I have gotten 2 crash notifications from Go. I haven't launched it in 2 weeks.

I had the same issue and ended up uninstalling PoGo because I couldn't figure out how to make the crash notifications stop (also haven't played in weeks). It was a sad day :(

I'll just be keeping an eye on this sub to see if things get any better before re-downloading.

Knowing niantic, they will just block the ability to send crash notifications

It clearly works! We've had 0 crash notifications since the implementation!

Ha better? It's going to get worse at this rate when they cant even fix any major issues.

Now you mention it, I was driving with Google Maps on the other day, and Pokémon GO kept crashing continuously in the background, literally continuously. Like, wtf!? I wasn't even playing it, neither.

When it crashed for the second time for me and I closed it, my phone let me know that it was the TENTH TIME THIS WEEK that it crashed and that i can put it in battery saving mode to keep it off unless I turn it on. Apparently it was draining my battery even with it completely off before that..

Force close it, then don't use it until you really need/want to. This will stop it from crashing in the background, apparently.

That's an unacceptable requirement for a game that's not even supposed to be active while in the background. The fuck is wrong with Niantic?

To be fair, almost every app on your phone will periodically wake up and run in the background (marshmallow helped to combat this significantly though)

But when an app is woken up post marshmallow, a lot of times its because of gsm push, which is usually for push notifications.

The first step is disable notifications, that'll help. Then if you're on samsung, set it to always save power in smart manager. If you're on another device, i dont know what the equivalent is... but you can always use the Greenify app in non-root mode, helps alot.

Pokemongo is by no means the only app that does this, they just apparently did it incorrectly to cause crashes.

Although if you're on a device that doesn't support gsm, then that explains it, but that's still niantic's bad.

Honestly, instead of going through any of those steps, do one step: Uninstall it. If you don't care about it enough that it's notifications start pissing you off, you probably don't even want it installed anymore. You can always reinstall it later.

Any game that starts bitching at me for not playing it gets uninstalled immediately. It's ridiculous. I'll play you when I want to and not a second before.

True dat, thats my stance. Its been off my phone since the moment they blocked rooted phones.

Just trying to help those who are still clinging on.

Block rooted phones? WHAT THE FUCK

NO nitantic, bad, bad niantic

To help the continuing problem with spoofing, their solution also blocked most Chinese phones, Blackberry Android phones and anything unlocked to run on any network iirc.

[–]Grumpy_Old_MansUSE YOUR SPLASH ATTACK! 36

That was the reason I deleted the game. Hadn't played it for a few weeks, decided to pick it back up and see what was going on, play it for a bit, had my device rooted and kept getting error messages. Found out it was because I updated the app, immediately uninstalled because i'm not going to un-root my device so I can play a fuckin' game and by the sound of things i'm glad as hell I did too, what with all the crashes and battery drainage, i'm good.

What an unnecessary decision on their part by doing that, there's a lot they seem to be fuckin' up here recently though, yet some how they are still reportedly bringing in a little over $2 MILLION A DAY

edit: word

Yea to be honest, it was actually kind of a relief for me when they starting blocking root.

I was fed up with the damage they'd done to scanners, trackers, gyms, rural areas, catch rates, etc. So it was like "oh okay, cool. Peace out"

The break up was mutual.

I'm still subbed here for two reasons. I want to be in the loop in the fairy-tale scenario that everything gets fixed.

But mostly, hearing all the ways niantic fucks up is a glorious shit show. Its like a modern day Shakespeare tragedy IRL... except niantic is the only one committing suicide.

I've been out of the loop. Why did they block rooted phones?

do one step: Uninstall it

This was the straw duder.

I restarted my phone and it continued to crash, so I uninstalled it.

Same here. Been using Google maps while on vacation. It happened so often I had to finally uninstall the game. Shame

Same here. I quit playing anyway

I always hit the apps button on my galaxy s7 and close all apps but I got a notification saying Pokémon Go crashed 21 times. Wtf do I have to clear cache from the settings or something?

