The final stages of any project where you're giving 300% for days at a time to meet a deadline. Happens with other production positions, in my case (architecture) there is typically a week long crunch before the deadline of a project where everybody is in the office for 12 hours a day busting ass to finish the package to deliver to a client

But it's the way of capitalism. No regard for the employee's well being, the only assets are the deliverables, not the crew and talent working on them. Not applying this dierectly to HG, but to the system as a whole. So broken, so unhealthy.

You are not obliged to do it. Just go home at night and don't come on weekends. They won't fire you they need you anyway because you wrote most of the code. It's a bad practice but it's also a "culture" thing that Devs expect from their pairs. Just don't do it.

It's the crunch. I still don't know if he had malicious intent with his lies. Maybe a lot of that stuff was in the game and had to be pulled out because there was too many problems with it. Maybe not, I guess we will never know since they'll never talk.

He even wore the same shirt in those last 2 interviews, maybe the guy hadn't even left the studio between them or showered at all.

If they had to be pulled he should've come out and say so. Instead he lied until after release when 2 people met couldn't see each other and he dodged the question amazingly, blowing everyone's head.

This is the thing I don't get. I assume most people haven't put any effort into a creative project like this one, or tried to make something you really care about. I think chalking this one up as a "scam" just to make a few bucks is pretty unfair. It just seems like something went way the fuck wrong in development, maybe even late in development and they had to release.

I think about those episodes from the most recent season of Silicon Valley where they're basically out of money for development and have to release something to earn any operating capital.

Exactly. A smart dude like Sean could probably come up with a million easier, less time consuming, and more successful ways to scam people out of their money. Video games are the last industry you want to get into if all you care about is making a quick buck (well, maybe not mobile games).

I get that's how things look from your more sympathetic point of view, but when those changes are all pulled from the game BETWEEN marketing and release, consumers have every right to feel lied to, and since the game is non refundable for a lot of people, and not what they thought they were getting, then it begins to feel like theft.

No, HG probably didn't come up with a fucking convoluted evil plan to lie and steal, but yes, consumers have more than enough reason to feel robbed and lied to, thanks to really shifty communication and marketing.

The lack of refunds is an issue with the vendor you bought the game from, not Hello Games. Sean Murray didn't decide to make digital downloads non-refundable.

In that, you missed the entire point of my comment. NO, Sean Murray probably didn't lie and steal from customers. YES, customers feel lied to and stolen from. Im saying the reaction on this subreddit is justified, as they have still felt the punishment. Directing it at Sean and HG is purely because of the absurd silence, im sure on a personal level the dont deserve it, and I dont really condone the weird attacks on their characters, but people were lied to and (despite technical terms of digital games) sold a product that wasnt advertised.

I really don't think he was malicious. You can tell from these pics that he looks like a guy who was super stressed out over creating this game. They also managed to create a pretty cool product before release if you look at all those videos from 2014 and earlier. He probably legitimately thought the game would be what he was creating and then realized during creation that it would be nothing like the tech demos come release. But by then Sony was involved and probably told him to keep quiet and it isn't like you can ignore the biggest name in the industry right now and just start telling people not to buy your game. He still needed a day to day job and he would gain nothing from coming clean except losing the entire studio. Yeah it was only made by a 15-man team but those are 15 people that would potentially lose their jobs if Sean had communicated with the community. It isn't the norm for indie studios like this to not talk but these guys have the pressure from Sony.

Nope. Sadly, I had a few friends (past tense) who wound up addicted to meth, and they ended up looking just like the "Faces of Meth" pictures. These four of Sean are nothing like that.

While that last one is likely due to being in crunch mode, those "raccoon eyes" remind me of a couple of heroin users, that were classmates in college.
