It's interesting when you consider that one of the encrypted files wikileaks sent out today was entitled Ecuador, and after words Ecudaor publicly re-affirmed their commitment to protecting Assange.

Are these tweets not the keys to the deadman switch files? Has anybody tried using them to open the files?

Edit: I get it I don't know how to cyber

They are file hashes to ensure when the password is released that the files haven't been tampered with

More specifically, I bet that they're a notice to the targeted parties of exactly what Wikileaks has and intends to publish. It's a very specific threat.

[–]PM_ME_UR_REDDIT_GOLD 433ポイント434ポイント  (506子コメント)

why would they be making threats instead of releasing what they have? Isn't Wikileaks about transparency? Why are they picking and choosing what they release?

When Wikileaks releases something, they tend to keep something 'bigger' back, to prevent reprisals. This dead man's switch that Assange has is part of that. If he is not able to connect to the internet and reset the switch, the data is released, causing headaches all around.

In this way, he protects himself from assassination/kidnap, unless someone with the power to stop him decides that the release won't be so bad for them, but worse for any rival nations/companies.

The threat might be Assange going "this is the info I have on you, give me back the internet now or this becomes public." in an attempt to force Ecuador to back down.

Good answer.

And it addresses the ethical problems inherent in this sort of situation. Does he get to play God, deciding what earth shattering truths make it to the light of day - and what shady characters get to keep on doing evil, unethical shit? The only ethical thing to do would be release it all, but to leave him so unprotected would be suicidal. Do you have to be willing to not just give up your life as you know it and live in exile, but to lose your life entirely, in order to be ethical? To be a hero with no qualifiers? Fuck, no one sane would do it. Which means we never have any leaks or whistle blowers, and corruption would steamroll on.

So what are we to do?

It could be unethical to release all the data as well. Perhaps outrage for something would be so bad that it could create instability and war in certain powerful countries

Because if they release everything, there's little incentive not to kill him. I'd suggest that they have a handful of the juiciest stuff saved just to make sure that they're not harmed.

The bigger question might be, out of the things that they intend to release, why are they holding back?

The answer is probably two-fold:

  1. A single massive information dump only has to be really be covered up and forgotten about once. It's the difference between Mike Tyson punching you in the face one time, and Ronda Rousey punching you in the face bi-weekly over the course of years.

  2. Like anyone else with power, they seem to have an agenda. Whether that's good or bad or whatever... I don't know, and as long as what they release is true, I don't really care. Any politician with something to hide deserves to be outed, and I'm not moved by objections that it's somehow unfair to out one politician without outing the other.

It's the fucking Fulcrum. WHERE IS REDDINGTON

Wasn't the Fulcrum in Chuck also? I miss Chuck.

It was an organisation in Chuck, in the Blacklist it's an archive of the global elite's secrets.

A single massive information dump only has to be really be covered up and forgotten about once. It's the difference between Mike Tyson punching you in the face one time, and Ronda Rousey punching you in the face bi-weekly over the course of years.

That's exactly how I explained it to my niece.

The issue isn't whether it's fair for the politicians with something to hide. The issue is that a supposed agenda could have negative effects on society. Let's say that politician A has minor skeletons and is an opponent of Wikileaks. And politician B has major skeletons but is not an opponent of Wikileaks. If Wikileaks has an agenda, they out A, but not B. Now, society distrusts A, and still trusts B, even though B is the more dangerous.

Nothing Wilileaks released in this scenario is false, but they control public opinion and potentially steer society into trouble.

The lack of transparency is troubling. Whenever there is a lack of transparency, people should be skeptical.

If someone leaked something to wikileaks, and wikileaks refused to publish it for political reasons, said person could just leak it elsewhere along with the fact that wikileaks refused to release it, which would pretty much destroy wikileaks in terms of credibility.

That honestly isn't all that much of a concern. Of greater concern would be people selectively leaking things to wikileaks in order to damage a specific candidate and holding back other information, but there is nothing wikileaks could do about that scenario.

said person could just leak it elsewhere along with the fact that wikileaks refused to release it,

You make that sound as if Wikileaks is part of a worldwide market of whistleblower news outlets with plenty of alternatives and if you don't like it, you can take your business down the road.

