Also, DS chargers being a reasonable length instead of keeping me glued to a socket.

The DS lite is still the shit. I literally played pokemon soul silver the other day for 2 hours and the thing hasn't been on the charger in years.

I picked up my SP a while back after many years. Nearly full charge.

E: I meant SP.

I found my lost Gameboy Advance in the compost heap at my parents garden and was able to rig it up as a portable generator and powered my house for like 3 months

A little known fact, the Mars Curiosity Rover is powered by a Gameboy SP.

I hear NASA controls it with the wii remote and nunchuck

This is actually a myth. In actuality, NASA uses the PowerGlove.

Yup and they use the virtual boy as a visor for the cameras on the curiousity rover.

DS Lite has an amazing battery. May have to go break out Phantom Hourglass.

Such a great game. It came bundled with my DS Lite. Such good times.

Spirit tracks on the other hand... Left something to be desired

So weird. I feel like spirit tracks is way better than phantom hourglass

Aside from the train track system which really took away the senses of exploration to me, i felt very disconnected from the other characters and areas in the game.. Good game, but probably my least favorite Zelda

That game wasn't completely on track. I felt like the series was slightly derailed with that game.

No room for puns when talking about the shitstorm that was spirit tracks. I grunted through the game just because its a Zelda game why not, to this day it is the only one I have not completed, for the sole fact, that playing the final song on that terrible flute thing with the DS mic is literally impossible. I tried it for days, nonstop. I used to have a lot more determination than I do now. Still haven't finished it.

I did it on an emulator long ago. However I had to slow the game down to a crawl to do it. That final song is balls cause the timing has to be exactly perfect.

If you mean a desire for Phantom Hourglass to be more like it, I agree!

You mean the shitty Train Sim posing as a Zelda game?

I hate that game. They fixed the part of Phantom Hourglass that mad the game suck and then added a game play mechanic that made the game worse.

Backwards compatibility too!

Those minigames on the DS Mario games were the shit. I spent plenty of recesses with my friends playing that a long time ago along with Mario Kart DS and Animal Crossing: Wild World over local multiplayer. That or drawing dicks over Pictochat.

I miss my DS Lite. :(

I don't even remember the last time I charged my DSi. It is insane...

What couldn't the DS lite do? It's still my favorite handheld Nintendo's ever made. If mine's bottom screen hadn't started glitching out so bad graphically I'd still be rocking it.

It didn't have DSiWare or any other software apart from Pictochat, etc. but it could still play GBA games and has, on lowest brightness, a 19-hour battery life.

If there was a possibility I'd offer you a game through Wifi on WFC.

Oh man.

Those things last long, are tough and durable.

Insanely good tech. like my 2006 model classic ipod which probably would have outlasted me.

You can buy even longer ones too!

I mean, if they just used USB standard you could just buy a longer cord for $5...

I'd wish they'd come with a charger in the first place.

They did. The 3ds's are the ones that dont come with a charger

plus cables being durable and not dying after one month

Now if only the game pad had that.

I once got 80 minutes!

You can push it to 90 while watching Netflix if you turn the brightness down and watch with no sound

Here's a protip: if you have a wiimote or pro controller you can press the home button on the gamepad, sync the wiimote, go to gamepad settings, turn off the gamepad screen, and simply click resume with the wiimote and boom, the gamepad screen is off while watching! This actually works with a lot of games that don't require the gamepad.

The thing is, the pad should have a button that does this...

Except some apps, like Netflix, don't let you connect a Wiimote to your console at all while they're open. I just leave the Gamepad on the charging dock whenever I'm not using it, so it at least has the full 2 hour charge when I want to play something.

You can use the gamepad while it's plugged in too. You won't have to use the bottom stand every time to charge it.

At this point, I just charge the gamepad when I play anything over an hour, because battery.

Feels like a 30 minute battery life

It's like 2-3 hours. People give the DS4 shit (and rightly so) but at least it lasts a full game session.

Nintendo sells a battery with a longer life for the gamepad that you can buy on their website. I think it comes standard with the Japanese version (I could be wrong), but either way, it's compatible with US version. You just need a small screwdriver to replace the battery.

Edit: https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/browse/productDetailColorSizePicker.jsp?productId=prod150204

Mandatory purchase.

I mean, not really. I'm doing just fine with the normal battery. From full charge it lasts about 3 hours which is longer than I ever play.

But you can accidentally forget to put in on the charger for once and it's still usable next time you play

Eh, the cord's long enough that I can plug it in and play it.

