Heh I got high speed Internet in 2000 when I moved out on my own, we would have download parties where everyone would think of like any song ever and we would download them, I couldn't keep up with the download speed.

Made good money burning mix discs for people but it was definitely a pain in the ass when word got out they I had both high speed Internet and a CD burner. Everyone was forever giving me lists of songs to download and burn to cd for them. It got to the point where I'd spend hours every night after work downloading songs and burning them to disc. One person requested an entire CD of nothing but Lady Marmalade over and over. Easiest 5 bucks I ever made, but I felt dirty afterwards.

How the fuck can a game have a 45GB big update?

[–]danielsamuels4770K / 8GB / 1060 3GB / posix_ on Steam 77ポイント78ポイント  (14子コメント)

It's all the game engine code that's required to push a beastly 30 FPS.

[–]FireHazard11 52ポイント53ポイント  (13子コメント)

To be fair, Halo 5 is locked to 60 fps. But on the other hand that's the reason you can't play it split screen, the physics are based on a constant 60 fps and the Xbone isn't strong enough to maintain 60 fps during split screen play.

[–]PATXSThe mustard race ! 22ポイント23ポイント  (3子コメント)

i'm starting to have a feeling that most Halo games have physics tied to FPS. i remember when people got halo online(on PC) to run above 60FPS, at first it looked fine in terms of speed but then it quickly became clear that all the physics were weird above 60.

[–]pb7280i7-5820k @4.5GHz & Fury X | i5-2500k @4.7GHz & 2x R9 290X 2ポイント3ポイント  (2子コメント)

Well Halo 5 engine is running on PC now and has no problem going below 60fps. AFAIK though you can't go above it

[–]PATXSThe mustard race ! 7ポイント8ポイント  (1子コメント)

yeah all Halo games i've played have no problem going below their target framerate.

[–]SisterPhister 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Low framerate shouldn't affect tickrate. But high framerate shouldn't either.

[–]angrydeucei5@3.1GHz, 24GB RAM, GTX 970, Samsung Evo 840 SSD x2 9ポイント10ポイント  (6子コメント)

Why is it that games tie their physics to frame rate in the first place? It seems like a really strange thing to do. Is it the engines themselves that require this or laziness on the part of devs?

[–]TDAmeritrade48 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

It's easier to develop and program the physics to be timed based on frame rate.

The only type of game where developers always lock physics to frame rate and it's a good thing is in fighting games, because you have to study frames in which hit boxes are active and such.

[–]SuperTurtle24EVGA FTW 1070 / i5-4590 CPU @3.30GHz / 20GB RAM 5ポイント6ポイント  (2子コメント)

Much easier and less time consuming to apply events to frame rate (well technically ticks, but the amount of ticks you can perform is based on your framerate) then it is to right completely separate the physics events and run them along side the game.

[–]Falt_ssb 1ポイント2ポイント  (0子コメント)

Also less of a need to separate them on console where you're developing for a set slate of hardware. On PC people play on all kinds of framerates, especially for shooters, so it would be disastrous

[–]ProfitOfRegret 9ポイント10ポイント  (0子コメント)

IMO it's forgivable for H5, the game was only around 55GB at release and they've added ~40GB of content for free since then. New maps, armours, forge items etc.

It would be nice if you could choose to download this new content instead of being forced, but then you'd have the problem of splitting multiplayer playlists between those with and without the new maps (one of the main reasons they wanted new content to be free to begin with)

[–]wagglyteff 16ポイント17ポイント  (5子コメント)

I remember when I was like 14-15 I had a 5gb data cap per month on this shitty verizon internet dongle thing, and it was the only internet I had. I remember playing Nexon games downloading the launcher, and pausing the download right before the cap would max. I always timed it so the next day it would reset, and then I would start up the download again, and do whatever was remaining. Once the download is done playing the game doesn't use much data. You can forget all about watching youtube videos though.