Wikileaks is very much a political player. If they have something to gain by withholding information, their value of "transparency" falls to the wayside.

In this case, the thing they have to gain by withholding information is Julian Assange's continued existence.

Moreover, once the files are released, he has nothing left after that. It's a safeguard that can only be used once. He doesn't want to release it any more than "they" do.

I'm willing to forgive them a bit of selective distribution given that it's the only thing keeping Assange out of prison and/or alive.

Information is power.

Wikileaks is leveraging their information for the greatest return.

If Ecuador made the news more often the world would know about President Correa and we can't have that can we?

Ecuador's History is far more interesting.

Shameless plug for the Book my father wrote (which is never slightly relevant). Ecuador has one hell of a history. Starting from the treasure that makes the ending of National Treasure look like chump change, Nazi's, Government corruption and Military coup's there has been a hell of a lot of interesting events no one has probably heard of. I mean most people can't even find Ecuador on a map and here I am trying to convince people I'm serious when I tell them my father used to be a treasure hunter.

I mean most people can't even find Ecuador on a map

Of course we can. It's that long line dividing the two halves of the globe. Your country is just really really long and really really thin, right?

Does he have a bio somewhere? That would be a very interesting perspective of a country i know very little about.

I don't think we will have many more people like my father. Not that he is exceptional, but sometimes you just exist without being part of the grid. You work jobs that are paid in cash, travel the world and perform odd jobs or live off the income you gained prior to travel. No Fancy Credentials, Degree, or College Diploma. Just a self made man, business owner, father and sometimes a schmuck (I guess those last two are the same).

His Kindle version is only $9.99, This book is his lifelong achievement. Self-published on Amazon, because getting a book written on treasure and the history of Ecuador isn't anything a big book company was interested in. He actually goes head to head with a few "respected" books on treasure claiming they are incorrect, cite impossible facts, or even reference that those people never met because historical records prove otherwise. Parts of his book is sometimes not that kind to Ecuador as a country so, there was little interest to even have someone publish it locally. A Story about treasure requires a little imagination and belief that the story you are listening to is true. His book reads more like a history book than a story, and it should. He has traveled all over to gain access to 100+ year old documents hidden away in old books or map rooms. The story is less about him and more about the legacy of the world class renowned treasure hunters of the time. He continued their journey where some left off and even acquired the entire collection of one of the most revered individuals of the time. he owns the copyright data on all of those maps and documents, so I suppose that is probably the only proof anyone can provide. I had the tedious task of taking all his cassette taps from the 70's and 80's and converting them to digital media. Endless hours of treasure hunters sitting in a room discussing so many things in great detail. Most of the people within that circle who read his book were amazed at how well he documented the history. Rather interesting when you have 80 and 90 year old men writing emails back and forth as they "remember" more and more details, excited as school children to share stories they never would have told each other at the time. Treasure Hunters were never good at sharing information/secrets.

This book has so much stuff crammed in it, they should make it required reading. (He actually does talk about Assange at the end). He talks about Charles Darwin and the Galapagos Islands, George Miller Dyott, whose Wikipedia page is a horrible insult to an amazing man of his time. Eugene Brenner (the main focal point of the story), who fought against the Nazi's in the resistance and then hunted them down after the war in Ecuador. And how can we not of course, talk about the treasure itself? Atahualpa and Pizzaro (The famous conquistador). He includes first hand stories of conquistadors and there accounts of the treasure, and most importantly more recent times. My memory is a bit hazy, but I recall a story about the military was divided into 3 factions. The Army, The Navy, and The Airforce. They would always go back and forth against who hated who and IIRC even fought a civil war against each other. I don't remember if that was the Ecuador Civil war or part of the 63 or 76 coup. So many stories I've heard they just jumble together sometimes. I can't even remember if the story was about my Father or Eugene, but one of them was pulled out of a taxi at gun point by some soldiers and fortunately they happened to have a brief case with the DOD or some other logo on it who they just happened to be loyal to and escorted them out of the mayhem.