Yup, the game pad is honestly just a device you always have plugged in. The cords Nintendo provides are long enough that the battery life isn't annoying - so long as guests remember

Or, if you have a charging cradle, then you just always leave it in that.

It's the Sega Game Gear of controllers.

[–]Dintri 4

Don't insult the Game Gear!

It isn't an insult. I loved my Game Gear, but it ate batteries like a stoner in a Funions factory.

If there is one insult it deserves, it's the battery life one.

Then again, I owned a nomad. Like, 6 AA batteries and that thing only got ~ 1.5 Hours

I get a good amount of battery life on mine. 4 to 5 hours.

Yeah I get at least three hours when I'm playing smash online.

Same here. Dunno what everyone else is doing to burn through their battery life...

What are you talking about? It has a battery?

Thought you always had to have it plugged in.

Now only if my Samsung phone had that.

I, a Wii U owner, laughed at that.

Help.

At least it is chargable and you can play it while being charged. Still better than what most remotes have to offer.

what system has controllers you can't charge and use? I only have pc/xbox currently with both support that, 8 really can't imagine playstation doing that honestly, who else is there lol

Or if it didn't exist

That`s like 79 hours and 59 minutes more than the Wii U Gamepad!

Is the game pad really that awful? I always wanted one, but just couldn't do it unless they released one that played blurays

I think it's decent when fully charged. It seems to use its battEry while off which can be annoying

i call that the "calling the mothership" function, with its goddamn flashing blue circle of "its 2am buy mario kart dlc"

Its not, people are exaggerating. I get about 4 to 5 hours when i binge before I have to plug it in. But my charger is near the couch so I usually just leave it connected most of the time. Theres an upgraded battery that lasts about 8 hours for those who really need it.

Never had to stop playing because the gamepad died, never measured the time, but I can get lost for hours in Winwaker HD... But I'm old, so no more 8+ hour gaming sessions

Haha ok so it would hold up to my 1-3 hour max game sessions :p

I always play mine plugged in. The charging cable is very long.

It normally lasts me 3-4 hours, but it's also my only controller for my Wii U, so I'd personally say yeah, it's pretty bad. As another comment below said, it doesn't help that it loses battery while turned off due to staying awake for notifications (namely , eShop sales. Nothing more fun than being woken up by a bright pulsing light...).

The long charging cable really mitigates any issues, but I don't play the WiiU as much anymore so I may be mis-remembering.

Lasts about 3 hours, which is about as much time I have to play games any given day anyway.

To put it in perspective, whichever family member is using it sits on the side of the couch closest to the outlet when we play Mario 3D World.

80x more life than a PS4 controller.

Man i swear to god that remote spends 90% of its life plugged in. Why even bother making it wireless...

I think the real question is why bother with the track pad.

For the ps4 yeah, but plug it into your pc using ds4 windows its becomes useful.

Can you actually navigate with it? I felt like it wasn't accurate enough.

I have no problem navigating with it. It's almost like a laptop touchpad.

I find that the navigation is excellent but something about trying to click with the pad throws me off now and again. What i did was set up an internet browsing profile when im not gaming so the track pad works for mouse and ive macro'd r1 for mouse left and r2 for mouse right click.

Yeah, agreed. The problem is that the cursor jumps while you're pressing it in with your thumb.

I think the real question is why aren't developers making more use of this awesome piece of technology.

Sony is notorious for implementing major new features and then like, doing nothing with them.

is that really Sony's fault though? they already gave the developer something new to work on but it seems nothing groundbreaking has been developed

Well, I know Nintendo wasn't afraid to take the blame for not properly conveying to developers what the Wii U can do.

I wish they'd done two things:

1) made it clear to developers what potential the gamepad has

2) made it clear to developers that the gamepad is by no means a necessary control element and you can totally just use it for off-TV play and otherwise make normal games

You'd get the more adventurous devs putting it to use and the less adventurous devs not acting like the console will give them AIDS.

It is actually used quite a bit and surprisingly well on psvr.

I have two controllers, not that I have friends to play with it's just more convenient to keep one charging while I use the other

It's got the worst battery on any device I've ever known. You take it off the charger and play a game then watch some Netflix and it's like warning low battery.

really? i play for 10+ hours on that thing. that's leaving the led light on and everything. maybe closer to 20 hours possibly. i feel like i rarely charge it. maybe every couple days at best

I'm pretty sure even people that get a "long" charge out of their controller get like 7 hours TOPS. I feel like mine is more in the 4-6 hour range even with the dimmed light bar. Maybe you and the 1% got godly batteries but for the majority of people I think it's an abysmally short life. I LOVE the PS4 and the controller but the battery blows.