I've been having problems with my phone connecting to my WiFi at home, but whenever I am connected, I get at least 6 "Pokémon Go app has crashed" popups. I haven't played since the end of august. :/

I got three "Pokemon GO has stopped unexpectedly" (or something like that) in a single day and same, I hadn't even opened the app in weeks.

[–]NipsbrahWhat is Shelter 14

yeah started getting these the other day, immediately uninstalled. i dont need the extra drain on my battery

Same, yesterday I literally got like 5 crash reports in an hour, it did not stop until I manually opened the app and closed it, before that it had been minimum of a week since I launched the app

They can have push notifications when the game isn't running, but can't count distance traveled while not running.

In all fairness, distance doesn't count when running either.

Yeah, got it when it first came out and I'd be lucky if it logged 1/4 of the distance I'd walk. I uninstalled the game after a few days but my wife still plays it and her eggs hatch in the car when I'm driving around now...

I thought the point of this complaint is that the game has problems running at all.

they had the most successful app in technological history, and ruined themselves with third-party censorship and inability to update appropriately. I stopped playing probably two months ago

You can, though. You just have to buy a pokemon Go watch. Only $30 MSRP because software can't handle it. :D

It pisses me off so much that there's actually already code to keep track of distance while the phone is asleep but you have to buy an accessory to use it.

So that's the scam.. they really are making all the wrong moves with this game

The notification and location tracking/step counting systems are so different that its not a problem. The notification comes from an outside source not from the app itself.

[–]anothgaMy Team master is better than your.

They can have push notifications when the game isn't running

But Graves can't have his cigar.

Thats just how android works. A push notification can start a part of an up doing work, even when absolutely no part of the app was running at the time. But to monitor the gps and run the hatching calculations and so on requires the app to be running. You can have a background process running at all times doing hatching but your battery will be drained as long as your phone is on.

I'm thinking more along the lines of exporting data from the health app, which would be less system intensive, on iPhone at least.

Watching PoGo collapse has been sortof sad. I didn't grow up with pokemon, I think it came just barely after my childhood, but I had always heard about it.

When PoGo came out, I played it a little bit. I even met up with some of my friends at a local bar that had a couple of gyms within range of a table there, AND the bar had a special going for PoGo players!

During this time, my friends would keep the 3rd party maps open all the time, and if they saw an interesting spawn nearby, they would drop what they were doing and literally RUN to that location. There was commotion, it was fun, it was exciting. It was really cool, really engaging game that seemed like it was representative of good things to come for mobile gaming.

The idea that you would get people to engage at that level was incredible. If you went to a park for the first few weeks after it opened, they parks were absolutely filled with people playing. It was really, really interesting to watch, and definitely felt like something new.

When they killed the 3rd party trackers is when they killed the game.

I don't see anybody playing it anymore. My office is a pokestop, and we used to see people going by all night long (after school got out, I assume) playing. Now, there is nothing. Maybe a couple of ingress players here and there.

Sad.

Exactly this. Niantic released half a game and it was the most downloaded game ever. But players weren't 100% happy with it, so rather than just complain, they were enterprising enough to create the tools they wanted the game to have and freely share them with the community. And how did Niantic respond to this again? With cease and desists followed by back-end sabotage of their own game to make the third-party tools break.

Look, I get there's people who say the gamers had no right to do this in the first place, Niantic can run it however they want, blah blah blah. But you're wrong. When gamers love your product so much that they're willing to essentially work for free to improve it for you - when they see so much potential in the game that their first reaction is to spend hours of their free time making it more functional and more fun, you have a duty as the company to either (a) encourage the community to do its own thing, or (b) play along with them by releasing official tools like they ones they made themselves (since you have all the money and resources to do so.) That's good customer service 101.

For me when they killed the in game tracking features, dumbed down spawn rates, killed 3rd party trackers and so on the game died. And it sucks. As you said, those first couple weeks was amazing playing and getting to meet new people. Would be at the park or pokes top and random strangers talking with each other. Fast forward to now, only one person in my neighborhood even bothers. And the gyms are stagnate now.

