For someone who has experienced the glitz and glamour of Hollywood in his role as ‘Pretty’ Ricky Conlan in Rocky spin-off Creed, Bellew’s win over Ilunga Makabu in May was entirely fitting of a movie script. Making a third attempt at winning a world title after previous defeats to Nathan Cleverly and Adonis Stevenson at light-heavyweight, the 33-year-old, who moved up a division after that latter loss in Quebec, dominated the opening exchanges yet quickly found himself in trouble after being caught flush by a powerful left hand from the dangerous, big-hitting southpaw.

Despite suffering a broken nose during that exchange, the endlessly determined Bellew was simply not to be denied and he broke down in tears after finally realising his dream with a flurry of heavy third-round shots that left an overwhelmed Makabu first slumped against the ropes and then motionless on the canvas. The fact that such an achievement, after so many years of waiting, came in front of an adoring hometown crowd on sacred ground at Everton’s Goodison Park made it all the sweeter.

Tony Bellew will make the first defence of his world title this weekend when he takes on American BJ Flores. The Liverpool-born fighter became WBC champion earlier this year when he stopped Ilunga Makabu in the third round of their bout at Goodison Park.He is the strong favourite to retain his title but can’t afford to underestimate the experienced Flores, who has won eight of his last nine fights

Bellew (27-2-1, 17 KOs)—who climbed off the canvas to knock out Ilunga Makabu in May and pick up the vacant belt—has the advantage of the fight taking place in his hometown at the Echo Arena.

Challenger Flores (32-2-1, 20 KOs) failed in his bid to claim the interim WBA title from Beibut Shumenov last year. The American—who also works on the other side of the ropes as an analyst for NBC Sports—also has a loss to Danny Green on his record.

As well as the main event, Bleacher Report will provide updates on the intriguing lightweight clash between Luke Campbell and Derry Mathews.

Campbell (14-1, 11 KOs) defends his WBC Silver strap in what is expected to be his toughest test in the paid ranks to date, particularly as Liverpudlian Mathews (38-10-2, 20 KOs) is fighting in his own back yard.
