I had a traumatic experience with this white hippie lady at whole foods (yes, I know) and need to vent bc my city is so very very upper middle class White.
I wore a #BLM shirt to whole foods, minding my own B, when this White hippie lady comes up to me and compliments my shirt.
Then, she insincerely compliments my hair and I'm thinking, "Ok... have you never seen a black person before? "
But then she gives me a lecture on ALL LIVES matter, but does it in the most neoliberal, condescending way!
"I'm Buddhist and we believe every life, including animals and plants, has value. I just hope we can all see past skin color and be one family."
IT'S NICE YOU BELIEVE MY LIFE IS WORTH AS MUCH AS A MOSQUITO BISH.
Then she tells me she doesn't believe in racism and starts talking about how she volunteered in Africa and didn't see African children as "black".
White hippie lady proceeds to whip out her phone and show me pictures of her HOLDING AFRICAN BABIES!
I've had enough and don't want to get arrested at fucking Whole Foods with a bunch of White ppl staring at me, so I say I gotta go and the hippie Becky flitters away to Yoga class.
I moved here from the South and experienced racism there, but at least White southerners are real about it. They're not up in my space bc they know better.
It's the smugness of their anti-racist racism that really makes me rage here. The "progressive" white hippies here think we live in a post-racial society and won't ever acknowledge their White privilege.
It's like the new White American upper middle class has changed their religion to Buddhism, don't have to work 9 to 5, do yoga, and Raise their own chickens. They've traded country clubs for co-ops and bulimia for veganism, thinking it makes them better human beings.
Adopting an Eastern religion is just their way of filling their empty, relatively worry-free lives. It doesn't absolve then from White Privilege.
Meanwhile, POC don't have the luxury of creating hardships just because we're bored and have a trust fund to fall back on.