This, on so many levels. It's like they're actively looking to keep people disengaged from the game. The only reason I can think of is that their vision of it is some subconscious stamp collector game. Realistically, none of us that have ever enjoyed Pokemon or video games agree with that vision. What I don't understand is who does think that's a good idea, rather than a super involving community game which everyone has access to.

Ask Ingress players, they've been saying it since before Pokemon Go existed. Niantic literally does not care about you or this thread. It's a shame.

They're just going full damage-control mode now, and in the completely wrong ways.

you cant really damage-control how fucking bad the game runs right now. Want to open a pokestop on a phone that can play fucking GTA Vice city? well too bad, get some nice 1-2fps animation and then "This pokestop is too far"

PokemonGo is one of the best examples of how DRM hurts legit customers. It may not be DRM in the traditional sense, but they put in so much extra crap to prevent so many things that it really just kills the game for legit users. The game would have been so much better off if they didn't put in so much to prevent cheating, which never works anyways. Despite their efforts, people can still cheat so we are just punished for little gain.

I was just saying this. I played totally legit. I didn't even use the app or website or whatever to find nests. I was a super casual.

I don't even open on my walk to work anymore. The anti-cheating is so bad that my 5k/day walk (with a single 90 degree turn each way) nets me 2 5k eggs a week and MAYBE 2 candy from the Pokemon I set to follow me. My profession was so slow it's just not worth it.

The battery drain stuff is also so bad because they have so much stuff in it. Someone posted on here recently that they actually made the game intentionally use more battery because they wanted to try and hide what the game is doing. So anytime it would do a calculation, the app would also do a lot of other random calculations that meant nothing, purely so that it makes it harder for people to reverse engineer the game. So that they have a harder time finding the real code. This was in a patch that they added this too, so they knowingly made the battery use worse just to thwart people, despite that not working anyways.

I've gotten that message while my avatar's face was literally right behind the pokestop.

I have to give Pokemon Go credit...it got me back into Pokemon after a good 5-10 years! I went out and bought a New 3DS and Alpha Sapphire and I pre-ordered Sun and Moon! I am glad I played the game when I did and I had fun but I have more fun playing the actual game.

I'd say the credit there goes to The Pokemon Company more than Niantic. I believe The Pokemon Company is really just treating pokemongo as an advertising campaign.

It was supposed to be an ad campaign to begin with. Once they realized people started to like the game itself too, they started struggling and shit went down.

This game was literally conceived from the Google Maps Pokemon April Fools experiment from 2014. It was so popular that one of Google's developers (Niantic, obvs) was collaborated with to make a pokemon game based around the massive amount of geocaching data collected with Ingress.

It was ALWAYS an ad campaign. It put millions into their pocket and Niantic's. They achieved their dream goal and made the most popular mobile game.

I'll just wait for Gen 2 to happen because it seems obvious it will.

[–]Vladimir_Pooptin 4ポイント5ポイント  (0子コメント)

Frankly I don't think Niantic can deliver an update that large without breaking the game even further

Exactly what happened to me. All PoGO really accomplished to me (since I can't play in my town, 3 pokestops and no gym) is getting me playing firered and silver again =]

Seriously. I go through phases where I don't play Pokemon at all for long stretches of time, but then something like this happens and I suddenly think "Hey, I wanna do that again."

Hey Niantic: FIX THE FUCKING TRACKER. THAT'S LITERALLY ALL WE WANT. ANY OTHER UPDATE IS POINTLESS. FIX THE GODDAMN TRACKER.

As someone who hasn't played Pokemon Go for about two months: whoa. They still haven't fixed the tracker?

No, they intentionally broke it with a bug due to resource issues, then full on removed it because it's too heavy on their severs. But then they went and deliberately tried to kill off all 3rd party support for their game that would, in effect, work as a tracker. Still haven't figured out that reasoning.

[–]MilitantNegro_ver3 80ポイント81ポイント  (8子コメント)

Still haven't figured out that reasoning.

You mentioned it yourself. Tracking was too heavy on their systems. It's not like those third party apps were doing any of the heavy lifting themselves. They were still polling Niantic servers to get the locations pf Pokemon.