I must be in the 1% then, because I remember thinking when I first bought the system, how crazy long the battery on my controllers lasted.

I just discovered you can change its active time, so instead of being on the entire time the system is on, changed it ten minutes and it lasts days for me now.

Edit: Fuck I'm dumb, you guys probably play games on your ps4. Mine is just an expensive Netflix client, I guess that's why it lasts so long.

I have a 12 foot usb cable for this reason.

That's why I dig my Xbox One controller: Eneloop batteries last a very long time, and I always have a backup set charged and ready to go.

Built-in batteries for controllers SUCK.

I think you have a bad controller maybe. I can easily get 1.1 hours out of mine.

My Wii U gamepad, the thing with the big ass bright screen on it, has a battery life longer than my ps4 controller.

Not saying the gamepad has a great battery life (around 6 hours with that extended battery Nintendo released a while back) but I'm lucky if I get 5 hours out of my ps4 controller. That's pretty abysmal.

[–]Record_Was_Correct 15ポイント16ポイント  (48子コメント)

Lol wut? I get a solid 6-7 hours of gaming on a full charge.

Yeah I think the only people who complain about dual shock battery life are those who don't ever plug them in. I have two controllers, while I play with one, the other one charges, when I'm done playing, the one I was playing with goes on the charger.

I go to my friends apartment and they have 2 ps4s and 4 total controllers. There is ALWAYS at least one dead controller. Just perpetual laziness really

A solution that requires multiple 60 dollar controllers is a solution that sucks. It's my only complaint since switching from 360 to ps4. AAs are cheaper and better in a pinch.

[–]Record_Was_Correct 9ポイント10ポイント  (1子コメント)

Batteries ain't cheap. I only have one controller and have no issues with running out of charge on it

Seriously. Charge my ps4 controller like once every 2 days. Charge my pro controller once every couple months

That big ass light for no reason.

The LED doesn't make much of a difference, there's a test or two out there showing this.

The Wii U Pro is one of the best controllers I've ever had, I've probably used it more with my PC than I've used the Wii U itself.

This looks comfortable...

Like you wouldn't believe. Thinner and lighter than the xbox 360/one controller, similar layout, but slightly better stick configuration, and a d-pad that actually works. For its charging cable, it comes with a mini-usb cable that's like 8 feet long, and it charges in about 5-6 hours. I feel like I've charged it a total of 4 times since I got it 3 years ago.

An important mentioned but not emphasized point is built in rechargeable batter so no 20$ additional play and charge kit required.

It does, however, lack analog triggers.

Yeah, all Wii U controllers do. It's sad because Nintendo made extensive use of the analog triggers back in the GameCube days.

I use this on my computer with an adapter.
Best joystick ever.

I use it on my steam link. Best part is that it works right out of the box with no adapter needed!

What, how does that work ?

Im no expert on how exactly it works but the actual steam link processor box supports a decent amount of Bluetooth devices which is what the Wii U Pro Controller is.

how? I need this

You're welcome. Adapter can either emulate one X360 controller for games that require specifically that controller or it can handle 4 generic controllers through just the one adapter.

This is the simple solution. If you already have Bluetooth on your computer and don't mind a bit of research, search wiinusoft. You'll get a program a guy has developed to emulate an Xbox controller through bluetooth.

Thanks a lot, ordered it just now. Glad I don't need to spend another €50 on an XBox controller for PC that is inferior to the WiiU pro controller anyways.

Honest question: is there any real use for the Wii U's touch pad outside of the system? Can it be hacked or used for any other purpose?

[–]PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__ 27ポイント28ポイント  (7子コメント)

Too lazy to back up this statement but: hackers found out that the gamepad uses a pretty insecure Wi-Fi connection, meaning someone could probably reverse engineer the data transfer. Whether there's a practical application for it remains to be seen. My guess is that anything you could use it for would be better suited with a tablet.

Based on Xenoblade Chronicles X, it'd be pretty awesome to have a lot of Steam RPGs modded to use the Gamepad.

you can stream pc video to it, and also send out button inputs via an external program

Really good question, I'd like to see what people can do with them outside of their intended use.

I've done some looking, and it supposedly has very low resolution and a really crappy touchscreen...but still...for science!

