I've just alway just assumed those that align with liberals, like myself, always see them as they see themselves, for what they truly are. Those who do not see them as an extreme example, like those annoying tumblr posts that people seem to hate. And we seem to get a lot of hate for being baby killers or whatever. Religious right hate us especially, because I don't want to live by restrictions they set themselves. I refuse to. I'm not too sure about the deeper details of politics, but from my view, that's what I see

In the end, I am a godless, pro choice liberal living in the south, and that's who I will always be.

These days being a liberal means you don't want to torture people or incarcerate your political opponents as retribution.

What a beautifully loaded question

I won't try to explain it but I will say that you have the right idea. The words have been twisted and torn apart to mean something far from what it should stand for. The Republican party actually espouses more Libertarian ideals, which you would think would be called Liberal ideals.

It might be interesting for you to take some political ideology tests, careful they are sometimes Libertarian leaning:

I like the political compass one.

Personally I find the Democratic party to be the most egalitarian (with a healthy dose of capitalism and social responsibility) and personally I think that is the future of humanity. See: John Rawls.