His book is a hard read for some and it is a very niche market of stories. If anyone does buy a copy, if you left a review that would make his day. it is insanely detailed and it should be for something he wrote over and over again for 10 years.

Julian assange runs a website called Wikileaks that publishes secrets and stuff. They recently got their hands on a ton of emails related to Hillary Clinton and have been leaking them in parts (I think 10 now) now, of course a bunch of governments really fucking hate this guy. So he managed to strike a deal with Ecuador to say in their embassy in London. Since 2012 they've kept him there under their protection with the basic agreement being "don't start stirring shit up, and we won't kick you out." As if recent they've leaked a boatload of emails regarding Hillary, her foundation, and a bunch of other things. So now he has no internet.

This is just how i understand it. I'm probably not 100% correct.

EDIT: here's the reason he's in the embassy in the first place (thanks /u/mph88delorean )

/u/mph88delorean : He's in the embassy because he doesn't want to answer for rape allegations that were closed but reopened against the accusers wishes as a ploy to extradit him to the US. Even the UN says it's a bullshit excuse to grab him.

On top of that, he has a dead man's switch. Every 24 hours he has to activate it, or else it will assume that he is dead, and release the password to decrypt some 90 GB leak. Pretty damn good way ensure your survival if you ask me.

Knowing myself, I'd forget to activate the dead man's switch, and wake up a minute after in a cold swear realizing I fucked up real bad.

One of my favorite early comments on this issue was when someone pointed out that the Ecuadorian ambassador resetting the router would technically count as a "state actor."

And it's even funnier now that we know it's true.

Assange accidentally tripped over his own 50 foot lan cable

Cutting off the free WiFi to the guy who's freeloading on your couch for 5 years isn't really the actions of a "state actor."

His supporters are more than welcome to chip in for this: http://www.vodafone.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/dongles-and-mobile-wi-fi/index.htm

I'm sure that it only technically being a state actor (because Ecuador is a nation-state), while still not being even remotely like what most people meant who were repeating that phrase, was part of the intent of the initial joke.

But yeah. They're entitled to cut off his net if they want. They're even entitled to kick him out entirely, if they want. It's their embassy.

He could have simply broken an agreement he had with the embassy and this is their response.

According to some of the top comments. The initial deal with Ecuador is for him to not pick one side in politics for the past year he has pretty much focus on us politics and specifically on Hillary Clinton.

I have a big problem with this. Even if he does have damning evidence on Clinton, it looks like he's trying to maximize damage against her on her presidential campaign, rather than release the leaks for the common good. Building up to the election like this can have huge consequences for the US as a whole, regardless of what she did or did not do. Couple that with nothing on Trump, and it looks off.

*The responsible thing would be to release it as far advanced to the elections as possible so the US people can actually discuss it rather than have a knee jerk reaction. *

Edit: I can't respond to everyone, but I've gotten a lot of similar comments.

  1. I emboldened the part where I'm clearly okay with leaking information. It's the timing that I don't like, and one sidedness that doesn't seem right. I understand that having something on Clinton does not guarantee there is something on the RNC/Trump, but it definitely seems one sided.

  2. "He's doing not because people forget quickly! Clinton deserves this! The American people need to wake up!" I don't think the ends justify the means in this, and that the US people aren't as dumb (or you aren't as smart) as you make them out to be. The irony here is that Trump is not escaping over time, and if Clinton did something truest horrible I'm pretty confident she'd be treated the same.

  3. "The news media is obviously controlled by Clinton!" Unless you think the evangelical church, Mormon church, Glenn Beck, RNC and many conservative news companies are also colluding with them, then Trump is probably as worthy of this attention as it gets. I'm very concerned with him promoting the idea that the election is rigged, as it will probably lead to his followers taking more drastic measures. He's a sore loser that does not consider the outcome of his actions.