720p screen with DS tier touch capabilities.

Not to mention the pad's battery life is rather low. (mine caps out at around 2 hours)

You could do more by getting a twinstick phone case and using an android phone.

The screen is only 480p (854x480) which is not great for today's standards. Original wii games look best on this screen however due to its high pixel density vs a standard LCD TV

It has a webbrowser.. Before I owned an iPad I used it to stream from Plex.

Yeah the Wii Us' web browser is pretty great. I was surprised at how well it works browsing reddit. Especially r/videos. I would use it more if I dint have a tablet dedicated specifically for lying in bed.

I first charged mine when Mario Kart 8 came out. Had to recharge it last week.

This honestly should've been the Wii U's main controller, along with the console itself having a different name.

I'm amazed at this thing's battery life, seriously. I got it last Christmas and, though I don't play all that often and just use it for Smash when I do, I can count on one hand the times I can recall having to charge it.

Nintendo has always been pretty awesome with their batteries. Anything they make that uses AAs just devours them, though.

And the most comfortable stick layout ever.

I agree, it's very close to being perfect!

Still doesnt beat the xbox controller. So comfy

You've just got a decade of bias. The sticks are in a more natural position on the WiiU Pro Pad

It's only natural if you're using both sticks at the same time, which is unusual when playing Nintendo games (most of their games ask you to use the left control stick and the face buttons). For this configuration, The X1 controller is better.

Side note, if you get a chance to use an Xbox Elite controller do it! It's even better feeling than the already awesome feeling regular Xbox One controller.

Xbox Elite with those convex sticks are awesome.

As someone who barely uses controllers, the XBox one is my favourite (yet), good size for me, good layout.

The sticks might habe a Vetter layout with the Wii U controller, but you don't really use the right stick anyway in most games, so having my thumb in the buttons is the better positioning.

Not Op, but I dislike the wii u stick layout because in my opinion, the buttons is far more important than the stick and my hand just automatically goes for the stick with the existing layout.

Yeah, probably because it never gets used!

Too bad the game pad doesn't last anywhere near as long.

These controllers friggin rock. I can barely get five out of PS4

I love Nintendo hardware. They always have durable systems. My Gameboy and DS/3DS have been through hell and have not had any issues yet. Might I add, I love the stylus position on the 3DS

Nintendo can make a better Xbox controller than Microsoft can.

To be fair, it looks like they copied Xbox's design and made some minor tweaks

Everyone copied snes and added sticks before that even.

Bingo! I remain loyal to Nintendo partly because modern gaming exists thanks to it.

Other gaming companies are simply racing on the road Nintendo paved.

Both Microsoft and Nintendo have been using that sort of design since 2001. Arguably, Nintendo did it better at first. If Nintendo didn't try something new with the Wii, the controller design would have come about much sooner.

I just wish the right stick was swapped with the face buttons so I could play claw style when I want.

They put Nintendo 3DS batteries in them because they had a surplus. Good decision.

Nintendo somehow really understands batteries. I have a Nintendo DS I haven't playing in three years that still has 50% battery life

80x longer than the Wiimote.

I've had a wireless GameCube controller since 2004, and to this day, I still haven't had to switch the batteries. I miss the good old days of stuff that would run on the same pair of batteries longer than your life.

My Steam controller also has fantastic battery life. I keep waiting for it to die, extra batteries ready...and it keeps going.. if only my phone were like that!

Just making up for the abysmal battery of the Wii U controller.

I always find it such bullshit that electronic companies can promote such long battery life on their products, but it's assuming you aren't going to use it. Like iphones, you Can get 24 hours of battery life out of it, but it has to be on airplane mode and you cant use any features in order for it to actually last that long. It's stupid.

Also, one of the best designed controllers, taking the best from the DualShock 4 and Xbone controllers

Better than the PS4 controllers 80 minute life.

Sells 3ds consoles. No charger included.

good guy nintendo release a good non gimmicky controller, sells it separately

As far as I know it has infinite battery life because I still haven't put 80 total hours on my first charge.

So what your saying is we should praise companies now because they sell what they advertise? That should be considered normal.

It's also the most comfortable controller compared to the X1, and PS4.

they are still making up for the N64 controller, which sucked royally

In hindsight it sucked balls, but it did introduce the analog stick. It came out a good bit before PlayStations dual analog controller.

I feel like it has more. When I was playing Xenoblade X, I had over 80 hours of gameplay done, and it had still 2 bars left when I checked.

Doesn't explode either.