[–]MindlessElectronsCorsair 600T | MSI GeForce GTX 960 OC | AMD FX 6100 5ポイント6ポイント  (1子コメント)

I had that Verizon dongle too. Whenever the internet went out you'd do the Nintendo cartridge method of taking it out and putting it back in, then you had to watch the little circles in the software for it to spin and see if they gave the CONNECTED symbol.

[–]wagglyteff 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

Very annoying. With the Forza Horizon patches it's quicker and easier for me to redownload the entire game at my university campus and install it on my main PC with the download instead of arranging to take my main PC somewhere to download the update which is only 4% of the game's size

Data caps are only getting more common. Comcast is rolling out 1TB caps for most of their customers by November 1st. I've been tracking my monthly usage since 2015, and it well exceeds that cap. I'm looking forward to competition in 5-10 years.

I think I have a 1TB data cap and when I asked what would happen if I go over it they said nothing, no throttling nothing, they will just send me an email asking me not to do it again and if it keeps happening they will start to offer me plans with bigger data caps. I don't even understand why I have one/

I can't imagine being a console gamer these days. PCMR or not, we're all gamers at heart. There was once a time when playing on a PS2 or a PS1 didn't make you want to weep in the corner, and it made just as much sense to play games on consoles.

What the flying fuck do consoles have going for them now? This may be a biased place to ask, but honestly. I once thought bout a PS4 for a media gaming device WITH FRIENDS, you know, the whole idea of a console?

"Wanna play co-op with a buddy? HAHAHAH BUY A SECOND COPY MOTHERFUCKER. We support 4 players on this console, but the game developers sure as fuck won't!

Wanna play online with your buddy, ok, pay us...every month, or every year. Why? Fuck you that's why.

Wanna have an effortless plug and play experience? Fuck you up the ass consumers! What did you think you were going to do, play your games the second you open them up on Christmas morning? We REQUIRE you update the console AND the games! Doesn't matter if you want to play it alone in single player mode!

You can at least be safe knowing your console will last 6 or so years playing all the neatest, latest games without ever needing new hardware like a PC! HAHA, JUST KIDDING! We found out it'd be more profitable to cut corners like fucking mad! You'll now experience sub par graphics the day you open the box! We don't innovate our consoles to out perform the other, we make them exactly the same so developers will release their games for both of us!

Now bend over my loyal legion of supporters who stayed with us since 1995! We're going to make you love us!" Sony Exec.

[–]nolaredditor 135ポイント136ポイント  (28子コメント)

That's why I've never strayed from Nintendo's hardware. Insert disc and play. Even with Wii U software getting updates you have the option to just launch the game and let the update download in the background while you play.

Nintendo seem to understand better than Microsoft and Sony that the one strength of consoles over PCs is local multiplayer; for single player and online experiences (the kind that get pushed on Xbox and PS4 a lot), PCs blow consoles out of the water, but they've always struggled with the whole "sit down on the couch with some buddies and play Mario Kart" side of gaming which Nintendo tends to focus on more with their first party games.

[–]___Stevei5 6600K | MSI 290X | HTC VIVE 27ポイント28ポイント  (12子コメント)

While I agree that is what Nintendo is great at (Wii U the only console that still gets any use in my house) PC has a great selection of local multiplayer "party" games if you look for them.

Gang Beasts, Stikbold, Mega Coin Squad and Screencheat are a few of our favourites.

[–]BiggerThanATrex 3ポイント4ポイント  (0子コメント)

Some of my friends like the game so much that they've said they won't let me over if I don't bring my laptop. I'm fairly certain it's the only reason they still invite me over. It destroyed my friendships but it's a fun game.

...and all the Lego games, Rayman Legends/Origins, plus: every gamecube and Wii game (via Dolphin), and soon every Wii U game (major ones like Super Mario 3D World are playable via Cemu already, and it gets better every month).

It's because so many xbox and ps games are completely broken at launch. They need the day one patch to make it playable. Nintendo actually has a solid product at release.

