I cringe when I see the "look what I bought, me so liberated!" MGTOW posts. I believe these men are trading one unhealthy habit for another. Switching from seeking female validation to societal validation, which is really the same thing. But, to each their own. I feel that men will be much happier leading simple lives of self-improvement. Toys are cool, and I own a few (dirtbikes, etc), but they're more utilitarian than anything else.

I had the money to buy a new car last year. It took a lot not to go for the flashiest, "coolest" car I could afford and instead find the one that I would have the most fun driving around where I live (single lane country roads, tight bends etc) What helped in the end was realising the guy who owns the coolest car locally is a complete moron

You'd be surprised how little stuff a guy actually needs to get by. It boils down to a studio / 1BR apartment with a kitchen and a place to put a computer. Television is pretty useless these days especially with the internet.

Beyond that some clothes and an iPhone and your good to go.

agreed, now i associate every purchase with the pain and effort of having to sell it or move it when moving homes

edit: what triggered my realization for this post was this: tour my minimalist apartment

If, as many guys do, you have a compulsion to collect, have a look at eBay and what things sell for. What I started doing years ago was building a collection of retro games. This past year I've sold them to downsize - all the ones I still play I now have on emulation - and all in, the money I sank into the collection has been returned tenfold. I'm now building a collection of VHS tapes as they are basically free or very cheap. I'm choosing just the coolest covers or films that look awesome that I've never heard of before, if I amass 1000 tapes and half of them end up being worth 5 and a handful a bit more then when I come to sell it will be like having had a second job, I got a shade over 20k all in for my retro collection
