigger dog and especially in small doses and posted an article. Nope I'm a horrible dog dad and shouldn't be allowed to have animals. It was a public post so their wacky friends weighed in on it too.

These are the same people who freaked out when I gave him a raw chicken wing because "omg chicken bones will slice his innards apart you're killing your dog!!!!!!"... COOKED bones are dangerous. OK, and drumsticks aren't the safest thing either but this was a wing.

I wish you could just talk about your dog and share stuff without people treating you like you're Hitler.

Edit: It was one. mini. peanut. butter. cup. He doesn't get junk food, he gets EVO and occasionally raw hearts and other good things as treats. I gave him a single tiny peanut butter cup (which is almost all peanut butter!) because it's by far his favorite treat (even though he only gets it once in a blue moon) and wanted to show how gentle he is when he takes his favorite treat. It's not my fault it's his favorite, either, I'm not the one who started giving them to him. But sure, go ahead and crucify me when there are people who actually mistreat their dogs.

Edit: I didn't say a peanut butter cup is healthy. My point was that IT WILL NOT KILL HIM OR EVEN HARM HIM and people were trying to say I should have him confiscated. The only valid complaint you could possibly have about a mini peanut butter cup is that it's filling his stomach with something that does not benefit his health, which is a perfectly valid point, but the problem is it's extremely small and isn't going to affect his appetite. If I was giving him remotely significant amounts of junk food, by all means, go after me.

I can't think of a single commercial dog food that hasn't been linked to the deaths of dogs. Even TOTW and EVO have allegedly killed dogs and there have been lawsuits against them. Vets are taught to push commercial food and some are sponsored; this isn't a conspiracy theory. Which is fine, raw diets are hard to get right, so commercial food is a good choice unless you're thoroughly devoted to research. I do feed commercial food (EVO) but anything is "potentially dangerous." I'm sure raw chicken has killed dogs; I doubt it's killed anywhere near the number of dogs even some high-end commercial foods have.

Got a question for you guys... something to think about. Yes large amounts of milk chocolate can hurt and potentially kill a dog. Too much tuna can hurt and kill a child. Do you also go nuts when a parent gives a kid a tuna fish sandwich? I hope so or you're a huge hypocrite.