To be honest the 3rd party tracker apps hogging data by having 1000s of bots accounts could easily be fixed by Niantic creating a connection to all spawn data... That means the tracker apps read that just once every say 30 seconds/minute and then it's just up the tracker app to design how the users see that data... That will save Niantic servers from getting bombarded by 1000s of bots.

So server stability isn't much of an excuse imo.

Not "all". A tracker may save the game in big cities, but I can't play because my town has 3 pokestops, no gym and no spawns.

Ok fix tracker!!! And help us rural players!!!! Or at least one of them... please?

As someone who didn't open Pokemon Go for for 2 months and thus also didn't visit this sub much: It's hilarious (sad) this is STILL and issue.

I don't even care about the tracker anymore. What would I do with the Pokémon I catch? Gym battles are a joke, and since everyone else stopped playing, catching is no longer any fun.

Well, and let it run on rooted phones maybe?

[–]Tpex 3

Yeah, I really don't feel like going through the effort of flashing the fix just to play PoGO

No, it needs some damn game mechanics and not only be a fucking souvenir collector game.

Do they want me to uninstall their game? Because that's how you get me to uninstall your game.

Nothing makes me uninstall an app faster than unsolicited push notifications.

Fun fact you can turn those off

The proper model is game like Puzzle and Dragons, which you can turn ON push notifications for a specific situation but none are defaulted to on.

In theory, that's how it works in the German version of PoGo, too. Unsolicited advertising is illegal around here, you have to actively opt in TWICE or they aren't allowed to send you anything. So the German version of the app has a box in the menu setting that you have to check to get advertising from Niantic. Of course, i never checked it. Yet i still get push notifications from Niantic.

[–]LeonimuZLiterally all Zubats 187

you shouldn't get them in the first place.

I wonder how many people would turn them on voluntarily

I keep mine on in the hopes that they will notify me of events in this method and/or start letting me run this app in the background while still notifying me of Pokemon nearby.

Already did. Not looking back. I'm such a bad ass I know.

I live in a town with 900 people. I uninstalled their game the moment I started getting told it was crashing even though I hadn't launched it in weeks. Fuck that.

I got this too and I laughed. Too late Niantic. You ruined your own game.

kinda sad really. I work at the largest park in my town, we would have hundreds of people (kids to adults) every single day playing. Seeing all these people outside enoying the park was amazing, I really thought this was going to be a game changer.

The week they made the tracking fix we lost 80% of the people. They really killed it.

Meh. I think it also had a lot to do with the game being quite one dimensional. The hype was always bound to die down.

[–]Chaos20X6Hard work and guts! 2

They accelerated the inevitable. The game was shallow from the beginning, but the promise of future gameplay was what kept a lot of us going. Removing the current gameplay with no word of replacing it, not communicating with the fans, and offering no hint of the future gameplay they promised, that's how Niantic fucked themselves.

Same. Who knows maybe one day Niantic actually starts giving a fuck and fixes their game.

[–]The_Pert_Whisperer 91ポイント92ポイント  (9子コメント)

There was a thread like a week after the game came out made by this Ingress player who basically said we're fucked. Niantic just doesn't listen or fix anything. It was like a prophecy.

I droped it a few days after figuring out you can't battle random people with your pokemon

I remember when they said that was a planned feature coming soon like the day the game came out.

Same. Why the fuck do i want to play what is a glorified coin collecting game? I want to train my pokemon up in the wild, and then go beat the shit out of real world players pokemon. It could have been the coolest community game ever. It failed hard.

Haha same here. Maybe because we want to watch this ship go down

same with me. as long as it's not obstrusive ( ? sorry my bad english).

Maybe obstrusive needs to be a word to combine obstructive and intrusive (but I think you're looking for intrusive).

maybe... i don't know. english is weird. was thinking of obtrusive got it mixed with intrusive. haha

I like to imagine English is your only spoken language.

I think most people would be fine with this as long as the icon wasn't larger than a pokestop. It might actually be beneficial, since some small towns would get a pokestop where there may have been none.

yep. as long as it doesnt mess with the experience it should be okay. sponsored pokestops, sponsored spawns, etc.

