I'm assuming you recently graduated from high school..if so, then do this:
1) enroll in your local junior college and take math and english composition classes. Continue for the next semester or so until you get through trigonometry(or equivalent) and english comp 2(the english comp where you read shakespeare etc and write reports).
2) Assuming you have to work, just get a suck job at McDonalds to get by on. Don't get suckered into some full time job, and especially don't go into construction full time otherwise you'll hate yourself in five years and will probably end up committing suicide.
3) Start messing around with coding. Start simple. Get a "Java for Dummies" or similar (tons of online stuff for learning coding). The goal here isn't to become a coder, but to simply make you more aware.
4) Once you've completed trig and english, then decide what you want to do. At this point, you can go into the police, fire academy, work a shitty construction job, or stay on at McDonalds with a clear conscience.
This is exactly what I did, back in the day(except I work at Jack in the Box)...now have a masters in engineering and make well into $ix figures...