  4. "Everything about Trump is already public, so there's nothing to leak" There's still the details of the many sexual harassment cases against his company, information on Trump U, his charity, private business dealings, more tax returns, details of his rape allegation from his x wife that was retracted as a part of their divorce settlement, etc. There's substantially more to expect from Trump than Clinton.

Given that he's been living in their embassy since 2012, I imagine they're just plain pissed off with him.

[–]PRO_NWOdontkillmebro 203ポイント204ポイント  (18子コメント)

i just picture Assange every morning coming downstairs in a bath robe not shaven wearing flip flops Crocs to get his morning paper. Says hi to the security guards and cracks a joke with the janitor as he goes back to his quarters where he reads other peoples emails all day.

Damn, now I want this to be a sitcom.

[–]PRO_NWOdontkillmebro 25ポイント26ポイント  (11子コメント)

Oh hell yeah. Toss in some studio audience laughter as he cracks a joke with the receptionist. It could be a comedy/action/suspense. Maybe make Kevin Hart his co-star

Assange & Hart... I like that.

Episode 1: Surviving the Ecuadorian Flood

Assange clogs the embassy toilet and causes a massive overflow of dirty water that floods the bathroom where Hart is also present. Hart is drowning. Assange needs to rescue him before the flood rises and drowns him too.

Episode 2: Three's A Crowd

At the annual Ecuadorian Embassy ball that The Ambassador hosts, Assange accidentally got two women to go with him at once, but they don't know about each other and one of them, unbeknownst to him, is an American spy! He enlists Hart to keep them busy as Assange switches between them during the dance so they don't find out about each other. Assange takes the spy back to his room, where she plans to steal his laptop, until Hart accidentally lets it slip to the other woman. She shows up and dumps a bowl of punch all over Assange, the spy, and the laptop (effectively destroying it). The other woman storms out, the spy storms out, Assange (in shock and disbelief) picks up the laptop and tips it to pour out a comical amount of punch. Hart says "Hey man, look at the bright side: you've got another leak." Laugh track, applause, closing credits.

Excuse me but I thought today was the day the world descended into chaos and WW3 was going to begin and Hillary was literally rappelling down the Ecuadorian embassy walls to assassinate Assange herself.

Hillary was literally rappelling down the Ecuadorian embassy walls to assassinate Assange herself.

That was an option? I didn't even know that was on the table.

That was actually buried in the released emails. We were all distracted by that extreme bombshell campaign ruiners such as "Podesta thought the newest Dan brown novel was just alright" and "Hillary took her personal lamp from home with her when she left the state department" that we missed the real controversy of HillaryRappellDownEcuadorianEmbassytoTakeOutAssange-Gate for all the damn red herrings!

In the Darkness of the Ecuadorian guest room, Assange sits quietly in the blue glow of his laptop. He hears a sound of shuffling feet behind him. He quickly turns around. Unable to see in the piercing darkness in front of him, he meekly asks "who's there?"

After a moment in time that felt like eternity, he was met by a familiar presence. The ensuing coughing spell that lasted 30 seconds followed by a feminine voice "it's only pneumonia", only confirmed what Assange already knew. The room started to grow darker with the thump in his chest. The smell of gunpowder and his flesh prumigrating his nostrils. Assange could only think to himself as he slumped to the floor. "I could have saved a bunch of money if I had switched to GEICO".

I wonder if the release of a file called "Ecuador" pissed them off.

I can't imagine a country's embassy willfully allowing a guest to release something sensitive about them. That'd be like Russia letting Snowden drop a Putin bombshell.

EDIT: Also, did they "cut" him off, or just change the WiFi password on him?

