Militia members arrested in alleged mosque attack plot

Last Updated Oct 14, 2016 4:12 PM EDT

Three right-wing militia members have been arrested for allegedly planning attacks at a mosque and a housing complex in Kansas, CBS News has learned.

The attack would have specifically targeted Somali refugees, a source told CBS News.

In a statement, the acting U.S. attorney for Kansas said charges would be announced at a press conference later Friday against three people “in a case involving a major investigation.”

The statement didn’t provide additional details on the investigation.

CBS Wichita affiliate KWCH-TV reports that on Tuesday the FBI assisted the police department in Liberal, Kansas, with an incident involving multiple road closures. Liberal is about 215 miles southwest of Wichita.

It’s unclear whether the incident is connected to the arrests.