Your one and only Pikachu has gotten sick. Do you pay for antibiotic vetenary bills of only $4.99 or are you a heartless jerk who doesn't care about his Pokemon and doesn't mind if they die? If you're too young to purchase things, go plead with your parents about the severity of the situation.

The most wishful of wishful thinking- Push notifications are for future events. They're just testing to see if they work as intended for now.

So Pokémon go can run In the background for sending push notifications but God forbid I want to lock my phone and go for a walk. I've spent too much damn money on this game and I don't even know why.

Yeah, I'm not going to be delete it just yet, but I spent way way too much money on this game. They got my last $ until I'm sure they fix stuff for good.

Push notifications work without the app running in the background. That's basically the essence of the feature.

I got the notification for new update, clicked to it and got "Your device is not compatible..." Well done.

As if push notifications are going to make me want to wander around aimlessly searching for mons.. fix the damn tracker.. is it too much to ask?

Push notifications, if used properly, help user retention. This isn't something new, almost every major mobile title uses them. That said, as misguided as this complaint may be it goes to show how badly Niantic has lost the Reddit community.

We all begged for push notifications for spawns when PoGo was running in the background for ages and nobody listened. They are okay with annoying and useless notifications, but not useful ones that might improve game play and user experience?

Gotta sell more of those stupid watches I guess.

Yeah I saw this and uninstalled right after. Not that I had been playing much anyway. But this game has no appeal to me anymore.

Why haven't you guys just uninstalled it?

I havent opened the app in over 2 months. This was a nice reminder to uninstall this piece of shit game.

To be fair, that push notification is about a new update with a new feature. Isn't that what we wanted? More communication. As long as the notifications are informative, I don't see the issue.

Hey niantic! Great to see you checking in on the community, but you seem to be under the impression that there is no problem. Have a read of a few more comments and figure it out.

Is the feature a working tracker? Because until they re-add that feature I don't care.

You're right. The tracker is the fucking point of the game. Without it you are wandering around aimlessly hoping to find a pokemon. I lost interest when they removed it.

Not sure if I've moved too far away from the pokemon I'm looking for, or if it despawned.

Surely since no one is playing and the original problem was server load they can just revert back to 3 steps?

You and me both, my interest now comes and goes with FPM working. I'd stay interested if Niantic reintroduced the core game mechanic back into their game.

Or maybe it's just a new feature they're going to include in future updates?

Nah screw that, I'm with you. Just let me get my hat.

Something, something, the game's not fully released, something, profit.

Here's your hat. I'll meetcha outside.

Today I deleted Pokemon Go from my phone...

It is time that they should listen to the consumer more, because right now it seems that their guiding light has burnt out.

I just saw that, when i clicked on it (hoping there was an update that would tell me when things were near with the app closed) all I got was a message saying "unfortunately pokemon go as stopped"

poetic really...

simple fix- long press on the notification, on android. click the "i" icon then click block notifications. in 7.0 (nougat) just long press then change the setting. simple as that.

You were supposed to bring people together Pokemon Go not plunge yourself into darkness.

I don't remember the last time I launched it. Worse? I don't remember the last time my kids asked about it.

Forgot I still had the app on my phone. The push notification helped me to remember to delete it. Thanks Niantic!

I just uninstalled it after I got that notification, thanks for reminding me I still had the app Niantic!

I'm just happy to see other people using a Sony phone. They're as rare as a mewtwo where I live

Pokemon GO officially lost me today. You can no longer track pokemon while driving. You have to be completely stopped to see what's around you.

This is how you get yourself uninstalled. This is a shitty thing that only bad pay-to-win games do. There's no reason for a game to put up notifications to remind a player the game exists.

I was wondering about that

The push notifications don't work on my phone, so i just get random notifications saying "unfortunately pokemon go has stopped"

Drove through downtown last night around midnight. In the height of the game, there would be 50 or so people running around down there, which is a lot for our small town. No one last night. My son said he was thinking of quitting. I said niantic completely fucked it up. They had someone like me, whod never played any pokemon ever, playing. And bonding with my angsty teenager. And they fucked it all up.