[–]Zoidburger_i5-6600K, R9 Fury Nitro, 16GB DDR4-2400, MSI Z170-A PRO 72ポイント73ポイント  (49子コメント)

What do they have going for them? Money. They pay for games, season passes, DLC, etc, etc. If a game was hyped up enough, they would certainly pay upwards for $200 for it pre-ordered and brand new. Thus they get exclusives, due to the assload of "game-tax" Sony and Microsoft put on games (why they're more expensive on consoles in the first place), enabling bought exclusives. Then, when games like Red Dead 2 are announced for just consoles, you know that console gamers are about to be exploited for DLC, multiple releases (you bet it's going to be re-released on the next-gen consoles), and in-game money cards. We probably won't see the game until 2019, if at all, simply because we're (on average) more stingy about buying games, whereas console players just don't have that chance.

[–]greatbawlsofire 50ポイント51ポイント  (27子コメント)

Hey. Console gamer here. By and large its 2 things. 1) What systems are our friends using, if they all jumped to PC, I'd be there with them. 2) Exclusives: Was big into Halo/Bungie, now destiny. Love Battlefield, but can't justify building a rig (though I'd love to) just to have a Battlefield rig, which is what it would be.

There's also this "perception" of value like when you trade up on a phone. You can sell the old one, make a little bit of it back, and it doesn't "feel" like you're spending as much. Lots of console gamers like the feeling of a shiny new thing every few years filled with a bunch of features we'll use once. But all this is just perceived value, and I think most of us will acknowledge that PC gaming is the long run cost savings leader, but I don't think most console gamers would get the same psychological boost from swapping a graphics card as they would a shiny new console that's 40% smaller. You guys have a great community here and fun to lurk in.

This boggles my mind. I mean I get it, but holy crap one of the BEST things about PC is seeing how much better things run after an upgrade, or how much higher you can set your settings (if you're not already UltraMax).

[–]greatbawlsofire 12ポイント13ポイント  (7子コメント)

I think you're getting the message, but missing the important part. It's a status thing. I can't walk in your house, look at your rig and tell you've got 3x GTX 1080s without walking over to the case, and looking in. But you can tell if someone's got the new Xbox One S by a quick glance from across the living room. I doubt most console players care about objective best performance. I don't. I think for most of them it's about "ease of use/setup", "Will it play the exclusive I want?", and "will people know when they walk in that I had $400 to drop on basically the same console I already have in a smaller form factor?".

[–]TripFire357 26ポイント27ポイント  (0子コメント)

But if everyone is waiting for everyone else to switch, no one switches.....

You're playing games online. You make friends in minutes. I play overwatch with the same 4-8 people every night. Two months ago I never knew these people existed, now they are lovable idiots I spend countless hours with daily.

[–]lilnomad 8ポイント9ポイント  (6子コメント)

Yup playing with your friends and talking in party chat is pretty much everything. And moments like last night, I would just chat and switch my input to TV to watch Blue Jays vs Indians while we were waiting for a game. I'm not ever going to connect a PC to my tv so I can sit on the couch and play video games. I would rather just hit the Xbox button, then on the console, put on my headset, join a party, and game for the night.

Thanks for the insightful answer. See, I never got into consoles. Have been PC my whole life due to just having the systems, as well as having friends' houses to go to to get my console fix. PS2 was amazing back in the day. Nowadays, the convience and wonder for me has just disapppeared, especially due to a need to pay for online, as well as just having all PC friends (was even able to convert my roommate). I do understand that friends is a big factor, but as for why games are frequently console exclusive, it's simply because you guys will pay more for games and subscriptions. All in all, it just depends on what works best for you.

Yeah, that's very true. I'm sure not every console gamer is like that, but...

If I had to guess, I'd say console gamers primarily are teens, the age group 13-19 with a LOT more buying power since they aren't typically paying for much on their own. To really narrow it down, at least for me, when I was 13 I had a lot of games being purchased for me. Once I hit 15, I was able to do odd jobs to make cash and keep that cash for games/computer etc. Now, I'm 26 and I need to save as much I can, so I buy 90% of my games during steam sales unless it's a MUST have.

I think console gamers are much more likely to not only spend more money, but spend it repeatedly for similar games(COD series, sport titles, etc), or even the same game as you said.