I like this quick turnaround time. It gives us all a chance to compare what actually happened to what the armchair geopolitical experts here on reddit feel happened, even if it is totally incorrect:

"An important thing to keep in mind is that Assange is in the Ecuadorian embassy. We can assume that the state actor is not Ecuador." [+41]

and in /r/worldnews:

"We need as many of our British neet centipedes to get to the embassy and occupy the general vicinity, the people the better. Livestream, livestream, livestream. They can't kill him while millions of people are watching." [+418]

and /r/wikileaks:

"If he dies, he goes out a Martyr. Assange has made me proud to be Australian and I will never forget his efforts to expose the elite Hillary and her friends. FUCK the establishment, and I REALLY hope Julian lives." [+982]

people in /r/the_Donald literally ready for war and for them to be next:

"Don't be surprised if they shut down this sub. Get your backup ready folks." [+163]

and

"Can we just asses the situation here: The United States is attacking an Australian citizen that's located in the sovereign Ecuadorian embassy... in London. This must require the president. Absolutely must. Are we talking acts of war here?" [+73]

edit: thank you for the gold. Honestly putting this comment together was enjoyment enough for me.

Especially that last comment... what the hell was he smoking.

I also laughed, and a second later reminisced on that laugh and chuckled sensibly again.

Tomorrow on the top of /r/The_Donald:

"Hillary and her campaign commits Australian GENOCIDE in Ecuador."

Thank you for introducing me to this treasure trove.

I hope it chronicles the insane ebola panic Reddit went through. Trying to talk sense into people was impossible.

It's somewhere on the side bar. I wish there was away to view post say only posted this month but last year. Would be fun to look back.

Yeah. "Are you fucking the corpse of someone that is bleeding out of their mucous membranes?"

If not, then you don't have Ebola.

Underrated sub. There's so much more fear mongering bullshit that I see on Reddit every day that needs to be archived there to remind people what irrational knee-jerk behavior looks like.

That was just a small sample of the totally ungrounded theories these normal people (with no advanced knowledge of the situation) thought up and spewed as plausible truth.

Don't forget the hundreds of people who saw these comments and said "Yeah ... upvote."

[–]OPINION_IS_UNPOPULAR 147ポイント148ポイント  (18子コメント)

Don't forget that heavily downvoted dissenting comments.

It doesn't matter if you're right, only if you follow the hive mind.

They're smoking The Donald's pole. They're seriously fucked in the head over there.
The other day, the top post on that sub was a picture of Teddy Roosevelt saying "if you want to anger a conservative, tell him a lie. If you want to anger a liberal, tell him the truth".
The only thing is, that quote is false, never happened.
Someone pointed that out and OP said that even though the quote was bullshit it was still a "spot on" analysis of today's political situation.
The irony was lost on them.

Get your backup ready folks

Someone at NSA chuckled at this.

No they didn't, they probably aren't monitoring that circle jerk

Considering the number of people calling for civil war or assasinating Hillary if (lol) Trump loses, I'm sure that there are at least some people monitoring it.

I don't think you really need an actual person or even a real program, I'm sure a couple of regular expressions can handle the whole subreddit.

A single line of shell code piping the output to /dev/null suffices

Storing it in /dev/null would be an economical choice consistent with the value.

I love that "Are we talking acts of war here?" Australia, England, Ecuador, y'all better be ready because America is coming

This has been yet another episode of " I am a teenager and know everything." Tune in next week for our next episode "Fuck you, dad! You can't tell me what to do!"

Try being an adult and having the whole thing come full circle with your senior citizens parents. "Mom, please stop. Obama was born in Hawaii."

The paranoia and persecution complexes are palpable.

its no surprise that in the last week, as Trump began to really get into the "election is rigged, conspiracy to prevent me from taking office, evil global banking conspiracy" type shit that we see that reflected in his disciples on reddit.

It was on the subreddit before Trump started talking about it.

He's been saying it since the primaries. If he doesn't win it's obviously not his fault but the system that's clearly rigged against him. He's never responsible for his behavior or words. It's all just so unfair!

He's never responsible when he's losing, but when he's winning it's all about how great and huge and big league he is.

I tell you what, that subreddit is completely fascinating. It's probably 80% legit trump supporters and 20% trolls. The trolls are from deep within 4chan. They come just to stir the pot and pour gasoline on the conspiracy fire.

"Deep within 4chan." I mean /pol/ is a single click away like all the other boards.