I got a notification telling me about the features of the new update. Damn how dare they. How dare they remind me that theres been an update to the game.

Passive aggressiveness aside, I'm 90% sure you can disable any notifications you want on android.

You can disable notifications on Android by going into the app menu in settings and turning off notifications. Problem solved

I think you're missing the point, which is that Niantic are getting pretty desperate trying to dig themselves out of the hole they put themselves in.

Yeah I agree but to be fair almost every game I download has some annoying notifications for it and thus I've turned off notifications for almost every game I have on my phone

The first one worked! Continue this and not only will I not be opening up the app but I will delete it like the rest who try this tactic

For my money they have literally tried everything they possibly could think of to get you to go away and this is a last ditch effort. The only step beyond this is to push full screen adds mid battle.

It was fun at the start but they're basically digging themselves a bigger hole with every update.

I uninstalled it when it kept crashing everyday.... when i wasnt playing it.

Go into your phone setting and turn them off.

This happened to me and if it's not a one time thing then it'll be the last straw and I'll just uninstall the game. There's not much keeping me invested in the game as it is with the lack of tracking, if you bug me with push notification then that's just asking for a deletion.

Good news is I can block notifications from specific apps.

[–]will_derp_4_food 2ポイント3ポイント  (0子コメント)

I got that notification too. Opened PoGo, tried catching a few pokemans, and had 3/5 flee. Pokemon that, before, never would have fled. Mid-100 pidgey fled, but a few secs later an upper 400 venonat was caught with a regular ball that didn't register the curve I put on it.

Niantic seems to really be screwing with its playerbase. I'm one of the lucky few who have not gotten as many problems as others, but this amount of problems is started to get to the point of No Man's Sky territory. Niantic, you only have to do two things to let the playerbase continue with you (and trust me, they will if you just do these simple things)

1) KEEP TRACKING APPS. until you release your own system to actually make the game playable in terms of an exploration game rather than relying on Random spawns, let third parties keep the game playable. If you don't work or study in an area that's loaded with pokestops and gyms, the game is practically pointless to play.

2) LET EVERYONE PLAY. I don't care what your excuse is to blocking those with rooted phones or those who can't update to android 6, you're shitting on them hard. Nobody is going to bother buying new phones for an app that at its current state is just a glorified pedometer. Until YOU release what you guys are calling "the entire game", LET people play on any device they desire. You don't lose money for it, you just let the game stay popular.

TL, DR; I'm getting tired of seeing so many players leave the game in the course of a few months over Niantic being incompetent assholes.

I have gotten 2 notifications today, one saying to update the game (Even though that is really pointless because I already am on the latest version.) and one saying that catch bonus thingy. Look, Memo to Niantic, If you want to bring most of your playerbase back, Release the new tracker globally, make it so that rural players can enjoy the game too, And give us, the fans, what we want. And there are people who cannot play unless they have an APK such as the people in India. The reason why not as many people are playing your game is that you are taking features that used to work perfectly, break them, and just get rid of them altogether. Another reason is that summer is over and most people are busy with School/Work. I'm pretty sure as you fix all of these bugs and actually interact with the userbase and fix everything. People will start coming back to the game. You are making some useful features such as the whole buddy system. But a bunch of people left because they were busy, didn't have enough time, or just simply lost interest in the game. If you fix all of the bugs, and release major updates like trading and Gen 2, I can assure you that by the Summer of 2017, people are going to be playing again.

Bring back the hunt and people will play. Simple as that.

If they can send notifications to play, they can send them for nearby pokemon

I was a big defender of Niantic in the first few weeks after the game came out, but at this point it's been far too much time for them have hardly any of the features promised on launch - not to mention they're having glitches that didn't exisylt on launch!

Nintendo should be embarrassed by this partnership. Niantic absolutely did not, and most likely will not, deliver. It's sad to have to put such a fantastic idea to rest, but it's not like Nintendo is going to contract a different company to go back to the drawing board and make an acceptable product.