I dunno, I don't know many gamers my age in person, so I can't say. But as a teen my then best friend was a console gamer who's parents were loaded. He got all the DLC, had the Xbox 360, and I was just blown away and baffled as to why the hell any of that was appealing. I was looking from the perspective of value and worth, he was looking at it as "because why not I want it." No matter the cost it was.

[–]krymz1n 18ポイント19ポイント  (8子コメント)

Whales are seldom teens.

If you could characterize console players it wouldn't be "teen" it would be "most everybody"

Edit for example fully 30% of people 50+ own a console, while ownership rates are the same in the 18-29 and 30-49 cohorts

[–]Pantzzzzless 1ポイント2ポイント  (2子コメント)

Off topic here. Why do they go with 4 out of 10 for stats like this? Is it just for the x/100 percentage convenience? I don't know why it bothers me that it's not 2 out 5.

Nintendo's still pretty solid about "put disc on console, play game." But only Nintendo. I know people barely consider it in the console "family" anymore (at least, you always hear people say "ps4 and xb1" instead of "consoles") but they really just kind of exist as "yep, still just a console."

[–]EarthmeisterIndigo 21ポイント22ポイント  (6子コメント)

This is why the only console I will ever buy will be Nintendo. Want to play local multiplayer? Tap a button on a controller. Want to go online? Set up an account and enjoy. Xenoblade Chronicles X needs graphical improvement? Here is a 15 GB data pack for free. Wii U loads slowly? Here is an update that drastically decreases load times, and has some new features. And to top it all off, here is some of the best customer service that I have used.

People give Nintendo flack for not being with the times, and in some respects, they need to improve. But with the way the Xbone and Pisspoor are, I think Nintendo's on the right track.

[–]OneManGOONsquad 11ポイント12ポイント  (7子コメント)

Just to give you my $0.02, I will not deny PC gaming is far superior, but right now because I have a family with two young kids it's just easier to have a console in front of the TV that they can just put the disk in and the game plays. There's really no troubleshooting beyond that. If we had a PC it'd be fucked it within a week despite what security restrictions I put on it.

So, again I agree PC > console but I'm just sharing why I do console right now.

Edit: before anyone else comments to give me suggestions on what to do, I was just trying to give him perspective on how/why someone would play on consoles. I've obviously weighed all options and I know it sounds crazy to you, but console is better for me and my family especially when I only get time to play for a few hours a week some weeks.

There's no denying having kids changes the face of your gaming reality. You need utmost simplicity, I call it foolproofing. Disk goes in, game goes on. If I had kids, I'd buy an NX in a heartbeat once it comes out (if its decent). Nintendo gets it. Not so sure bout Xbox and PS4 for that, but Nintendo has it down.

every point is so accurate. I remember playing on PC and on the Game Cube and that was awesome. Dedicated architecture made games look great without the PC horse power ( the Game Cube had 44 MB of RAM guys , PS2 32)

Even addopting a shit ton of PC features , Sony was willing to not make money with every PS3 they were selling on release. It was a POWERFUL machine , and , at least on Spain , the cheapest Blue Ray player available.

With PS4/XBONE it just feels they are trying to see how much can they decrease the quality levels while still making a shit ton of money, and it is working just fine for them !!

PS2 and earlier consoles were fantastic, they existed in a time where they genuinely were more powerful than the mid-tier pc systems. Only high end and expensive PCs out performed them and even then they allowed for features that PCs didn't have easy access to with dx8 and earlier.

The ps3 had some decent hardware but was such a paradigm shift that devs only really learned to leverage it by the time the ps4 hit the market. It was also very expensive to manufacture and that showed with its launch price. By then digital distribution on PC was really taking off and the ps3 equivalent was no where near as good. Graphics APIs and engines for PC not only gained the features consoles had with specialist hardware but also started to pioneer new advances in lighting, shadows, physics etc

By the time the ps4 launched the mid and even low level hardware reached a level of performance that really turned things around. The significant performance increase each year also flooded the used market with high end cards at very competitive prices. You no longer needed a large budget to overtake the consoles and even new CPUs had graphics capabilities that allowed for a playable experience thus pushing low level costs down even more. Digital distribution on the PC because a far better option with modern internet speeds, The peripheral market exploded bringing a whole new level of customisability, monitor display tech far outpaced TV advances and a generation had grown up with personal computers per family member instead of a shared family computer.