People really like to make 4chan out to be as seedy as possible

With how people talk about it, you'd think you'd need TOR or a secret password to get into it. I genuinely wonder how many people here who talk about 4chan have ever actually been there.

edit: I should also mention how everyone thinks 4chan is just /b/ or /pol/, there are sfw boards believe it or not and they aren't all as gay as /fit/.

4chan is the Internet equivalent of the Mos Eisley cantina

Honestly it's more like that underwater city that Jar Jar Binks is from.

Nah mate these are really terrible disfigured people that have been fully corrupted by the 4chan

I got hard banned by the mods for saying maybe Trump Won't win. They pretty much called for my lynching. The mods said I was banned for not liking trump.

It's kind of a microcosm of the problem 4chan itself now has.

The_Donald started off 90% trolls, 10% idiots but now it's grown and the percentages have flipped.

In the same way, 4chan spent years making funnies pretending to be racists and idiots... and now it's attracted a userbase entirely of actual racists and idiots.

Still, can't wait for the morning after Trump gets completely routed. The entire site will be flagellating itself about "how it almost got Trump elected" in a sad and upscaled version of this comic strip

I swear that redditors turn into an army of Alex jones clones sometimes with all the crazy conspiracy shit. One thing happens and boom. Yup. Hillary has stage 4 lung cancer or trump and Putin are plotting world domination. It's like nuances and actually waiting for facts just go away after something happens.

Not to say all by any means. Just some. Who tend to talk really loud. Before the facts. And then keep talking.

It seems to be related to the new lawsuit for breach of contract from ToddandClare.com:

Our understanding is that the RBPF Investigation (RBPF Reference: Sgt Ferguson 1705 RBPF Thompson Boulevard) is being handled by a specialist child protection unit of the Bahamas police authorities and relates to the child exploitation of an 8-year-old juvenile in Nassau, Bahamas using electronic/internet methods; prohibited use of an electronic communication system to procure a minor; child pornography production; and the luring of a minor online for sex, by Mr Julian Assange, who we understand has been identified from chatlogs.

That actually leaked before the news of the shut down, but it got drowned in the conspiracy theories.

If Julian Assange was blind enough to try to seduce an 8 year old in a chatroom while in his position, that would be the punchline of 2016.

Reading the report, it sounds like he had been webcamming with an (adult) female he'd met through that dating website, and somehow starting talking with that woman's little sister and asking her to do sexual things. The letter from the website to the UN says that apparently Assange is easily identifiable in the logs.

Is this the October surprise he was hyping?

So embarrassing. We are totally loosing all the goodwill we got when we caught the Boston Bomber.

Somebody must have needed to use the land line

According to the tweet it was cut off after the goldman Sachs speeches were released, that was on Saturday.
He was cut off today. It's Monday.

We all know the work week for everyone, even Assange, begins on Mondays.

They cut us off right away! When they returned to work at 9:05am EDT after the weekend. They don't pay enough for major spyshit on Saturday/Sunday.

I missed this today.. why is the Ecuadorian embassy cutting off Julian Assange's internet? What's the motivation? All i see in this thread are unsubstantiated theories and others chiding those who espouse them. Anyone actually know what's going on?

Maybe they have an internet plan with a data cap. My plan is 110 Gbs a month. I usually am right on. If I had Assange here, I'm sure I'd be over all the time with all the zip files and shit he's sending everywhere and I pay $10 per extra gig.

Don't piss off your keepers if they can change the wifi password

They're behaving as if Wikileaks is a one-person operation.

I don't get this...do they not have 4G in the UK? Is the Ecuadorian embassy some kind of 4G dead zone?

Reception is actually pretty bad in a lot of indoor parts of London. A lot of brand new offices in zone 1 have terrible reception because they often haven't got mobile phone repeaters installed when they open.

If Ecuador don't have repeaters installed then it may well be that they don't have a good phone signal.

Oh, so that story I saw plastered on every fucking sub this morning about how HRC is out to get Julian Assange was just total bullshit?

What a surprise.