[–]EtanSivadSpecs/Imgur Here 22ポイント23ポイント  (4子コメント)

where they genuinely were more powerful than the mid-tier pc systems.

No they weren't. That was NEVER seldem the case. What they were, was specialized. The N64 is a great example of this (Or at the very least, the numbers that stick in my head the best.)

The n64 came out in 1996, had a 93mhz CPU, 64 mhz GPU. Compared with Pentiums of the time, the average Pentium chip was about 90 mhz and brand new ones were in the 200~300mhz range.

Here's the thing, the pentium architecture at the time had a 66mhz frontside bus to read/write system ram, while the N64 had a 500mhz fsb. Though the Pentium offered a 64bit channel into memory and the N64 had a 9bit channel. Ultimately, this boiled down to both systems getting a 500 mb/s read write rates, with the N64 having faster switching and a narrower channel.

In practical terms, this meant the N64 was really really good at rapidly pushing data in and out of memory, while computers were better at doing large chunks of data. Drawing in 16.7 million colors to the screen, consoles of the time had a huge edge. But if you wanted raw CPU horsepower to chew through AI or compression or any other work calculation, the PC (Even mid tier ones) are going to be way ahead.

Nintendo pioneered the concept of Lateral thinking with withered technology. Specifically, take processing systems that are established, cheap, and very solid, and build an architecture around that. They make very good reliable (And most importantly FUN) systems. But they were not demonstrably more powerful.

EDIT, there was a brief window where it was the case.

I don't know if you want an actual answer, but I play both my PC and consoles equally.

PC is for when I'm alone and want to play something more hardcore, like CIV V, EU4, Mount & Blade, Elite Dangerous, etc. Unfortunately, almost none of my friends are interested in PC gaming, even though I have built and supported 4-5 of them. They just find it too complicated.

I use my PS4 and Wii U for multiplayer. For local coop nothing beats Smash. For online play, PS4 is easy to setup and get going.

I don't know why it has to be one or the other, I like them both. I have a lot of great memories from both as well, just different.

I think this download thing is an exaggeration. If you bought a new PC you would spend quite a bit of time setting it up out of the box as well.

So last weekend I dusted off my ps4. I've only played 2 games since I purchased it in the year and a half. As an older gamer (33yo) I've really hated middle to end of last gen for these reasons. So I start up my ps4 since I had alone time without my family. It starts updating crap. Then I insert black ops 3 and 13 hours later is when it finishes updating. I took the game and broke it with how pist I was. They sold me a fucking place holder for the game. This is why I can no longer support modern gaming. I called them and fought to cancel my PSN which they told me all sales were final. I got my refund today by the way. I hate being stuck in retro world but we the consumers have let them get away with this.... So I wound up playing my kids Wii u instead.

Its a great one too. It cleanly sums up what I've been feeling / observing / espousing for the pasts five years. The argument of consoles just 'being easier / more convenient" became moot about 25% through the ps3/360 era and has gotten increasingly worse every 6 months or so since then.

I mean I understand this and it makes perfect sense, but games like Fallout 4, The Crew, Dark Souls III and Shadow of Mordor have ridiculous download times for me on PC as well. It took me a whole day to download Fallout 4, even with it pre-loading. The same for Dark Souls III. That could just be chalked up to shitty internet though, so oh well.

[–]EdgeMentalityMentalEdge 28ポイント29ポイント  (4子コメント)

Well those are all simply large games.

The thing is that if you get faster internet on PC your machine will just happily utilize the new speed.

But as Jim states, while the XBone is slightly better, both it and PS4 have choked download speed capacity. Meaning that after a certain point, even if your connection would allow it, the games just wont download faster. And after that, there can be an insane installation process. When has the first time install stuff on steam ever lasted more than a few minutes?

Oh, that's fair. I was down in Texas visiting my brother after I finished college for a week and the internet was god-like compared to here in the Midwest. Definintely. Shitty internet is a lot to do with it. The fact of the matter is, even with all this added effort on consoles, it still is easier for the everyday Joe to set up. They're doing better, but the WiiU still needs to be setup like the others.

On first launch, you have to make a Mii, set up a nintendo account (might be able to skip, can't remember), and update the system. Then, games require updates before being played if there is an update available. 9 times out of 10, however, the game won't have an update unless its an online based game.

Nintendo is still a much better choice than other console brands, but they're still in the same boat. Make no mistake on that.

You have to insert the disc while offline in order to get it to read from the physical media.

Isn't this the same as PC though albeit a bit longer than updates on PC. Windows has system updates, especially after first boot. Digital online game sales on consoles are still a complete disaster. Couple WiFi cards made by the lowest bidder alongside a network infrastructure seemingly held together with sticky tape and prayers and you get chronically slow downloads. Add to that a system that requires separate install process after downloads and makes you download updates separately rather than incorporate them together and you've got a recipe for hours of frustration.

Steam has it's shortcomings but its nailed this aspect for years: just bought a game and are installing it for the first time? Here's how long it'll take to download, this includes all updates since release, and when we're done it's pretty much ready. Might have to check your DirectX version but that's it. Game needs an update? We'll download it when you're not playing online. Missed 3 updates in a row while you were on holiday? We'll download the whole lot in one go and you'll be ready to go again in a few minutes. Here are the release notes for what we fixed. Download going to take a while? Turn off your PC and it'll resume from where you left off next time.

If this updates at the pace of the fucking windows 10 anniversary update, you might as well come back the next day. Seriously Microsoft how does it take 4 hours to download an update when I regularly get download speeds of 10 mb/s.. and why won't you show me the download speed?!

At this point, you may as well build a PC.

At least when we install a game, it's ready to play (most of the time)

Can confirm... bought an XBox One and NHL 17.

Took ~4 hours from set up to me playing my first game.

I moved. My new place has only internet in one room, my old self-built 2007 PC (which still runs amazing) has no WLAN card. So no more online gaming for me, which is fine as I don't find the time anyway.

We got an Xbox One instead (long time Halo fan, always knew someone with an xbox). My last consoles were a N64 and then a Gamecube. I was not prepared for it.

I haven't played on my xbox since christmas 2015, I still have to play through Halo 4.

Now there's an expensive blueray player beneath my TV because fuck that. I want to Plug&Play, that's why I had a console before, and that plus split screen coop were the only reasons for it. And then I read that Halo 5 doesn't come with split screen coop?! Fuck this!

consoles were awesome when they weren't connected and all you had to do was slam in a cartridge

Man I miss the PS1 and PS2. Developers knew they could only get so much out of graphics, and there really wasn't an online option, so they focused heavily on story and game play. I needed 4 CDs for some games, I needed memory cards which were sometimes lost, and the controllers weren't wireless, but the story line of some of the games pulled me right in and made me play for days straight.

Final fantasy 9 and legend of dragoon were both on 4 CDs and took me a long time to finish but it was absolutely worth it. At some parts I even felt empathy for the characters how well the story was made.

The first God of War was fun in the sense that I get to mash buttons to do combos and spill disgusting amounts of blood, but the plot was almost like an M. Night shamalalamabfjyugaydnhk movie with the twist at the end.

Now it's all just online garbage you pay for. With 720p and 1080p developers said "fuck it, make it look good and advertise it with some cool and popular song."

this was my exact reaction when i got my xbox one and tried to install the same game.

"oh hey, you need a 2gb system update, a 50gb game and then 50gb of updates for it, oh and by the way your controller needs and update and while you were downloading that another 1gb system update came out"

"whats that? you have 12gb of data for a month? ahh, go buy an xbox 360 you savage"

Oh but your PC is plug and play; not even close. No matter what console or system you will always have to install most/all of the following: 1) OS 2) drivers 3) applications 4) games 5) updates 6)updates for everything 7)updates every time you boot up

That's just the way it is
